Healthcare Marketplace Options - Are there ANY good ones? - Texas
Depending on where you are in Texas you have a wide variety of insurance carriers to choose from including: Aetna CVS Health; Celtic/Ambetter (Ambetter from Superior Health Plan); Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas; CHRISTUS; Friday Health Plan; Moda Health Plan; Molina; Oscar; Sendero; SHA/FirstCare; Community Health Choice; Scott & White Health Plan; UnitedHealthcare of Texas; Cigna; Ascension Personalized Care Some of these carriers have a national footprint like Cigna, Aetna, and United Healthcare, Molina, and Oscar. Others are local plans like BCBS of Texas, Scott & White Health Plan, Ascension, Sendero, FirstCare (owned by Baylor Scott & White), Community Health Choice, and CHRISTUS. The best thing you can do is check to see which plans are offered in your area, look up all of your preferred doctors on the plan's provider directory to see if they are in network, and check the formularies to see if your drugs are covered. Most of the plans are HMOs so it's important to know that you will have to go to your PCP and get a referral before you can see a specialist. Some plans might even limit when you can use urgent care instead of seeing your PCP. Also, be sure you understand how a deductible works and how much your will be. One of the biggest complaints I see is that people don't understand that they have to pay their entire deductible before the insurance will pay anything. I recommend only choosing a plan that you can afford to pay the entire deductible for (i.e. if you don't have $5000 in savings then don't choose a $5000 deductible). More on reddit.com

Insurance in TX?
Texas has ACA plans through healthcare.gov. Are you independent from your mom / parents (in terms of taxes)? Do you have any income? If so, how much? Upon moving to TX, you'll qualify for a 60-day window to purchase a policy through healthcare.gov. In Texas, the local BCBS license is held and operated by HCSC. You need to make at least 100% of the federal poverty level to qualify for subsidies to help pay for the insurance in Texas. More on reddit.com

r/HealthInsurance on Reddit: Healthcare Marketplace Options - Are there ANY good ones? - Texas
October 16, 2022 -

I know next to nothing about the marketplace, I have been reading as much as I can, but every time I search a specific insurer/group by name, I get a litany of horror stories.

I qualify for a special sign up based on losing insurance when I moved, I'd rather pay a little more each month than have an unknown amount I owe at a later date, if that makes sense.

Is there a trick or rhyme or reason to whittling down what options are best? I mean, I have no idea what my usage of the services will be. So I can't really guesstimate there. I could be there every day, or I could go once a year or less, it all depends on what they find and how bad it is.

Any and all advice would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Edit: To add if it makes a difference, I am Male/43 and I'm going to likely need a full work up to see where I am at health wise. I haven't been to a doctor in 7 years. I have zero doubt there isn't something going on with me health wise, covid did a # on me (even with the vaccine), and I have some lingering other issues that seem to effect my energy and feeling good any given day.

For Texas, your best bet would be BCBS TX as they are the only ones who operate state wide and have the largest provider network. Those other players are not state wide and have very small provider network so you will have a hard time finding care. I would stay away from Molina, Oscar and Ambetter as many complaints from people stating that the doctor tells them that they do not take that insurance even though they are on the provider list.

SO I recently moved to Fort Worth and don't use to use my god awful choice for health care which is United HC. (Thanks Fedex)

So after looking at the ACA Marketplace I'm considering these final two

Aetna with or without CVS Health (Not sure how this works anyway with CVS)

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas

I don't mind using an HMO

I take 8 different prescriptions some are for mental health while some are for medical conditions like HBP. All have been around for a while and aren't advertised (like OZempic)

I usually see a doctor for a once a year checkup along with routine panels of blood work

I'm just fat and overweight so I know that needs work.

Looking for something easy to usem in town though I'll drive to Dallas or surrounding areas if I have to. For the past 20 years I've had Kaiser Permanente out in southern California. Appreciate the help!
