Best knife set under $100?
Forget a knife set, if you mean just knives for cooking (as opposed to e.g. steak knives, etc.), then you really only need a couple of knives:
-
Chef knife. Get something like a Victorinox fibrox or Henkels twin master. These are plastic handled knives meant for commercial kitchens, but still have very good blades. They are $40-50, or half of what their fancier handled counterparts cost for the same blade.
-
Paring knife. Those cheap ones they have in the impulse isle at grocery or kitchen supply stores for $3 work quite well, I have a bunch and at that price they’re disposable if they get dull. If you want to splurge, find a place that has the Victorinox ones for about $8.
-
serrated bread knife. Any cheap one will do, you don’t need a fancy one to slice through a bagel.
-
if you get a 4th knife, I suggest a kitchen utility knife, again something like a fibrox will be good value
As for where to get them, even places like kitchen stuff plus has most of the items above. But also try Tap Phong, I’ve never bought knives there specifically, but the place is among the best in the city for most other kitchen supplies.
More on reddit.comI'm not sure if the best this is the right sub, but what's the best block set for under $100?
Wanting to build a set. What are the top three quality budget (under $100) I should start with?
What's the Best Kitchen Knife Set For Under $100?
If you have a restaurant supply store near you go check it out. They should have some zwilling stamped knives with yellow handles. They'll likely be about $15-25/knife. They are tough, can be sharpened and have a solid colored handle. Pickup a chefs knife, a slicer, boning knife, and paring knife with enough left over for a cheap block and they'll have a decent set that meets the requirements. http://www.wasserstrom.com/restaurant-supplies-equipment/Product_6032034

Preferably with a wooden block to hold them in.
I cant tell whats good quality based on online pics and reviews anymore. I need a set that will last some years and wont rust after the 3rd use - so I guess it will at least need to be stainless steel.
Where did you buy yours and for how much? How is it holding up?

Yes to all of this. You need one really good chefs knife and a paring knife and serrated edge knife. You also want a honing wand.
