I wanted to subscribe to All About History magazine, went through their website and it took me to magazinesdirect (which it says is their official publisher), but after looking at their Trustpilot reviews it looks like they're a scam! I'm completely out of the loop with magazine subscriptions and don't want to waste money.

Magazines Direct aren’t a scam. They may or may not be a bit rubbish but some publishers use them to manage their subscriptions. If the magazine you want to subscribe to uses Magazines Direct then that will likely be the only way to subscribe to the physical magazine.

OP or a mod marked this as the best answer , given by u/caspararemi . I subscribe to loads (literally about 20 or 25 at this point) of magazines. Magazines Direct is fine for setting up and managing subscriptions, the problems are when you order anything eles like magazine files or folders. Three times I've ordered items, and three times I've had problems. First time I didn't bother chasing as it was a cheap magazine folder. Both the following times I did chase up and they'd keep telling me they'd been dispatched, but they'd replace them, and I'd end up getting random back issues instead. Honestly a nightmare and now I just buy generic magazine files or folders from other sites instead of their branded ones. What is this? More on reddit.com
