Every year at our local Comic Con, I always do a panel on horror films. Last year I asked the sub for recommendations, and I got some great ones. I need a really scary, unpredictable horror movie that will chill my bones. No teens getting lost in the woods Texas Chainsaw rip-offs. Something recent-ish would be great. Thanks for your help!
I like fast-paced movies with a lot of action and gore. The slow burns don't really do it for me.
My guilty pleasure movies are Vicious Fun, Mayhem, The Hunt, The Killing Room, Day Shift, Renfield, and You're Next.
I think Atterados (Terrifed) was a perfect movie.
I recently watched and enjoyed Vivarium, Annihilation, The Pope's Exorcist, and They Cloned Tyrone, which are all on Netflix.
Netflix isn't really known for having great movies anymore, but they seem to have a large collection of horror at the moment.
Which ones are worth watching?
Edit: Kindly let me know which ones are worth watching even if you personally think it's a masterpiece. Just let me know if you think I'd enjoy it.
It’s Halloween season! Here are the 5 best scary movies I’ve watched in 2023, with something about each one.
Huesera: The Bone Woman: Pregnancy/maternal horror, and how both can strip women of their identity, is pretty unexplored, but that serves as the crux to this movie. I absolutely loved the atmosphere in this one, and it stuck with me for a long time after. Instantly became one of my favorite horror movies ever.
Possession: A surreal and haunting psychological horror film from the early 1980s. It starts as the story of a disintegrating marriage against the backdrop of Cold War Berlin, but as Isabelle Adjani’s character takes a very Repulsion or Darling type dive into madness, the story veers hard into strange horror. It is certainly incredibly weird but definitely unforgettable.
A Dark Song: A true hidden gem, this gripping and atmospheric psychological horror film revolves around a grieving mother who hires an occultist to perform a complex ritual to contact her deceased son. It has a slow burn approach and tons of nuance to the characters that hint at all sorts of unspoken connections as it builds escalating dread. Instantly one of my favorite movies of any genre I’ve ever seen, A Dark Song is a masterclass in building tension and exploring grief.
Kill List: Dark, disturbing, and bleak, this movie is about a financially struggling hitman who is pulled back into the world of contract killing—but when his marks all seem to know him, he begins to realize nothing is as it seems. Superbly acted and harrowing, the movie expertly blends elements of crime, psychological horror, and occult mystique to create amazing atmosphere.
The Wailing: Somehow I slept on this when everyone was raving about it several years ago, but this is honestly one of the best made horror movies I’ve ever seen. The story follows a small-town police officer investigating a series of bizarre and gruesome deaths that seem to be connected to a mysterious outsider. With its eerie atmosphere and impeccable cinematography, the movie is deeply unsettling as it explores themes of fear, paranoia, and the clash between traditional beliefs and modern skepticism.
My bf is off work tomorrow and I asked him to watch a scary movie with me and have popcorn and snacks and drinks the whole thing! I'm not sure what movie to watch so I figured Id ask what you guys favorite Netflix scary/horror/thriller movies are?

Every October I like to do a 30 day marathon of horror movies/series and make a list of what I watched that year.
I used to choose what I was going to watch on a day to day basis but this sometimes lead to me not having enough time to choose and missing the 30 day mark.
This year I would like to have a list ready and add a movie per day. I'm also looking to watch recent GOOD horror movies. All genres of horror are welcome.
As of right now, what's your top 5 new releases of the year and why? Here's mine:
5) M3GAN-There's a lot dumb about this movie, but it's charmingly dumb. M3GAN is a really fun villain, there's some good kills in the unrated version, and there's some fun social commentary about using technology as a poor substitute for good parenting. I have a soft spot for this one because the director did Housebound, which is one of my favorites. That's a much better movie, but I appreciated the similar sensibilities in this.
4) Evil Dead Rise-This is probably my least favorite film of the Evil Dead franchise, but it's still pretty good, if not something of a rehash. The heroine is a bit flat, but Alyssa Sutherland as the prime deadite is pretty great. Also the scalping scene in the beginning really sticks with me for some reason.
3) Renfield-A lot of people didn't like this. My biggest complaint is I don't really like CGI blood. That said, Nicholas Cage as Dracula was a dream come true and Nicholas Hoult as Renfield isn't shabby either. It's a breezy comedy and a lot of fun.
2) Influencer-I typically don't like this sort of film, but Cassandra Naud really carried it. She is absolutely magnetic and I enjoyed watching everything she did. The story has some twists and turns (along with some predictable stuff), but I was generally satisfied with how everything went down. The locations were amazing too.
1)Infinity Pool-This one towers above all the others for me. Brandon Cronenberg did it again. Mia Goth's performance is great, the premise is great, and I like the themes of class privilege and cultural imperialism.
"when evil lurks" the best horror movie of year 2023. please give this movie a chance you will not regret and if you consider any other movie best movie of the year please let me know
What is the best horror movie on all of Netflix? (I don't seem to find any of them scary)
And by good, I mean I should have a sense of satisfaction after the movie ends, that I’ve seen something worthwhile and haven’t wasted my time. I’ve been pissed off so much over the last few days watching crappy movies (which I thought would be good) and wasting my time.
What's up yall. With the spooky season more or less right around the corner I have decided to share my thoughts on some of my favorite horror movies for you to watch.
Obvious disclaimer: Only my personal opinion on all of these, if you disagree or feel that I have forgotten something feel free to let me know in the comments! I am always on the lookout for new recommendations.
The movies are in no particular order.
Barbarian (2022) - A very recent addition to my list, a great movie that starts off slow and mysterious before going off the rails fast.
Skinamarink (2022) - Gripping tension througt the whole movie that is (almost) never let go. Unique experience with it's special camerawork. Best watched alone.
Malignant (2021) - At the beginnig it seems like your average Halloween horror flick, but don't let that deceive you. This movie goes absolutely bonkers and has one of my favorite movie twists.
Cobweb (2023) - A basic horror movie for the most part (emphasis on most!), and a perfect fit for a night with some friends. Also you get to see Homelander as a loving parent for once, isn't this nice.
Ghost stories (2017) - Similiar to Cobweb this is also a very solid horror movie to watch with some friends. It is a collection of different monsters, so there is bound to be something for everyone.
Possum (2018) - One of my favorite horror movies and one that I do enjoy on every rewatch. The performances are phenomenal and the movie is always keeping the watcher second guessing what is or is not real.
Hell house LLC (2015) - A haunted house flick with a found footage style. What could be cooler? Be wary of clowns.
The woman in black (2012) - I am guessing that most people have seen this movie anyways and I will say that it is not a incredible movie. But the aesthetic and creepy atmosphere of an old victorian house is just something I cannot shake off.
The house of the devil (2009) - A solid slasher movie about a girl in a big empty house, but where this movie really shines is it's soundtrack. *Chefs kiss*
The house that Jack built (2018) - Ever wondered what a movie about a sociopathic, perfectionist serial killer would look like? Doesn't matter, here it is anyway. Can be pretty disturbing at times. Really good but also really long.
Hereditary (2018) - A cinematic and thematic master piece. The performance of the cast is something to behold. A must watch for every horror fan.
Lake Mungo (2008) - A documentary style horror movie about a missing girl. If you have a soft spot for ghost documentaries you will love this.
Grave encounters (2011) - A more abnoxious style of ghost documentary will be found in this movie. We follow a group that doesn't really believes in ghosts but is always trying to deceive their audience for monetary gain. But this time they maybe have bitten off more than they could chew.
Butterfly kisses (2018) - I really enjoyed this found footage movie about a fabricated Urban Legend. Not only scary but also an interesting character study.
Evil Dead (2013) - If you haven't seen this and are a fan of over the top gore/body horror, you're missing out.
Insidious (2010) - A classic movie that is beloved by many for a reason. Though I did not like the new movies, the original one still slaps imo. The main demon just has such a cool design.
The thing (1982) - Body horror at it's best. The practical effects are incredible even so many years later. Maybe don't watch this if you like dogs.
Alien (1979) - Ridley Scotts Magnum Opus is brimming with atmosphere and tension. Always wondering if there could be something around the next corner of the spaceship Nostromo.
Midsommar (2019) - This movie is more of a psychological horror for the most part. Though it does ramp up the shinanigans towards the last act. The themes this movie depicts are really interesting and it is also SO pretty.
The ritual (2017) - Some guys get lost while hiking through a skandinavian forest. Though the moie has a deeper meaning, that was the thing that hooked me initially and keeps me coming back to it.
The wailing (2016) - This movie has also become a classic for many asian horror fans. This korean horror film can be witty at times, but also incredibly dark.
The Babadook (2014) ... Dook Doook Doooook. Gives me goosebumps every time. Really good movie about an overworked mother struggling with her overcompulsive son, and also a demon.
The Conjuring (2013) - Probably the movie that everyone and their mom watches on Halloween. Or so they should, because it is a really solid posession movie.
The Void (2016) - Finally something truely Lovecraftian on this list. Don't watch this movie when you have eaten something tho, just a friendly suggestion.
Color out of space (2019) - Another great movie that is based on a story by H.P. Lovecraft. Starring Nicolas Cage of all people, so you know this will be a wild ride.
The Blair witch project (1999) - A group of 3 go out into the woods to record a documentary about the so called Blair witch. After a while they seem to have lost their way, who would have guessed?
Splinter (2008) - A great body horror movie taking place on a gas station in rural america.
The exorcist (1973) - The granddaddy of the whole Exorcist movie trend that is continuing to this day. Though funnily enough this one is probably the most creative one. A spectackle from start to finish with some very interesting characters and superb performances.
Overlord (2018) - Nazis and body horror. Not sounding like your typical horror movie, but a very fun experience none the less.
Ju On (2002) - This one I hold near and dear to my heart. There is just something about the main antagonist Kayako that gives me the heebie jeebies, even to this day.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) - Probably a very controversial opinion, I really enjoyed the one from 1974 so if you would rather watch that one then that is great. I just really enjoy the visual spectacle which is much more present in this one. Also: What is more metal than a killer waring his victims faces, so if you enjoy gore then this is an easy recommend.
Suzzanna: Buried Alive (2018) - A very interesting take on the revenge movie genre, also the ghost is creepy as hell imo.
In a hotel for a few days and the only TV option is netflix (we’re getting out and having adventures also but will also have a lot of downtime for various reasons). What are the best horror movies available to stream there right now? Bonus points if there's no obvious social commentary/class warfare/clear allegories to racism, homophobia etc.. Usually a fan of that but honestly at this point I need a break. Looking for a horror movie to be a relaxing break from the horror of real life.
Just need some help finding some good movies to watch over the next couple of weekends! With so many streaming services and foreign horrors, there will be many I have missed that I should watch. Please help me make a list!
