It's strange because I have a Mac from 2011 and it's great and I also have one from 2008. Let's just increase the RAM and it works great. I also have a MacBook Pro from 2017, I would say, and only one drawback, the screen sometimes has a micro scratch. but I assume it's software since it comes and goes for weeks. Otherwise a very good option is the Asus vivobook, good brand, good price. RELIABLE

I would like it to have a good battery life, last me at least all 4 years if not more, and also around the ~$1000 range or less. A used Lenovo Thinkpad will work really well. At least 8 th generation intel cpu and 16 gb ram with windows 11 or a variant of Linux. You can get a Thinkpad T480 from 2018 for around 200 € or a T14 Gen1 from 2020 or gen 2 from 2021 around 400 € and any of those will last at least 5 years of not normal use but abuse as well.
