r/BuyItForLife on Reddit: Would love your help picking a leather couch - all the ones I check out have bad reviews on r/buyitforlife or r/furniture!
July 10, 2024 -

Hi! We are moving to the USA from another country and we need to buy an entirely new home worth of furniture. I'm currently pulling my hair out looking for leather couches and would love any help anyone here can offer! Every couch I look up here or r/furniture has plenty of bad reviews. NB: I'm looking for a 3 seater/88'' couch in a kind of 'modern' look, such as the examples below.

  1. Article Sven: I love the look of this one and I was initially impressed to see it's a wirecutter top pick. However, so many reviews say that the cushions flatten out pretty quickly and the customer service is terrible.

  2. In lots of couch threads, I saw the flexsteel recommended. So I found the Endurance couch. It's definitely my least favourite visually, but I was considering it for better quality. However, there are several comments on r/furniture saying the quality has declined sharply after 2010. For example, the foam density is now <2.0 (which is apparently bad, IDK anything myself).

  3. Ikea Stockholm - actually the more expensive of the 3 options by about 4/500 usd. There are negative reviews about the quality of the leather on the ikea website. And r/ikea has so many complaints these days about reduced quality (not this couch specifically, but in generally).

However, at least it has a 25 year warrantee. I'm considering just getting this if I like the look of it in store, since we'll be getting a bunch of stuff from ikea anyway.

Any thoughts or recommendations? NB there are so many positive reviews of couches posted just a few months after purchase - I'm particularly interested in recommendations if you've had your couch over 1-2 years please!

Thank you so much in advance ... from a tired mother who doesn't have time to spend 6 hours researching every single purchase!!

EDIT: thank you so much everyone for the great suggestions. As a non American it’s hard to know where to start looking. I hadn’t ever heard of the majority of the places suggested and I look forward to doing more research from a more informed position. Im not moving for another month or so but I’ll let you know what we end up getting!

Are leather couches durable?
Yes! Leather lasts a long time as long as you take good care of it; think of it as nature’s performance material. Even so, life happens: Cats can scratch leather, and keys can poke a hole in it. It’s not foolproof, but there are many common-sense ways to keep it looking beautiful: Avoid putting your leather sofa or leather loveseat in direct sunlight, so the leather doesn’t fade. Place your leather sofa away from heating and air conditioning vents that can cause the leather to dry out and lose its elasticity. Don’t sit on your sofa with your keys, pens, or other sharp objects in your pocket—an

Pure aniline leather is the most natural. Expect scars, range marks, and variations in color and grain. This leather is highly sensitive to scratches and stains.

Looking for leather sofa
If you want made in USA you are going to pay for it, though furniture made in Asia has probably gone up in price since the pandemic, too. That said, American Leather is not the most affordable brand. If cost is a biggie for you, I'd look for a used sofa, people are getting rid of fine pieces all over the place these days, some very cheap or even free! Check out whichever wealthy enclave or high rise is nearest you, maybe try some vintage furniture dealers. Some companies that sell custom furniture will also have sales on returns and flawed pieces. Joybird does some work in US and manufacture right across the border, you might like their stuff (I don't know how it lasts, company's fairly newish). Consider sitting on a sofa before you buy it. And please, from someone who used to work in customer service at a furniture store, PLEASE measure EVERY doorway and stairway you expect to move that sofa through before you place your order. I have had leather pieces from West Elm (Austin swivel chair + ottoman, Erik wing chair, and Mid-century show sofa) and CB2 (2x Abruzzo chairs, Cuppa chair, and Alfred sofa). I’ve used cleaners, conditioners, supposed scratch removers, even tried restoring/dying a used Pottery Barn chair that was obliterated by a cat. I’m by no means an expert or authority. But I can shed some light on buying from these kinds of mass production companies. If you’re able to, try to see the pieces in-person. West Elm has stores, so if there’s one even sort of nearby…call and find out what they have on their floor. Even if they do not have the model you’re interested it, test drive any leather pieces they have and ask the exact leather type so you can then order the style you want in the material you prefer. Every one of these companies usually have a variety of different variations of leather from certain suppliers, but as long as it’s Aniline I think you’re ahead of the curve in terms of quality. You could also look on Craigslist/OfferUp/Facebook Marketplace to see if someone local is selling a leather piece from some of the other companies on your list that do not have a brick and mortar near you let alone at all. Go check them out, and if you don’t want to lead them on about a potential sale, be transparent and offer them financial compensation ($10-$20?) to take a look and ask them about it. I’m pretty sure you can also request/purchase swatches of specific leathers from some of these companies. It’s worth spending on swatches to ensure you end up with a sofa you truly love. Most complaints with these companies are about delayed delivery or damage during delivery. I get it, because if I invested thousands of dollars in a sofa that’s supposed to be delivered in a 6-8 weeks, but shows up 5 months later, I’d be pissed off. Oh, and when it arrives, one of the legs is bent or the wood trim is cracked? I’d post awful reviews anywhere I could lol. As for quality/feel complaints…Anyone who spends $5K on a sofa based solely on website pictures and no other research is flipping a coin. For those unfortunate souls who were misled/lied to by the companies or let down by their QC, well that’s just fucking ridiculous and I hope folks in here let you know which ones not to trust. That’s all I can think of for now. Good luck on your search, and congrats. Hopefully others in this sub with more expertise will chime in, I’d love to learn more about leather! More on reddit.com

What's the best type of leather for my sofa if I have a dog? | Blog | Roger + Chris | Custom Sofas
I think you're probably best-suited with something that's gonna be a little bit resistant to scratching, a little bit resistant to staining, and easily cleanable without causing discoloration or damage. There are a lot of beautiful, natural leathers out there that have a really very natural finish, and by natural I mean there's nothing really on top of them to give them sort of protection or any sort of adjustments to the finish.
