Sometimes I just don’t feel like reading a book and will often default to the dumbass internet and I want to just read a print magazine.
I wasnt sure which flair to use - I used to really like vice but it obviously fell off with the whole bankrupcy thing..
I use to LOVE reading magazines as a tween and teen, but I feel like we don't really see that many nowadays. Are there any magazines that you still read that you'd recommend?
I'm needing some help from the hive mind. Are magazines still a thing? lol I know they exist but are subscriptions financially reasonable anymore? What magazines do you read?
This post is inspired by me looking at my phone too much but I just don't have the brain power to read books leisurely and sporadically. For example, while cooking dinner and I have a few minutes for the pasta to boil, I need something to look at that's not a device.
I love the magazine format; however, I find that most magazines lack quality and are just articles that function as ads with picture ads in-between. That being said I would like to share two quality magazines and hope that you can suggest more, regardless of topic. I'm sure if I don't like it someone else reading this thread will.
Prospect Magazine
Foreign Affairs
I'm old-school. I love having physical magazines in the living room to read instead of doomscrolling or immediately putting on the TV whenever when I get home. I'm sure many here know what I mean.
The combined 1 year sub option (20 print + digital copies of NYRB; 4 print + digital copies of TPR; plus access to their complete archives from 1963 and 1953, respectively) seems pretty appealing. The archive alone seems like it would be incredible.
I still peruse NYRB every now and then, and of course, they publish a lot of great books.
The Paris Review I haven't read in a while, but my vague understanding is that they've dipped in quality post-Covid.
And if not, what else is worth subbing to these days?
What are some particular news outlets or magazines you have subscriptions to? It may include news and opinions like say WSJ, NYT, Bloomberg, Wired, or National Review. Or it could be a hobby related magazine like Backpackers, Bon Appetit, Runner's World, or Fine Woodworking.
It seems more likely that the older you are, the more likely you are to pay for such subscriptions. But younger folks with active recurring magazine subscriptions, please feel free to chime in.
Not newspapers.
In high school (15 years ago (._.) ) I subscribed to Game Informer. Now every once in a while I get like 3-month or 6-month subscriptions to Smithsonian Magazine or ROCKIN’ON JAPAN (Japanese rock magazine) but I don’t read them often enough for a continuous subscription.
Now that I’ve given up my full time job, I have more time but I’m less connected to larger world. What newspapers and magazines do you find helpful for staying current?
And obviously — this isn’t a political question. Let’s not go there.
This is piggy backing on the Sports Illustrated question from earlier today, but I also thought about it when I pulled my National Geographic out of the mailbox a few days ago.
I've gotten NatGeo since I was a kid, it's still a great monthly read. 4-5 long form articles every month on everything from the latest in Egyptian anthropology discoveries to climate change to the history of glass. Then a potpurri of still great photography and shorter topics. It's the best.
So, do you subscribe to any print magazines? Which? Why? Isn't getting mail sorta fun?
Curious where the followers of Sam Harris go to stay informed. Here are some of mine:
Financial Times - has fantastic high quality analysis but is fairly pricey
The Economist - again great anaylsis but some more left wing folk might be turned off by its Laissez-faire slant.
The Dispatch - Great if you want a conservative but non-Trumpist perspective on things
War on the Rocks - Great for those with an interest in national security or foreign policy
The Spectator - for those in the UK, again more conservative leaning but not Trump level insanity (bar a few columnists)
Pretty much what the title says. I understand one cannot know every topic from every angle. But if you wanted to have a fair and representative understanding of the latest and most well-presented ideas in terms of social and economic policies in neo-liberalism, libertarianism, neo-conservatism, socialist, and/or whatever you believe the be the reigning political ideologies of today, what do you think a person ought to be reading? I guess I’m wondering what y’all think are the best written/researched publications out there for their respective base that they’re writing for?
And if you can only offer some examples for your particular political/social interests feel free to provide it. Trying to get a sense of how to build a reading list that might make me relatively literate in more than my own inherently biased ways of understanding the world and thought a sub where people take the quality of their information very seriously would be a good place to start.
(And if this topic already exists somewhere feel free to virtually slap me and then point me in the right direction.)
Edit: To those who have responded with suggestions thus far, thanks! Definitely have a place to start building this kind of reading list. Looking forward to more suggestions/discussion.
For those who seem more interested in discrediting the suggestions in other posts:
1.) So what should people be reading instead?
2.) If the idea is to read exclusively the writing of those in the non-mainstream, I think there is still something to be said for understanding how the issues are being presented more broadly. For instance, bloggers who are commenting on the news are writing in response to something and I think it's helpful to know how these ideas are being shared with the public. Bloggers aren't just making this stuff up, they are responding to and commenting on the world of ideas being shared in the mainstream.
new job gives me extra spending money and i wanna get into perusing mags in my free time. old roommate used to get the new yorker but wanted some recs other than that. literary, art, fashion, whatever cool shit y'all are into lmk!!
I’m turning 33 this Summer, and after some thought about what I’d like my fiancé to gift me, I came across a tiktok about magazines we used to read in our teens. Seventeen, Elle, Teen Vogue, etc. I just loved getting physical copies in the mail when I was a teenager, so I figure it’ll be a nice way to get a little whimsy in my life lol
I’m thinking of getting a year subscription to a magazine, but I’m not sure what’s good anymore. I love great photography, especially fashion, I love a good story, and I don’t mind the horoscopes or beauty tips I think they’re fun. I like indie publications, or the “mainstream” magazines. I just want something that’s not majority advertisements, and is fun to look through and read!
I have never had a magazine subscription. But now, for some reason, I'd really like one or a few. I just don't know which to get. So I figure hearing what magazines reddit likes will give me some ideas.
For more information about my interests, I basically like what reddit likes: technology, science and sci-fi, gaming, good television and film. I'm not really into politics or straight-up news, though.
Anyway, what magazines do you guys like that you think someone with my interests should read, or could be considered good and worth reading by anyone?
I love these and I've been subscribing to them as long as I can remember. It's still a treat when I find one in the mail, and I bet you'll enjoy them, too, even though some of them aren't exactly centered around the topics you mentioned. Several of these are insanely inexpensive, as a bonus.
-
The Atlantic Monthly (Great online component as well.)
-
Discover (A little gee-whiz sometimes, but the "Vital Signs" column is great.)
-
The Economist (Essential to understanding anything.)
-
Esquire (Always interesting.)
-
Harper's (Simply the best.)
-
National Geographic (We keep this one in slipcover because it is so beautiful.)
-
The New Yorker (Not just for the cartoons. We read the articles!)
-
Rolling Stone (Still relevant even in its new format.)
-
Scientific American
-
Wired (Not what it used to be, certainly, but still good)
The New Yorker, The Economist, Newsweek, Time, Readers Digest, Consumer reports, Popular Science, The Scientific American, Golf Digest
I know it's a little old fashioned, but I recently started reading the New York Times magazine, and it's awesome. I know you can get most or all of the stuff online, but it's nice just taking a few hours away from the computer to just read. Any other magazines you guys like?
