I really like mine it’s a Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Lithium Ion Cordless Pet Hand Vacuum. I like it so much I bought my mom one for when I visit with my dog. Dog sleeps on my bed and I needed something easy I could use to vacuum my bed and this is very light! I also use it to vacuum my carpeted stairs. One thing to note, a lot of people complain about the battery. It’s never bothered me but I also don’t run it very long. I was able to vacuum my stairs with one charge and I normally keep on the charger anyways so it’s not a big deal for me but just something to keep in mind. Answer from ice_queen2 on reddit.com

Hey there, I need recommendations for a good handheld vacuum or regular that you can take off the handle. We have carpeted stairs and we got 2 pets. We have the Bissell SurfaceSense Allergen Lift-Off Pet Vacuum, a Roomba and the Shark handheld. Thank you!

I own a small commercial and residential cleaning company, and the business is picking up. The bane of my existence is definitely vacuuming the stairs. I have a Riccar Vibrance R20E, a fleet of Panasonic Power waves (RIP Panasonic vacuums 😟), and a random Bissell. The brushes on all of them are far wider than a stair tread if placed on it sideways and are heavy to lug up and down and try and support with one hand and move back and forth with the other. Little to no stair work on the commercial side, it's pretty much all on the residential side. I've been contemplating some type of a cordless stick vacuum that is dedicated for stairs. I have some experience with them and I do not consider stick vacuums to be heavy duty, and nothing will last as long long or be as powerful as my other vacuums. But I'm so tired of trying to make it work with those vacuums on stairs. I've worked with a Miele canister vacuum before and those are fine, but I want to stay away from canisters. Price range $300 or less. Thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Oh yeah upright vacuums are the worst for carpeted stairs. If you want a cordless vacuum I really like the LG CordZero Kompressor. The powerhead is a hair over 9.75 inches which is narrower than the standard stair depth. LG CordZero Kompressor Pros: separate washable filter and hepa exhaust filter, removable and replaceable batteries, many models come with 2 batteries and 2 powerheads, Kompressor lever compacts dirt to fit more in the bin but it's more useful for getting stuff off the shroud when you are emptying it, charger can stand up, be wall mounted, or sit on a flat surface so you could recharge batteries in your car. Cons: vacuum doesn't deep clean carpets (but most cordless stick vacuums don't) it should still surface clean enough, charger only charges 1 battery at a time but holds 2. Note: I do not recommend dual brushroll powerheads as they power both brushrolls from the same motor they seem to have more problems. A dual brushroll would also make the powerhead longer and less useful on stairs. Alternatives: Samsung Jet 90, Henry Quick. My solution for the carpeted stairs at my parents' house was a Oreck Compact Canister. You attach the upholstery brush to the end of the extension wand so you don't have to bend down. While I like that Oreck has some almost hepa bags I don't like how short the stretch hose is. The filtration isn't as good as the Oreck but I like the hose better on a Hoover Commercial Porta Power . The PortaPower is a little bigger than the Oreck canister, there are optional paper bags and it comes with a small dump out synthetic bag.

Budget - $200

Areas - This is specifically for dog hair removal. 90% of the area is carpet, stairs, edges of the room, hard to reach places. Bonus - being able to clean dog hair in my car.

I am looking for a handheld vacuum recommendation that has a lot of strength for cleaning up dog hair on carpet (on stairs, along the edges, etc). I would like a corded one as they would normally imply a stronger vacuum. It's very tiring carrying my full size vacuum around to use an attachment to clean stairs, edges, etc. I have bought a couple handheld cordless vacuums in the passed and they have all been pretty mediocre, hoping I can break that cycle! Thanks in advance.

The current one I am considering is the Shark CH950UKT.

I had a shark break a few years back. The local vacuum repair shop I took it to told me they can almost never fix sharks because they apparently don't make or sell spare parts. This may have changed but that is my experience with Shark.

As far as little handheld vacuum cleaners go, there is nothing amazing on the market, but there are some decent ones like the one for which you are looking. For ones on the market today, the one that you mentioned would do the job fine. Sure, Shark does not have great parts availability or service, but it would just be for getting little jobs here and there. If it breaks, I would assume it is not that huge of a deal. As far as suction and airflow numbers go for that Shark, it is a fairly impressive little thing. The build quality is nothing special, but not worse than any other little Chinese thing. Just make sure you keep the filters clean! Hoover also makes a handheld vacuum cleaner that I like called the ONEPWR Blade MAX "AutoVac" , although there is nothing stating that it cannot be used in a house. It does a lot of the same things as the Shark models, just with a hose that I like a lot and a better battery setup with two batteries. Also, it is more powerful by quite a bit. I would say that the main thing the Shark has over the Hoover is that the Hoover is more bulky, but the Hoover also is able to have a bigger bin with a more effective cyclone setup in it. Like the Shark, the quality is nothing spectacular, but it functions in its designed purpose.

Budget: under $100

Flooring: Carpeted stairs only

Additional needs: multiple shedding dogs that like to lay on the carpeted stairs.

Recently moved into this house, old house was 100% tile/laminate and had my Miele which i loved there. new house currently has 50%ish carpet and looking to handle this until we transition.

I currently have a Miele classic C1 for the laminate/tile floors, and just picked up one of the recommended used Oreck XL21 for carpeted rooms (until we buy new floors and go with laminate) because i wasn't too happy with the miele on carpet.

The Miele does stairs OK, and the oreck doesn't have attachments.

Just looking for a cheaper (sub $100) smaller recommendation for just carpeted stairs that will do better than what i have.

Thank you!

Exactly as the title states. Our apartment has a very long staircases, and it is a hassle to lug the vacuum up and down it with a cord that barely reaches the other side you started from by the end.

So I am looking for the vacuum you all would recommend for a handheld/cordless vacuum for stairs, and will get all the dog hair I am tired of seeing. We will continue using our current vacuum for the carpet, so just want something aimed more for the stairs/couches/dog bed.

For price range, I am okay with spending more if there is good reason to, but if the cheaper product is basically as good then it doesn’t make sense to spend more. Hopefully that makes sense.

Edit: Forgot to mention they are carpeted stairs if it matters. Then just in case the mods think my price range isn’t up to snuff, I would say no more than $250, but would prefer to keep it under $150.

Thanks!

r/VacuumCleaners on Reddit: I'm tired of dragging my corded normal vacuum up stairs to vacuum them. I want a cordless one. Recommendations?
June 5, 2021 -

The whole vacuum conversation stresses me out, because:

  1. There are hundreds of brands, some expensive brands you probably overpay for the name like cars.

  2. Each brand has tons of different models.

  3. Each model has different years available

  4. You can buy refurbished, and I'm not sure if that's smart

  5. There are tons of sales, I use slickdeals and often see refurbished cordless vacs on there for what seem like low prices but it seems impossible to compare lol.

So here's my situation. No pets, no kids (yet but hope to have some soon). I just don't like vacuuming stairs with my heavy corded Shark vac. This is mostly to get stairs easily. I have a good sized house, so I think good battery life is needed. I would like a high quality vacuum that can get hair on carpets (human hair) and cleans well, looks good, etc. Here are my three main questions:

  1. Sometimes on SlickDeals (the website) I'll see refurbished vacuums for like $100, cordless vacs. Is any cordless vacuum under $150 going to be trash? I want to get something quality.

  2. If I was willing to spend say $250 give or take to achieve my goals mentioned above, what model would you recommend?

  3. If I upped my budget to say $350 (maybe black friday?) give or take, do you think the return on that extra money actually gets you a much better product? I'm wondering when diminishing returns kicks in.

Thank you!

Quick Steps for Vacuuming Stairs via @ConsumerReports
June 2, 2023 - “In hand-vac mode, the vacuum may not be quite as light as a dedicated handheld, but it’s helpful in hard-to-reach areas.” · Frank Rizzi, another project leader, points to uprights made by Shark that have a “lift-away” feature that makes it possible to separate the collection tank from the powerhead, so it operates much like a canister. These are particularly good for carpeted stairs, where you may need more suction to remove the debris.

February 4, 2025 - Handheld vacuums are very useful, because their small size and low weight means they're easy to store, they're less tiring to use than normal vacuums, and they're handy for cleaning in fiddly little spaces such as under furniture, on the top of cupboards, around tight corners, and up the stairs.
