I genuinely cannot understand why I am not hearing more about this show. I was on Prime looking for something to watch- didn't have to be horror. I saw that the pilot of this show, "FROM", was set to expire in 6 days, and the little synopsis sounded intriguing. I have a short attention span and am very unwilling to give new shoes a try unless I've heard good things from other people, so I completely expected to shut it off in 5 minutes. But I wound up binging it. My boyfriend also loved it, which is a major deal, because I can't even get him to sit through a movie when I let him choose what we watch. I just put it on for myself while he was on his phone and he couldn't look away. It's gripping and compelling from the jump.
I don't want to give away too much because it's a lore-heavy show where you kind of uncover the mystery of the environment over time (similar to LOST), but the premise is simple: an old-timey town where the people cannot leave, and are hunted at night. The acting is surprisingly excellent- even the child actors are good- and the atmosphere is incredible. The pacing is decent (slow at times, but overall alright), and the gore is minimal but extremely effective when used. The "hunters" (being purposely vague here), are not over-utilized, and are actually quite terrifying. The plot is simple enough that you don't get lost and dragged into unnecessary rabbit holes, but it's compelling enough to make you care about the characters and the mystery itself. It's kind of sci-fi horror with elements from Stephen King and Twin Peaks. In fact, Stephen King himself tweeted about how impressed he's been with the show. It also has a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.
If anyone is interested, the show was Epix (now MGM+). It is still on Amazon Prime and I don't see an expiration warning anymore. If you like atmospheric horror with real, actual horror elements (not just dread that rarely goes anywhere), this has been an absolute delight and one of my new favorite series. I really hope it starts catching on so it gets renewed for S3! If you're looking for a summer binge, this is the one.
Tl;Dr- Go watch this Stephen King-approved horror show on Amazon Prime or MGM +. It's very atmospheric, mysterious, and has actual, honest-to-god, horror like I've never seen in any other television series. You will not regret it.
