I'm looking for recommendations of great movies. Movies that are hidden gems would be awesome and even movies that are just great in all aspects
Movies that went under the radar, or movies that you taught didn't get a deserved praise or just movies that no one has ever watched before. And also explain what makes this movie/movies so great or intersting. These can be indies, art houses or foreign....etc Go crazy! . [EDIT: thanks for the recommendation guys, i feel like i should throw in some too. I recommend 'seven psychopaths', 'Raw' (2016) and 'Sexy beast', thanks again]

Looking for a few hidden gem/underrated movies (or series). I'm a pretty big movie buff so I've seen a lot of the classics that you would expect people to suggest watching. Enjoy most genres (not musicals or romance) and runtime doesn't matter. I'll watch foreign films if they're good quality (Parasite was fantastic and I recommend the new two-part 3 musketeers). Interesting plot, good acting, unique style, shock ending. Feed me please
Mainly I like psychological thrillers,action,sci-fi,suspense,etc.
For example these are some films I really enjoyed -tenet-chaos walking -the hunt -shutter island
-shot caller My own hidden gems -wheelman -the nice guys -old -what Josiah saw
Edit- woah thanks for all the suggestions gonna get to them now .
I watch a lot of movies so chances are that I must have watched all the popular movies and the critically acclaimed ones. Also I watch movies in most foreign languages if they are good.
Can anyone recommend good movies from the last couple of years that went largely unnoticed.
Let me start by recommending the movie Vengeance(2022) written and starring BJ Novak from The Office. It's a fantastic comedy-crime movie that very few people watched.
Any other recommendations would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Every once in awhile I stumble across something that wasn't really given much publicity but turns out to be amazing. Share your favorite finds!
Hello!
Like probably a lot of users in this subreddit, I have a major issue about movies: I have the feeling that I have seen all the good movies available on the market. I watch about 20-35 movies per month since the last 20 years, so the selection of amazing movies is getting shorter month after month.
Some days, I can spend hours trying to find a 'Hidden gems' movie that I have never seen before. When I find one, it's the best feeling ever!
If you think that you know a really good 'hidden gems' movie that you are convinced that not a lot of people know about, please share your list here! 😊 I am really looking for mostly unknown movies, not movies widely available on Netflix.
Here is for example a short selection of movies that are either underrated and unknown in general :
· Kikujiro : Definitely my favorite Japanese movie. It’s a very light comedy/drama with a unique style (and the theme song is incredible).
· The Ninth Gate : A very dark and occult movie by Roman Polansky. It’s definitely the most underground movie lead by Johnny Depp.
· Babel : An amazing international drama movie. You follow 3 different stories that are all linked together, event if they are happening on 3 different continents.
· Martyrs (The 2008 original French version) : Not only my #1 horror movie of all time, but also in my top 10 of the best movies ever made. The movie is not only extremely brutal, but the psychological aspect will haunt you for months… You will not be able to stop thinking about it. This movie is very underrated, probably because it may be too hard to watch.
· The Mighty : A beautiful movie about friendship. If you are looking for a movie to cry, pick this one!
· Le diner de con (The Dinner Game) : This movie is very popular in France and Canada, but almost unknown everywhere else. This is so far one of the best comedy I have even seen! But it definitely help to appreciate it if you can speak French.
· The Belko Experiment : I really liked this movie. I very good entertaining horror/thriller.
· Leave No Trace : A drama based on a true story with a very good father/daughter relationship theme. The acting performances are really great.
· Rockstar : Musical movie based on real events. It follows the career of a fan who became the lead singer of his favorite rock band. For the purpose of this movie, they created a real rock band (Steel Dragon) and composed a whole rock album (with the guitarist Zakk Wylde). Probably of the best movie soundtrack.
Some of the best movie experiences come from stumbling across something you didn’t expect it could be a film you found while scrolling late at night, something recommended by accident or even a random DVD or streaming pick that ended up sticking with you. Those hidden gems often end up being more memorable than the big blockbusters. What’s the best hidden gem movie you randomly discovered and ended up loving?
I have been thinking about the concept of a cinematic hidden gem and the movies that come to mind vary drastically. When I think of a hidden gem I don't necessarily think of what is hidden to film buffs but more so lesser known movies to the general audience. I know a lot of people who are into movies but hadn't heard of these movies and I'm thinking of lists for them. Ones that immediately spring to mind for me are "Road To Perdition", "Good Time" , "The Grey", "Be Kind Rewind", "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang", "Quiz Show", "The Majestic", and "Pleasantville". Do you think it's fair to consider these lesser known and what are your favorite lesser known movies you like to recommend to people?
I have two personal favorites, Both of which should be on the Netflix instant queue.
How to Be a Serial Killer: a sort of Faux-Motivational video designed to teach you how to be a serial killer. It follows Mike Wilson, a charismatic business man, (think like this, but with more murder) as he teaches his Protégé about his rather unique outlook on life, Really great black comedy movie. (Note: the Director of this movie also directed this wonderful piece of WTF
and
Fat Head which is a slightly corny answer to Super Size Me. It follows a comedian who shows that our fear of fatty foods might actually make it harder for us to lose weight. Changed how I looked at the food I ate
Those are mine. I pretty much show them to whoever I can ensnare into watching a movie with me. Like some sort of horrible reverse spider that tangles you in its web, pumps you full of independent films, then releases you to infect others.
For those of you with Netflix:
Netflix Instant for HTBASK
Netflix instant for Fat Head
TL/DR: Fat head. How to Be a Serial Killer. Now you.
The Legend of 1900
Swimming With Sharks (1994): Kevin Spacey plays a horrible boss 17 years before his role in Horrible Bosses. Great Ending.
Kevin Spacey
Frank Whaley
Michelle Forbes
Session 9 (2001): A great psychological thriller, filmed in an actual abandoned insane asylum. Also a great, if disturbing ending
David Caruso
Peter Mullan
Josh Lucas
The Netflix for you algorithm is god awful and always pushes the worst movies. The same goes for most of the movies they showcase in any category, but I know there are hidden gems. They are just hard to find.
What are some of your favorite hidden gems on Netflix? Preferably cyberpunk-esk Sci-Fi but any genre is fine.
I’m looking for a good movie thats not well known that you came across and loved, it doesn’t have to be some obscure movie but something thats not really well known and maybe even underrated, thanks!
I just rewatched Sister Act. Fuckin Sister Act. Goddamn Sister Act. And you know what? It's a fun damn movie. It "holds up." But you won't see it on any AFI top 100, Imdb top 250, Reddit top 250, or Sight & Sound's latest canon. But you will find it as #272 on the list of highest grossing movies. Higher than Wayne's World, higher than Unforgiven, and higher than Home Alone II: Fucked in Wherever.
And you know what is #179 on that box office list? It made $167m domestic off a $10m budget. It was #1 at the box office for two weeks, then for two weeks two other movies claimed the title, and then this movie came back to #1 in its fifth week. Fifth highest grossing movie of 1987. Higher than Predator, Robocop, Lethal Weapon, and Good Morning, Vietnam. Directed by Spock himself - it's Three Men and a Baby.
And yes, this is the kind of shit that LLewyn Davis would rail against. Money =/= quality. No shit. But- knowing the crowd pleasers of different eras is massively entertaining. You'd want to know the most popular song of 1340, and how it was different than the shitheel bubble gum pop of the 1350s with its optimism and lack of bubonic plagues.
What popular movie from decades ago that didn't win any awards or find its way to any critic top 500 list do you think deserves its time in the sun again?
Have dreams will travel is such a weird one but it may be my new favorite movie. The plot is nothing special 2 kids walking across the country to get a better home. The part of this movie that made me think and what really made me love it is the story isn't about aging kids who follow their hormones and go on a crazy adventure, it's about adults facing adult problems but fit in children's bodies, but that along with the dramatic darkness in the end is what gives this movie such a special feeling.
The movie also really makes you feel like it was made in the 1960's despite it being made in 2007. The camera's grainy feeling and a bit of a sepia filter makes you think this movie was made in the 60's or 70's. I truly and honestly recommend anyone that hasn't seen this movie to go watch it right now it is the best movie I've seen in a very long time. With that being said what's your favorite hidden movie gem.
Hi movie lovers, can you please recomend some hidden gem comedy movies, something that isnt in all top 30 lists , for example clercks, euro trip , less know funny movies . Hope to find at least one I didn't watch . Thanks in advance for your suggestions.
Since there is not a lot of new quality stuff now a days to look forward to. And every new release seems like a copy of a copy of copy, i was hoping great folks of this sub could drop in some mentions to hidden gems of the past. Movies which are rarely/never get mentioned here.
I will start.
-
The Messenger (2009). War drama starring Ben Foster and Woody Harrelson. If you think you have seen it all you are in for a surprise. Remember that titanic quote "It hits you like a thousand knives stabbing you all over your body". Well, this felt the same. I was surprised that there was not a single fucking thread about it. Even those "i feel this ___ doesn't get enough love here" one's.
-
Coriolanus (2011). I was gonna say it was a "modern" adaptation of work of Shakespeare. But it's really not. Directed by Ralph Fiennes, starring Ralph Fiennes and Gerard Butler. It's very intense and awe inspiring.
-
Omkara (2006). Another Shakespeare adaptation. But this time in modern setting. A bollywood movie, but don't let that stop you from giving this one a chance.
That's all from me. Now your turn...
Obligatory shoutout to What we do in the Shadows, Moon, Tucker and Dale, etc, etc. Because if these movies get mentioned again for hidden gems, i am gonna delete this whole thread.
Just Kidding
Maybe not.
Thanks in advance.
