Hi! We are moving to the USA from another country and we need to buy an entirely new home worth of furniture. I'm currently pulling my hair out looking for leather couches and would love any help anyone here can offer! Every couch I look up here or r/furniture has plenty of bad reviews. NB: I'm looking for a 3 seater/88'' couch in a kind of 'modern' look, such as the examples below.
Article Sven: I love the look of this one and I was initially impressed to see it's a wirecutter top pick. However, so many reviews say that the cushions flatten out pretty quickly and the customer service is terrible.
In lots of couch threads, I saw the flexsteel recommended. So I found the Endurance couch. It's definitely my least favourite visually, but I was considering it for better quality. However, there are several comments on r/furniture saying the quality has declined sharply after 2010. For example, the foam density is now <2.0 (which is apparently bad, IDK anything myself).
Ikea Stockholm - actually the more expensive of the 3 options by about 4/500 usd. There are negative reviews about the quality of the leather on the ikea website. And r/ikea has so many complaints these days about reduced quality (not this couch specifically, but in generally).
However, at least it has a 25 year warrantee. I'm considering just getting this if I like the look of it in store, since we'll be getting a bunch of stuff from ikea anyway.
Any thoughts or recommendations? NB there are so many positive reviews of couches posted just a few months after purchase - I'm particularly interested in recommendations if you've had your couch over 1-2 years please!
Thank you so much in advance ... from a tired mother who doesn't have time to spend 6 hours researching every single purchase!!
EDIT: thank you so much everyone for the great suggestions. As a non American it’s hard to know where to start looking. I hadn’t ever heard of the majority of the places suggested and I look forward to doing more research from a more informed position. Im not moving for another month or so but I’ll let you know what we end up getting!
Hi everyone, looking for your tips experience and advice on a leather couch purchase! Comfort is most important and the couch we have now is very deep - we prefer a medium depth. Want this to be a long time investment :) thank you!
I’ve been searching for a new couch since a recently moved for a few months now. Ideally, I want a (genuine) leather couch. Critically, I want to be able to lean back and the backrest to support my head. I’m 5’11”.
I sat in a few couches at places like Restoration Hardware and most of their couches have really short backs and I didn’t find them comfortable at all (ex: their Maxwell collection).
However I did sit in their Lancaster and it was supremely comfortable. I also loved their Italian Brompton leather in Cocoa color.
Probably is: it’s $3,000-$4,000.
My living room is fairy small but the main focus will be the couch facing the TV... I have pretty nice audio equipment and I like watching a fair amount of movies, binge TV shows on weekends, gaming, etc — so again, I want it to be pretty damn comfortable. 7’ wide would be an ideal max length.
Aside from this couch, I saw that Article’s “Sven” was highly rated... but it has a pretty low back and I haven’t sat in that one.
Where should I be focusing my search? Pottery Barn? West Elm? ... honesty I don’t give two shits about the name - I just want a high quality leather, high comfort, and good styling (please no “blob” couches that look like an exploded LazyBoy).
PS: I’m fine purchasing second hand/outlet/floor model. Leather ages well... the main recliner I have from Arizona Leathers I snagged for next to nothing and looks and feels great after owning for 5 years. It’s probably 15+ years old now and I still love it but have to get rid of it now; won’t fit with a couch.
I am moving into new place and I am looking to spend ~4k on a leather sofa that will last a long time. I understand top grain, klin wood are starting points for a decent sofa (then springs etc.). Just curious what brands people suggest here and also recommend me what style of sofa (sectional? standard 3 seat with accent?)
It seems the space might be better fitted to have a 3 seater and accent? the width is about 9 feet if we are talking about people sitting and looking at the tv.
I've never bought a nicer/quality sofa, but I'm looking for a quality leather sofa now. I'm hoping to spend maybe $4,000ish (or hopefully less), but above all else, I want something that will last several years. I'd rather pay at the top of my budget (or even a little above) than pay $3,000 for a sofa that looks/feels like crap after 1 or 2 years.
There are sofas that I like at places like Restoration Hardware, Pottery Barn, West Elm, Article, Crate and Barrel, etc., but I can't really tell if these sofas will last.
All advice/suggestions on where to get (or not get) a quality leather sofa would be very much appreciated.
Thank you!
My family has had the same fabric furniture for 12 years and they have been falling apart due to all of our pets we have.
What reputable place can I go to online to look at real leather furniture that is also affordable? not the faux stuff.
We don’t have a budget yet as we don’t really know what kind of prices to expect.
That being said we hear leather, especially the real stuff is pretty good against dogs and cats, we have 4 cats and a dog.
Hey all!
I'm going in circles on my hunt for a leather couch. Brands I've looked at Ashley, Poly & Bark, Article, RH, West Elm, Century, Hooker, Hancock and Moore, Stickley, and American Leather.
We just moved and need a new couch to suit our lifestyle, it will be in a main area and I thought leather would suit best, a dog and toddler (2) so it needs to be durable. I almost bought a Stickley leather couch but realized it was too deep a couch for the space. And then decided maybe a cheaper brand would be better for the life stage I'm in with a dog and toddler so I went back to poly & bark
Any help with deciding which brands I should go with mid level or higher end? I hate buying a throw away couch; but, I also don't want to destroy a 6-10k leather couch. I'm attaching the Stickley I almost bought and the P&B sofa I'm seriously considering. MCM style. TIA
looking for a couch for my new house. i want one that i can have for life or at least more than 2 years.
i was looking at pottery barn, but i’ve read that their quality has declined in recent years.
i want something dark brown & leather, preferably tufted.
any recs help.
Hello folks!
I’m looking to find a brand or company that makes very high quality leather couches. I’m 6’4 so sizing makes this a little more complicated.
Thanks for the help!
My husband really wants a leather sofa, whereas I'm not convinced we'll take proper care of it (he promised he'd condition it...but will he really?). We have a 5 year-old, no pets (yet), and he's saying you can just wipe leather down and it'll be worth the extra £1,000 to avoid professional cleaning. This is in England, so we'll only "stick" to it a few weeks per year, but I still think cotton tweed makes more sense.
What's the professional consensus on this? If we can afford a leather upgrade, should we just do it?
Leather is so much easier to clean.
I put a throw on mine in summer and winter. So just wash that. Prevents sticking to it in summer and prevents sitting on cold leather in winter.
The better quality of leather the quicker it adapts to your body temp
I have a leather lazy boy and a leather couch. The lazy boy was nearly same price as couch and you can tell the difference in leather.
I've had both for 17 yrs and if it wasnt for the cats the couch would look new. My lazy boy still looks new. Incidentally the cats have RUINED my suede chair. It's easier for them to scratch suede and cloth than leather imo.
There are levels to this shit leather sofas in terms of the quality and thickness of leather used.
If the leather sofa you’re thinking of buying isn’t at least 2 or 3 grand then I’d be very suspicious of quality.
I've had two, leather, electric, reclining sofa sets delivered from RC Willey. The first sofa was an RC Willey house brand. It cost $2500.00 for the sofa and $ 1500 for the love seat. The recliner frames started collapsing immediately and were dragging on the ground within a month (I'm not obese if you're wondering). The second, a Flexsteel, leather, power, reclining sofa set, was delivered broken and immediately returned.
My SO and I have talked to a lot of people about this and everyone hates their reclining sofas. For example, my brother-in-law has a Lazy Boy that he's replaced the recliner frames 3 times over 7 years.
I have a no-name leather, reclining, manual power, sofa from American Furniture Warehouse that's 15 years old and still going.
Is there any decent furniture left out there? Do you have I pay $12000 to get something that doesn't break in a month?
It sucks so bad, I am looking for a decent sectional and it is impossible. There are tons of 1500-3000 ones that are all complete trash. Then there are some solid 10,000 ones that are so high on their own horse, that you have to settle for retarded design in order to have solid build. Just pretty much sucks. Seems the answer is always learn to build your own buy antique and redo it, but that doesn't work for most people's lifestyle.
Like you kinda already mentioned, recliners and the like cause issues. The fewer moving parts, the longer-lasting something will be. It makes it kind of a crapshoot. First step is to avoid recliners. If you need to lay back, consider a dedicated recliner or day bed. Better to buy two chairs that won't break than a series that will.
I have no recommendations in regards to brands. I'm cheap and mostly buy Ikea furniture (my Ikea couch is holding up remarkably well several years on) but I doubt anyone would call most Ikea furniture BIFL. And a relative supplies the rest of my family with cheap furniture from China at a discount, and they'll just use stuff until it's literally incapable of functioning, even if it degrades quickly.
What you could do is look into antique furniture. It'd be a bit of an investment, and you may need to restore or re-upholster it, but a classical couch or chair might last you a lifetime. I distinctly remember the furniture set my grandparents owned functioning after decades, and the only thing they ever did was re-upholster it every twenty years or so.

Spent all Saturday trying to find a quality modern-look leather couch for my office. Local stores didn't have what I'm looking for... so I've resorted to searching online. Hope to find one in a cigar brown though similar shades will work. The couch should be about 80" long. Here are a couple that have piqued my interest...
West Elm's Axel Leather Sofa looks sharp though i've read mixed reviews on West Elm's quality for this price range.
American Leather's Flynn Sofa is excellent, but runs about $4K-5K. Too rich for my blood.
Can r/malelivingspace recommend similar pieces in the $1K-$2.5K range?
I had been looking at the West Elm Axel also, but decided against it due to durability concerns and very poor customer service reviews.
I just ordered one from Bryght (re-branded Article in the two weeks since I've ordered).

Looks like they've stopped selling this particular model in the two weeks since I ordered, but they have a couple other leather sofas that all seem to have very positive reviews.
ekornes. Worth the money
We're tired of crappy cheap couches and furniture wearing out in 3-4 years flaking apart.
Looking for somewhere to purchase a quality leather couch or sectional (modern styling, nothing boring). Can anyone suggest an honest furniture store selling quality brands?
Restoration hardware has a bunch of stuff, but something just doesn't seem right. Much of their furniture while decent quality, some pieces seems cheap. Stickleys is a great option but their style is abit different than my taste, though I adore the build quality. Timothy Oulton seems to have great stuff, but I just don't know about their quality under the leather. They seem fashion driven and often fashion driven companies have "acceptable" quality, but not the heirloom build.
Anyone have any recs for the "saddleback" of leather couches? Tough, well built, full grain leather. Price isn't too much a concern as it's a one time purchase, and I'm willing to go the extra mile for a great piece.
Hello all!
I have been looking at different sofas for weeks and I cant figure out what I want to do. I really like the Article Sven style sofa- I would like it to be a comfortable haven to curl up in. Initially I was looking at fabric, but I've come to love the leather look. I second guess myself because of the reviews. Should I try article? Or poly & bark?? But then West elm is having a big sale this weekend on the Dennes style which looks the sven!!
Please Help... :'(

I have 3 people I know who have a Sven. The two that have the tan one love theirs and the one that has the chocolate color said hers started to look cheap and didn't really like it anymore. But I wonder if it was more of the color having to do with it. I would look at their warranty policy, too. When my husband and I were seriously looking at a West Elm couch we asked one of the managers and they couldn't tell us anything except if was damaged on arrival they would replace it. From my understanding if it started to sag in 6 months they were under no obligation to replace it. It felt weird to get such little info on a several thousand dollar purchase, so we decided not to go with them.
All of the west elm couches seem very low to me whenever I look at them.
I have the Sven chair in the lighter leather. It does scratch and stain relatively easily which Article says gives it “character.” The back cushion sags but I have a dog who likes to sleep on it. It’s very comfy.
