6 Live-Action Movies Based On Anime That Were Good (& 7 That Missed The Mark)
December 27, 2021 - Kenshin Himura, popularly known as Samurai X, is one of the best-known characters in Japanese anime, created diligently by artist Nobuhiro Watsuki and director Kazuhiro Furuhashi. Telling the tale of a Meiji-era samurai, Rurouni Kenshin is eloquent and historically sound in its depiction. Maintaining these qualities in a live-action movie seemed challenging, but director Keishi Ohtomo made sure that the live-action version of this iconic fictional samurai remained just as awe-inspiring as the animated version.

February 7, 2024 - In the live-action film adaptation, Manji becomes the bodyguard of an orphan named Rin Asano and leads her on a campaign of revenge against the samurai clan who murdered her parents. The movie is pretty dark and violent, but somehow has sweetness as well as heart. Blade of the Immortal has also been adapted into a pair of anime television series.

r/movies on Reddit: What are some good live-action Japanese movies?
February 9, 2022 -

(... in terms of anything, just as long as it's a good movie)

'Cause the nomination of Drive My Car in the current Oscars and the general popularity of anime (movies) made me realize that most people (including me) don't realize that Japan has a big live-action film industry because they mostly only know Japan for anime (in terms of movies/TV)

One good Japanese movie I know is Audition, which is about a man who wants a new wife because his previous one died of cancer, so he sets up a movie role audition for women and finds the woman he likes the most. Let's just say he's gonna regret choosing the woman she chose

r/Letterboxd on Reddit: Suggest some Japanese live-action flicks
March 18, 2023 -

I've been meaning to get more into Asian Cinema, especially Japanese live-action films. I have seen a bunch of anime - mostly studio Ghibli and so on and so forth. I wish to watch more live-action films and get deeper into their culture.

The above films/shows are the ones I've seen. I sorted by Watched and films produced in Japan so ignore any non-Japanese films in there.

Due to Letterboxd weirdness, some of these films aren’t Japanese; like The Host which is by the Korean director Bong Joon-ho (who did Parasite) or Happy Together which is by the Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai. Not sure why Nope and Marie Antoinette are there either. You’re almost entirely missing the classic era of Japanese cinema - Ozu, Kurosawa, etc - when Japan was basically on top of the world. I’m sure other commenters are better educated on the matter and can recommend some from that era beyond the extremely obvious (Tokyo Story, Ikiru, Fires on the Plain, Ran, Sword of Doom, Yojimbo, etc). Some modern Japanese movies worth checking out: Battle Royale Unforgiven (Japan-set remake of the Clint Eastwood movie) Departures The Twilight Samurai When the Last Sword is Drawn Adrift in Tokyo The Woodsman and the Rain Black Rain The works of Takeshi Kitano (Hana-bi, Kikujiro, his Zatoichi reboot, Sonatine, Kids Return, etc) Some Takashi Miike movies (The Happiness of the Katakuris, his remakes of 13 Assassins and Hara-kiri, The Bird People of China, Audition, Gozu, Sukiyaki Western Django, etc) The works of Hirokazu Kore-eda (Still Walking, Shoplifters, Like Father Like Son, After Life, Nobody Knows, etc)

A recommendation from each decade: Tokyo Drifter (1966) -- Old school Yakuza movie Lady Snowblood (1973) -- One of the best revenge flicks and the primary inspiration for Kill Bill Ran (1985) -- Samurai epic about a kingdom falling apart Ringu (1998) -- Japanese horror film that kicked off a swath of Hollywood remakes Battle Royale (2000) -- The original "put a bunch of kids on an island and make them fight" First Love (2019) -- A more modern Yakuza movie Drive My Car (2021) -- A long, emotional exploration of a play director's coping with loss
