r/iPadPro on Reddit: Keyboards for M4 iPads, looking for tips /suggestions
August 20, 2024 -

I know the two main keyboards people recommend are

  1. Apple magic keyboard $399 plus tax (openbox: $299)

  2. Logitech combo touch $299.99 plus tax

I also noticed ESR has decent ratings, I just got their folio and the quality is nice. Does anyone have their keyboard folio in the picture I posted? That keyboard is only $149.99

Prices in CAD. (Imagine 35-40% off in USD)

I have the ESR case pictured. It is worth the $88 USD I paid for it. Pros: * Portrait mode - I use portrait mode a good bit when reading through documents or typing notes. This is the #1 reason I purchased this instead of the Magic Keyboard. * Has rubber bump stops so the keys won't touch your screen and leave marks. * Can put the iPad up a little instead of having it connect to the bottom (the image is showing this on the right where the iPad is elevated a bit above the case). This only works well if you are typing at a desk, as it'll become unstable if you want to touch it like this. * More stable than Magic Keyboard, due to having a battery built into the base. * Costs about 1/3 the price of the Magic Keyboard * Has a flap to hold your Apple Pencil securely * Has a built in case for when you pull your iPad off and hold it like a tablet. Cons: * Heavy compared to the Magic Keyboard, due to battery in the base. * Doesn't tip back as far as the magic keyboard, so your viewing angles are a bit more limited. * You have to remember to charge the keyboard part separately. * Connects over Bluetooth, so it takes a few seconds for your keyboard to wake up once it goes idle. * Doesn't feel as nice as the magic keyboard. * Has a non-haptic touchpad. * Touchpad is good, but the Magic Keyboard is better. * Keyboard and case will show oils from your hands and get shiny within the first week of ownership. * The built-in case isn't magnetically compatible with other ESR cases/ folios, so you can't buy one of the non-keyboard ones and easily transfer between the two when you don't want to take a heavy keyboard case with you. * Isn't compatible with any of the fancy stands that use the smart connector on the back of the iPad, since the case covers those pins up. * While the case is very thin, it is thick enough to get in the way of some USC-C/ Thunderbolt cables and prevent them from making a solid connection with the iPad. TLDR: Get the ESR if you want to save money, don't mind extra weight, can remember to charge it weekly, use portrait mode with a keyboard, and want a case that safely hold your Apple Pencil. | Get the Magic Keyboard if you want something lightweight, you don't having a case on your iPad when using as a tablet is for you, you won't remember to charge the keyboard, can't handle any Bluetooth lag or your use case requires easy access to the pins on the back of the iPad.

Im kinda interested in one too but Im not willing to pay crazy money for one that doesnt even use the smart conector. I might wait for 3rd party one (if it even comes out) or save for the Apple's official keyboard

The 3 Best iPad Pro Keyboard Cases of 2026 | Reviews by Wirecutter
November 20, 2025 - If you want a premium trackpad and keyboard, the Apple Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro (11-inch, M4/M5) is the best choice. It offers adequate hardware protection combined with a great keyboard and trackpad experience.
People also ask

Why you should get a keyboard for iPad

A keyboard for the iPad is useful because it makes typing more efficient and comfortable. For longer texts or documents, a physical keyboard is usually faster and more precise than typing on the touchscreen.

The use of a keyboard promotes a better hand posture, reduces fatigue during longer writing sessions and thus reduces the load on the hands. In addition, navigating and editing texts is much easier by using keyboard shortcuts.

Does a keyboard affect the use of the iPad in other applications?

Yes, a keyboard can interfere with the use of iPad in certain applications, especially if they are heavily dependent on touch gestures. It can be cumbersome to switch between keyboard and touchscreen, which can interfere with the workflow. Therefore, it is advantageous if the keyboard has a touchpad.

May 23, 2025 -

I bought it for work while traveling. Weight, protection and word processing concerns. It will be thrown in my personal item which depending on the trip may or may not have a separate laptop sleeve.

I would LOVE a forward delete key, this is my biggest frustration with anything Apple. Also backlighting.

I have a pencil but do not plan to use it much, I do mostly word processing, and Google sheets. I will most likely not be typing off-line on plane as I need access to the research online.

I am not creative or a gamer. Plan to use it for watching movies on planes as well. Does it make sense for me to also get a cheap case or is that overkill and another thing to bring?

The guy at the store recommended the logictech. Will probably be ordering from Amazon for a quick delivery in the US.

I looked at the magic keyboard, but other than the expense I don’t like how it doesn’t enclose the perimeter apparently

Apple Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro (M4) review
June 29, 2024 - The Apple Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro (M4) is a pricey bit of kit, and the iPad Pro (M4) isn’t included in the price (just in case that wasn’t clear), so you will need to factor in the cost for that tablet too.

Apple Magic Keyboard for M4 iPad Pro review: Magical | Cult of Mac
December 27, 2024 - The way the cantilever design makes the screen seem to float over the keyboard — brilliant. I’ve had strangers walk up and ask me where I got it as though it were some mysterious relic. The new version doesn’t fundamentally change the basic design. It just makes it better. The 13-inch M4 iPad Pro I’m using for this review weighs less than its predecessor, and that allowed Apple to move the integrated tablet stand farther back without unbalancing the accessory.
