I want to surprise my boyfriend with a new headset. I don't have a ton of money, but I'd like to get him a really nice, highly recommended headset. He uses it for game audio and chatting with friends. Sometimes he can get loud, so something that allows him to still hear his surroundings (?) would be great, but also still have great audio and mic capacity.

I know nothing about technology, I don't even know what headset he uses right now... So please give me the full name/model of the headset you recommended and what you like about it.

Thanks :)

Edit: thank you all for the recommendations. I have a lot to look over. His current headset says G Pro (I don't see any numbers), and I'd say my budget is $200 or less.

r/WFH on Reddit: Best headset for working from home, gaming , music and general headphone use
October 13, 2024 -

I'm making a post for this because I did a lot of research and didn't really find a whole lot on this topic, particularly with the gaming aspect.

I like to buy quality products that I can get a large amount of utility out of. I don't like buying a lot of different stuff for similar tasks. I'm also a big proponent of buying high quality products so you don't have to repeat buying things every year or so, but I'm also a bargain hunter.

I like to listen to music, I game casually, I travel occasionally and I work from home 10 hours a day, 4 days a week and have a headset on most of the day. I went out and did a bunch of research and I settled on the Steel Series Arctis Nova Pro Wireless headset.

It is a pretty freaking expensive headset at about $350, but I found a set on eBay new without a box for $180. My credit card had some promo and I was able to get another $30 off too. Total delivered to my door was about $160, which is only about $50 more than my last gaming headset (that still works) I bought 3 years ago.

Here are the main bullet points of why I bought it:

  • Can connect to 3 devices at once.

    • 2 via USB and 1 Blutetooth.

      • USB devices connect to a bluetooth transmitter, which broadcasts to the headset.

    • 1 USB connection and 1 Bluetooth connection can be streamed SIMULTANEOUSLY (yes, it works and its great). I have them connected to my phone all the time while I'm working or gaming.

    • Transitioning between 1 USB device and the other is pretty easy and can be done via the headset itself or on the desktop transmitter (which is also pretty neat).

  • It has easy to use software to adjust equalizer settings

    • Con is those settings only work with the device you have the software on.

    • The transmitter device has an equalizer as well with a ton of presets for different games and can customize settings. I haven't played with this too much yet.

  • Retractable Microphone

    • The mic is actually pretty neat and a major reason why I made this purchase. It is stored in the left ear can and you can easily push it in or pull it out. It is flexible. Great for when you want to just use these as headphones and don't want to have a mic sticking out.

    • Con is the mic is directional and doesn't work super great when its pushed all the way in. Not the end of the world, but would be better if the mic was better when retracted.

    • It also has an LED light on the mic to remind you if you have the mic muted. The light brightness is also adjustable.

    • My coworkers have also said the quality of my mic has significantly improved.

  • Hot swapable batteries

    • It comes with 2 batteries. The desktop transmitter has a slot for charging one at a time, which is pretty cool.

    • The headset also has a USB C charging port under the cover on the right ear can if you're traveling with them and don't have the desktop transmitter.

  • Active Noise Cancelling and Transparent Sound

    • My ears are still getting used to this, but the ANC is good and there is a transparent sound feature as well. You can turn the ANC on or off either on the headset or on the transmitter.

    • There are also a couple microphones on the ear cans which transmit sound from your surroundings into your headset. You can turn this feature on or off and even adjust the volume. Great if you have kids and need to keep an ear out, but stay in your working world at the same time.

Those are the hilights. The most disappointing thing with these so far is the sound quality, but it isn't the worst sound quality.

The sound quality isn't even close audiophile quality. I tested a Sennehiser Momentum 4 Wireless (which holy fuck they sound amazing) headset which have infinitely better sound quality, but that shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. The Arctis Nova Pros have fine audio quality, but could definitely be better. Hopefully the next gen will be better at this price point.

I looked into Epos Gaming Headsets since they used to be apart of the Sennehiser family, but the fixed microphone turned me away. The Senneheiser M4W I tried were great, but switching between devices was not ideal and I couldn't game with them (realistically).

I also looked into the Bose QC35 II Gaming Headset, but opted to not try it because the mic for gaming is wired. Also, reviews stated mic sound quality for calls on Teams/Zoom/ other WFH apps was poor. Switching between devices was also a reason.

The SteelSeries Arctric Nova Pro Wireless headset is comfortable. I've worn them for 12 hours straight. I'm still using the original earpads, which are a faux leather and can make my skin a little sticky/sweaty, but it isn't the end of the world. I'm going to get different ones soon.

SteelSeries Arctric Nova Pro Wireless Con List:

  • Subpar sound quality for the price point

    • The bass is pretty disappointing, even after adjusting the levels on the equalizer software.

  • Directional microphone/no omnidirectional microphone to use while microphone is retracted for phone calls while on the go (not in the house). Not a huge con, but a con.

  • No hard case

    • Only came with a soft bag made of sports jersey material

  • Setup was mostly easy, but ran into issues that were not covered on the support page and had to do more digging.

    • Turns out if you have the desktop transmitter plugged into a less powerful USB port on a device, you can still be connected, but no audio will be transmitted. The fix is to plug it into a different USB. I haven't had an issue since.

Overall I'd rate the SteelSeries Arctric Nova Pro Wireless headest an 8/10 for an all around use headset.

I know these are actually made for gaming and there is no device that can actually do everything, but these are pretty damn close.

If they can improve sound quality and add an omnidirectional microphone so I don't have to have a mic boom in my face all the time, these would be a homerun.

The one problem with conventional Bluetooth headsets is around telephony. If your softphone starts automatically on boot, it doesn't find the Bluetooth headset first time out as it's not connected. That's why (for example) Jabra & Plantronics come with their own dongles...still Bluetooth, yes, but it emulates a complete headset for the sake of softphones right from the get-go. Now...this isn't a big deal if you can troubleshoot that, but working in call center support I can tell you that way too many people can't figure that out. When your manager is freaking out because you're not in queue, screwing with your headset & restarting software isn't super sustainable. I handle this by separating the functions. For work I have a good $170 Poly Voyager Focus 2 headset, and for home listening & gaming I've currently got a Bose QuietComfort Ultra. Sony XM5s are great too, but way fragile. The Poly has superb noise cancelling, intuitive controls, terrific microphones, and a few days' battery life.

Sony xm5. It is universally accepted for sounding great. For work, music and phone calls, you can use Bluetooth. A bonus is that it has multipoint connection so the headphones are connected to my phone and my laptop. For gaming, I have an Xbox so I use a wired connection. If we are talking wired headsets, I have used the Razer black shark v2x and the epos H6pro. Both sound great for calls, gaming and music. And they have good mics. Some days I use my Microsoft Xbox wireless headset for everything as well. With an EQ, it sounds pretty good too.

This is part of my project to tinker with Reddit data and LLMs. Wanted to create something useful for the community while levelling up my coding chops.

The idea is to highlight which gaming headsets got the most love specifically in the context of first person shooters. To be clear, most love =/= best. But hopefully it’s a useful data point nonetheless, especially for those overwhelmed by the options.

Any surprising rankings?

If you want to dig into the raw data, you can do so on the project page (google “RedditRecs”).

You can explore the original comments, filter by price, wireless vs wired, subreddits, comments about durability etc. Disclaimer - the page has some affiliate links. You don’t have to use them. They help fund the analyses though.

r/headphones on Reddit: I analyzed the most recommended gaming headsets across 700+ threads
November 17, 2025 -

I scraped different reddit threads where people were asking for the best gaming headsets across different communities. Then I ran a sentiment analysis through a software to see which headsets got positive reviews consistently and which ones got mixed reactions and which got negative reviews.

Right now this is still very much a work in progress so I’m looking for some feedback on which ones I should be looking for in my analysis.

My goal isn’t just to find what’s most mentioned but what reddit actually trusts because reddit is what most of us turn to for authentic recommendations.

You can see the threads and comments that I scraped on my website which is called Reddit Vetted. Detailed breakdowns for all these headsets (like in the pic) are also up on the site in case you want to get into this further. Again, I’m planning to add more models.

Here is a list of the headsets I’ve analyzed so far (still adding more to this list based on feedback):

  1. AOC Gaming Headset

  2. HyperX CloudX

  3. HyperX Cloud III Headset

  4. SteelSeries Arctis Nova 3

  5. SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro

  6. SteelSeries Arctis Nova 5

  7. SteelSeries Arctis Nova 1

  8. Corsair Void

  9. Alienware AW520H

  10. Logitech G Pro X2

  11. Turtle Beach Recon 200

  12. Turtle Beach Stealth 600

  13. Razer BlackShark V2 X

  14. Turtle Beach Recon 70

  15. Turtle Beach Recon 50X

  16. Razer Kraken Gaming Headset

  17. Ozeino Gaming Headset

My whole method:

– Scraped Reddit threads from different “best gaming headsets” threads.

– Cleaned and filtered comments to capture real product mentions.

– Pulled out product names, analyzed sentiment and context (some more complicated stuff here)

– Scored each item based on how often it’s mentioned and how positive those mentions are (reviews are broken down into 3 categories: positive, negative and neutral)

– Combined duplicate models and brand variants so the rankings weren’t skewed by repetition (more complicated stuff)

– Added a clean category search and visual summaries (like in the pic).

I am really interested in your feedback. Any headsets you feel are missing from the list entirely? Mention here and I’ll find more threads to analyze them next because this is an ongoing project that I actually learned a lot from. I want to keep working on it till I perfect my analysis, and build something that will actually help everyone in the future. I would love more input on how I can improve.

Checked pretty much everything there is on the internet, but most posts are too old now. What I need the most is it to be wireless and preferably have Game/Chat mix. I’m planning to use in only for my PC (for PS5 I have been using Astro A50 gen 4 for 5 years, they are still fine, but I want something new and better + I’m tired to take them from my PC to PS5 every time, so I need one dedicated headset only for my PC).

So, out of all headsets here are my picks:

  • Logitech G Pro X 2 (not sure about the sound, tried them, Cloud 3s sounds better IMO)

  • Hyper X Cloud 3s (no game/chat mix and 3,5mm unfortunately)

  • Astor A50X (there is no A50 gen 5 in my country and + I don’t want to have 2 almost the same headsets LOL)

  • Razer BlackShark v3 pro (not a fan of Razer overall, but noise canceling sounds amazing)

  • Arctis Nova Pro Wireless (heard that it has connection and cracking sound, same as I have on Arctis 7 back in a day)

I also had Audeze Maxwell and sold them, unbearably HEAVY, but sounded the best out of all BY FAR.

If you have any other recommendations, please, feel free to share.

For now I like Cloud 3s the most, probably. But lack of Game/Chat mix and 3,5 jack is what holds me back.

I also have HD6xx and I love them, but I hate wires when playing.

Okay so I have had my hyper x cloud 2 for about 6 years now and it’s time for an upgrade. What would be the next best? Preferably would like something with sound quality that’s about as good. I’d prefer if they had a white option for color as it matches my set up. I was thinking hyper x cloud 3 s but have heard very mixed reviews on the quality of sound.

Cloud 3s are kind of a downgrade. A lot of people say they don't feel or sound as good as the cloud 2. I'd say go with another pair of Cloud 2s honestly. Unless you're wanting to venture into something new. Here's my advice on the current lineup of headphones from major companies Blackshark v2 Pro. Great headset, however, the build design has several flaws. Figure they will last you a year or 2 at most before something breaks on it physically. Just sucks that the sound quality is great, but the actual materials and how they're built are bad Logitech GPW Wireless. Great headset, a little heavy compared to the competition but still comfortable. Sound quality is a little less than the Blacksharks V2 pros, but still great. Personally, I recommend this pair if you can find them for $150. Corsair....just don't bother. The software is atrotious and the sound quality is meh at best. Audeze Maxwell. The best of the best in wireless gaming headsets. You're getting superior sound quality. They're decently comfortable, but my god they're expensive. Think the cheapest I've seen them is $350. Steelseries Nova series. Personally, I've only used the Nova Pros which are $300. Great headset, however, not for big heads. I would not recommend for 1 reason though, the software can act up sometimes, but not as bad as Razer Synapse. I've never used the Cloud series headphones, but I've only heard good things about the Cloud 2, and that the Cloud 3 aren't as good.

I would just get the same headset if possible, if that’s what you’re satisfied with. 95% of gaming headsets just have “okay” sound. Couple of notable outliers here and there. Pc38x comes to mind with its open back design and wide soundstage. Maybe an amp/dac could help with a wired headsets audio quality a bit. Some actually come with one already. If you really cared about audio quality, you’d have to go down the audiophile route and use a dedicated headphone with a separated mic. Same is true if you wanted the “best” mic quality. I had that audiophile setup, but downgraded back to a wireless headset because I prefer the convenience over quality. It’s also a Hyper X Flight S I’ve been using for the past 5 years that somehow hasn’t died on me. Rtings.com is a good source for reviews

My trusty gaming headset just gave out after years of intense sessions, and I’m in the market for a new one. I don’t need pro-level esports gear just something reliable, comfortable, and with great audio and a good mic. Bonus points for wireless connectivity, long battery life, and solid noise isolation.

This post was pretty helpful.
https://www.reddit.com/user/Icy_Lynx1532/comments/1pooxt9/the_best_gaming_headsets_right_now_top_reddit/

Let’s say under $200, but I’m flexible if something is truly worth the extra cost.

I mostly play FPS, RPGs, and multiplayer games, so sound clarity, comfort, and mic quality matter most to me.

After some research, I’ve narrowed it down to a few popular options:

  • SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro Wireless

  • HyperX Cloud III Wireless

  • Razer BlackShark V2 Pro (2023)

  • Logitech G Pro X 2 Lightspeed

r/HeadphoneAdvice on Reddit: Best Headphones for Gaming/Music (no mic)
December 30, 2024 -

As the title implies I am looking for headphones that would be both great for music and games like FPS shooters where audio cues are important.

I’d like to upgrade from the typical gaming marketed headsets. It seems the audio quality is not typically worth the price, and I am in belief that a standalone microphone paired with a wired micless headset would be much better in terms of overall quality. My price range is up to $400. One suggestion I’ve heard frequently is the beyerdynamic DT 770s. I love the look and comfortability of these. Any suggestions?

UPDATE: I ended up buying the beyerdynamic DT1770 pro MKIIs and they have been everything I was hoping for. I won't say blown away because these were quite expensive compared to a lot of alternatives which I imagine would do just as great.

To start they are extremely comfortable and sit perfectly on my slightly above average sized head. I love the appearance and build quality of these.

Music: These absolutely blew me away coming from my old $100 Steeleseries Arctis 1 gaming headset. The quality is just on a completely different level, and I am rediscovering love for old songs just by listening to them on these. After a bit of EQ tweaking, the bass is great, and not overwhelming. Everything sounds so clear and separated, but also smooth. Don't want to go too in depth on it because I am no audiophile.

Gaming: Exactly what I was hoping for in these headphones. The sounds in a first person shooter are all very distinct, and I feel that I can very clearly know what is happening around me.

Overall I am very pleased and this is exactly what I needed for a gaming/music combo. I imagine the $200/$400 cheaper version of this headphone would give you a very similar experience, and I likely overspent. However for my needs these ticked every single box. Hope this helps someone find what they are looking for.

by far the best ones for gaming would be Sennheiser HD 490 Pro, that said all around I prefer Audio-Technica ATH-R70x or R70x Refine if you are in US as it's $50 less from closed backs $699 msrp Denon AH-D5200 you can get for ~380 shipped from Japan on eBay brand new, it's a step above DT 700 Pro X, DT 770 X and AKG K553 MKII which are all better than regular old 770s

Fellow gamer discovering audio here, first questions first: Are you looking for closed headphones (passive noise isolation) or open headphones (you can hear your surroundings and they can sightly hear what you're listening to)? Closed headphones: look into the Fiio FT1. They're currently very well praised and hit above their price point. Haven't tried them personally as I prefer open, but they're easy to look up as they're the most recommended closed headphones of the year. Open headphones I've tried and would recommend: R70x, AR5000, Ananda. All well praised with different sound profiles, so your preference matters. They're all very detailed and have good imaging for directional accuracy. Do you lean towards bass? ATH R70x is warm neutral and its "R70x Refine" variant had a limited run in North America that offered better bass. Incredibly comfortable and smooth, you could also get the classic R70x and switch pads down the line to imitate their Refine variant. Another headphone I haven't tried but have seen recommended with emphasis on bass are the Hifiman Edition XS. Do you prefer really clean mids? The Aune AR5000 were so CLEAN upon my first listening. I'm unsure how else to describe them aside clean, clear and so satisfying. Currently testing them out for both music and gaming. Maybe vocals are what makes it come alive for you? Hifiman Ananda really wow'ed me with how crystal clear vocals sounded. I had never heard vocals that way before. Some concerns over the Hifiman quality control, however. Also uncomfortable for smaller heads, but great for larger heads. The little Sennheiser 560s deserve a mention and were my entry level gateway drug, but I think you can skip them with your budget on hand. All of the ones I've mentioned are worth your few minutes watching some YouTube reviews or reading up on them. You'll see how well received they are and they're all great for competitive gaming and music. You'll just have to start somewhere and see if it fits your sound preference. Just like the first character you pick on a new FPS title. Lastly, in case you ask, the Fiio FT1 "Pro" just came out but haven't tried them, an unfortunately side effect of not being made of money. Hope this helped!
