I’ve been working in IT for 30 years and HATE printers. Having said that Brothers are by far the ones that have the least issues. I have a color laser at my house I’ve used for 12 years and all I’ve had to do is add toner. The toner also lasts a long time. Whatever you do, DO NOT BUY AN HP. I’ve wasted years of my life with how much of a piece of shit those are. Even the 15k department ones. Epsons can be okay but still can have major issues. More to do with clogged ink due to not using it regularly. Replacing the heads is not really worth it.

I wanted to make a post about my printer. I recognize that a printer isn't necessarily a "buy-it-for-life" kind of thing, but I think you would be hard pressed to find something that represents this much of a value proposition and cost effective option as a laser printer. Specifically, a laser printer like my Brother that I bought.

Allow me to give a bit of context. My wife and I are both college students, and as you can imagine, have to print a lot of notes. Just this evening, my wife had to print something that was 19 pages long. Previously to purchasing our laser printer, we had one of those crappy Canon Pixma or whatever printers (the bargain printers that can be had sub-$100 at Walmart). I had finally had enough of this printer and so I decided I buy this Brother. I am sure glad that I did.

One of the issues with the Canon was that it was God awfully slow. A print job like my wife's aforementioned 19 page notes would've taken around 10 minutes to complete. The Brother probably took 1 minute, and that's being generous. And, that's with it printing on both sides of the page to save paper.

Another issue was that it guzzled ink cartridges. I am not exaggerating when I say that this single print job would've probably used half of the ink cartridges on our old Canon. Meanwhile, we've had this toner drum since the beginning of the year, and only now is it saying "Low Toner". However, all of the pages came out sharp and non faded, so I don't think it is as low as it may be leading on.

Finally, I just wanted a printer to do just that: print! I think one of the common faults of many new printers is that they're trying to do too much. I have a desk scanner. I don't need my printer to do that. It is much easier for me to use a standalone scanner that have to fiddle with making sure the page is in the right spot or else some of it may be cut off on the scan. I also wanted a printer that I could just hook up via USB to my computer, no internet needed. Yes, I do have it hooked up to an Apple Airport in the office, but that is more so for the ability to print from other computers like my MacBook Pro, instead of just my iMac. I just wanted something SIMPLE, and I am glad that I purchased my Brother laser printer.

I’m finally done with cheap inkjet drama and want to switch to something more reliable. I’m looking for the best laser printer for home use that can handle regular document printing, occasional forms, maybe the odd ticket or label, without needing constant toner replacements or random “printhead cleaning” rituals. I don’t need anything super fancy, but built-in WiFi, decent print speed and not having it jam every other week would be nice. For those of you who made the switch from inkjet to laser at home, what did you buy and are you still happy with it after a year or two? I want to get a new printer because my current inkjet printer seems to be having more and more issues lately, and the ink dries up before we even get halfway through the cartridge. Which is saying something considering I have used this printer for college.

I would like a laser all-in-one printer (although fax is optional) that does color. I would say my price limit would be about $700. And prefferably something that will fit on my desk and not end up taller than I am. I dont really have brand preferences, but I have had tons of bad experiences with HP products, so I would like to avoid that brand unless people are really confident in a certain model.

Any suggestions?

I recommend Brother. The only problem is that they're in short supply because of supply chain disruptions. My MFC-L8900 is built like a tank.

I know I hear a lot about Brother laser printers but are they the best option for rare to occasional use? I just want something simple that I can count on to work for the times I do need it, and strongly prefer it to be color. I don't need any bells and whistles.

I was looking at this one because it seems to be basically the least expensive option HL-L3220CDW but there's a specific Amazon review that is worrying. (The review is for HL-L3210CW so not sure if that variation makes a difference). The review states that the printer locked him out because the printer thinks the black toner is empty, even though it's not empty. It won't even allow him to print in color and there is apparently no way to manually reset the toner status on this printer, unlike previous versions.

Brother HL-L3220CDW is a solid printer imo, but if you are worried, I’d recommend also checking out Canon imageCLASS LBP632Cdw . This is also a single function, and in the similar price category. For more option, I also highly recommend going through this huge datasheet of printers . Found this on a different thread. But its been super helpful.

I had the same question. Not using it often but still wanted decent print quality without crazy toner costs. This Medium post helped me figure out which ones don’t dry out or waste toner between uses. Hope it helps

Hi all,

I am in the market for a great printer. My print frequency is 10-20 pages per day / 365. I've bought most brands but it seems they all kinda fail quicker. Any suggestions?!

Doesn’t get much better than a Brother B/W Laser Printer. A vast majority of people agree. Just pick one. Do your homework though and look at the specifics. Tray Capacity, PPM, Wireless vs USB, and whether it’s important to you that it prints on both sides of the paper to cut down on paper cost. I personally went with a multi function Brother B/W Laser Printer with auto feed scanner that can scan both sides of the paper because I scan a bit and that makes it much more convenient for me that way as well as fax. If you scan based on what I saw it makes sense to combine these functions. That and take a look at the toner cartridges just to see how much those will cost you and which sizes it will take. Mine is big enough that the highest capacity toner cartridges will print an estimated 8500 pages and save a bit a money that way as well. I personally don’t buy the generic toner and only the Brother toner cartridges so from what I’ve seen Office Depot often has deals on toner.

I've been very happy with my Brother lasers. I have an old B/W that has been chuging along for well over 15 years. I bought their color laser multi-fuction duplex two years ago as an upgrade. It's awesome. The dual side scanning is so easy. The printing is great. We love the wireless printing from any device in the house. It doesn't do a good job printing photos. But on the other hand, we don't use photo paper, and it isn't a photo printer. So if I really need a photo printed, I can use Costco or some other printing services. Those guys have professional grade photo printers.

What would you like to accomplish?

I want a laser printer specifically for an image transfer art technique that MUST use toner rather than ink. So no inkjet. No HP. I would only be printing a few pages a week. If you want the best results possible, look for one that has a print resolution of 1200dpi or more (1200 is usually where it tops out). Not sure about Brother's image quality thanks to the way their toner cartridges work, but with original supplies, maybe worth a shot - Brother cartridges are a bit cheaper. Canon is fine, but original cartridges are expensive and if you need quality, I suggest you to stay away from non-genuine supplies. HP bad, you'll go mad. 300 bucks? Remember that cheaping out on the printer typically means spending more on it's supplies. With so little to spend, forget about large format. Or not if you're willing to go hunt for some deals on the 2nd hand market.

I like how OKI led printers printouts look. They are shiny/ glossy. They usually have software for colour calibration.

I want a printer that I'm not beholden to HP's BS cartridge issues. I don't print much at all, usually just a half dozen times a year and not much so figure a laser would be better as a cartridge would choke up. I don't print a lot of volume usually tax forms for myself and the occasional 2-3 page document. It's never much but it's vital when I do it. I don't care about brand name and it could use a USB cable to the desktop but I'd like it to be as small as possible. I had a HP and it simply came out with a software update that made the laser cartridges in it, that I had already been using, useless and said it would no longer print. Just out of spite I tossed it. I won't do business like that.

If you just want monocolor printing, then definitely Brother HL-L2405W , if you want color, then once again Brother HL-L3220CDW . For more options though, I highly recommend reviewing this comprehensive datasheet of printers . It lists almost all of the printers and their specs.

My mother has had a Brother Laser printer for probably 20 years and it still work perfectly. It looks fairly similar to the $99 one they sell now. I think she paid at least that much back when she bought hers. I’ve also seen it as the top rated budget laser printer on any reliable site I’ve looked at. She originally bought it for work and used it often. Then she retired and it gets used maybe once or twice a year. But it’s always reliable when one of our printers don’t work. I had 2 nightmare HP ink jets in a row so was using hers in emergencies. My first HP was great. Just became outdated. I switched to a Brother “inkvestment” printer a few years ago and it’s been great also.

Pretty much title. From my vast amount of research and personal experience, I am pretty much looking for a Brother printer under $200. Before I pull the trigger, I want to here what the people have to say. Mobile printing would also be a nice to have.

I'd recommend looking into Brother's laser printers in that price range. They tend to be cheaper to run in the long run compared to inkjets. Plus, they're usually faster.

I'm done with inkjet printers, I only print a couple pages every now and then and the ink is constantly drying up on me, I know I could just not have a printer and do printing at my local library or print service if I rarely print but I like to be able to have a printer to just print/copy on demand whenever I need to, and with how little I print the starter toner will probably last me 5 years or more

Trying to decide between these two laser printers, I've read that HP and Brother make really good laser printers, I'm leaning more toward the HP because ice read that the colors are better and the internal components (drum and fuses) last longer than on the Brother

I've installed 4 of the MFC-L3770CDWs. The 3780 is likely the next iteration. After 10 years of using them I've found Brother supports their printers longer than HP. The last HP I bought 10+ years ago I took to the dump while it was still under warranty.

I would go with any other brand other than HP. Brother and Cannon are respectable brands.

My brother runs an auto shop and needs a new printer. I’m thinking a color laser with scanner. He’s not a techie at all so it would need to be uber reliable. If your brother could possibly do without color, I would highly recommend going with a monochrome laser -- simpler mechanicals = higher reliability, fewer/easier refills and lower running cost. Win-win-win, especially in the dusty, particle-filled air of an auto shop (which tends to do an excellent job at killing printers, or anything with moving parts). As for a what to buy, first off, since this is for a business, I wouldn't mess around with anything refurbished. A few bucks skimped up front isn't worth the extra unknowns. You didn't list his print volume, but if he's only printing a few pages per day (or less), then a Brother MFC-L2000 series would work fine, example: MFC-L2710DW ( $249 @ Amazon ). If he's more up towards 100+ pages per day (ex: printing invoice copies for every customer) and/or scanning a lot, then I'd step up to an MFC-L5000 series, example: MFC-L5850DW ( $499 @ Brother ). In my experience, Brothers are pretty reliable and don't give you any problems for using aftermarket toner. Looking to replace an HP Inkjet after 16 years. I am a very low volume user. I might print a few pages every few months. I'm tired of buying a new $50 cartridge every time I need to print one page.

Not sure what brands or models are the best quality for the money but I do want to get a quality product that will last me another 15 or more years without having a revolving ink/toner cost. I DO NOT want to pay any product or service subscriptions, or get into a situation where it will become required later, and I do not like the idea of a company monitoring my amount of use or ink levels. I DO NOT want my ink/toner to dry out and have to be replaced because I don't print very often. I do not want to have to spend a lot to replace ink/toner so LONGEVITY OF THE INK/TONER WITH NON-USE is a big concern at this point. I'd like it be as compact as possible, like the size of an inket but I realize the technology is different, so it might have to be bigger.

Any ink based machine will dry out if not used for long intervals. So laser sounds like your only choice. If you are truly a low volume user, grab any color laser machine and the starter toners should last you a decade.

If you are low volume just get the cheapest one you can find as at the end of the day it doesn't matter you will never get through a single set of cartridges. Canon provide standard 2 year warranty, and often promotional 3 year warranty on all their product, and have relatively cheap printers, but very pricey toners. But again price of toners not that relevant when you're not printing.

Recently retired IT tech who did purchasing for our State agency. We switched from HP to Lexmark a few years ago and couldn't be happier. Hp's construction quality has gone down hill over the years and the consumable costs are getting out of hand. I would compare Brother to Lexmark. Make sure you look at the specs since you print at least 2,000 pages a month. Check the consumables. Which has a high capacity toner? What is the use life of the imaging drum? Does using off brand toner void the warranty (it usually does)? Do they have extended warranty and what is the repair process? Be smart and don't go for the cheapest, look for "Best bang for the buck"

If you are only what monochrome, then definitely Brother HL-L2405W . Nothing comes close to this. But with that said, there are cheaper laser printers. I recommend going through this list and datasheet of all printers . It lists several models under $100 range and also their specs. Makes it easy to compare.

Considering they have been around for over 40 years, it seems strange how hamstrung most modern consumer grade printers are.

Toner cartridge capacity is purposefully shrinking, programs like "instant ink" are looking to separate you from your money as efficiently as possible, and chintzy construction / planned obsolescence is very much a thing.

Has there ever been a "perfect" black and white laser printer with a nice long duty cycle, and cavernous toner cartridges?

this is not a request for purchase advice

I'm curious if there was ever a specific example of the "best" printer, hall of fame style.

I realize it isn't "good business" to release a good product that requires minimal maintenance with cheap consumables, but I hold out hope that some talented engineer was able to make an affordable reliable printer without upper management suits tearing through the project trying to figure out how to monetize everything.

Shopping for a printer pisses me right off, stirs reserves of cynicism I didn't know I had, moreso than any other product I can think of. Why is this specific industry so predatory?

HP LaserJet 4200/4250 is the common answer (which I agree with). I would say any of the earlier LaserJet 4000/4100 family were of similar caliber. Outside of the older LaserJets, I would give a nod to older Lexmark T-6xx family machines.

laserjet 4 series is the best in my opinion but the laserjet 3 was a great machine too. No color no fancy stuff but easy to repair dirt cheap toners and lasts forever

My main requirements are it works with color, cos we sometimes photo print for personal use, and that it's possible to refill rather than spend big buck on new toners, so either they don't have chips faking the fill level or are easy to reset.

Scanner optional but appreciated.

Do y'all have any tips for me? I'm so so done with flaky inkjets and I've read some nightmares about some more modern printers.

You can’t really BIFL when it comes to technology, but I’ve had good luck with Brother’s multi-function color laser printers.

For high quality color photos your best bet is a high quality inkjet with large refillable tanks. You want the kind that does self cleaning so it doesn't clog if you leave it sitting for a while. Laser printers are less hassle and the toner can sit for ages without going bad, but the photo print quality isn't as good. Text is better and cheaper though. Pick your poison. It's a trade off. I optimize for what I print most of the time: documents, thus laser. And if I need a high quality photo I send it to Walgreens down the street. FWIW I have a Canon ImageClass MF654CDW and a much older B&W Imageclass and they've been reliable workhorses.

Wirecutter (see link below) recommends the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP. But, I’ve heard a lot of complaints about HP printers from others in this community.

I’ve heard good things about Brother in general, but am looking to hear some recommendations about a few I’ve specifically had my eye on:

HL-L3290CDW (Doesn’t look like this has a feeder that would allow for scanning multiple pages at a time. It’s not a must-have for me but could be nice)

I recommend the Canon imageCLASS MF656Cdw for home, its cheaper than Canon MF753cdw. Canon MF753cdw is a great option if you also want ethernet and faster printing speeds. I don’t think you need to worry about that for home use. I recommend that you read through this datasheet on laser printers . It lists all the models and their specs, making it easy to compare.

Seconding the vote for the Canon MF753cdw. There's a reason why Canon more or less owns the color copier market, and it's because imaging is their core competency, and their consumer boxes benefit from the trickle-down effect. Brother doesn't have that upper-end portfolio or corresponding engineering IP, and it shows. Don't get me wrong -- their monochrome lasers are great disposable workhorses. But for color, I would choose Canon, even with the slightly higher running cost.
