The Country Living mills are super pricy but nice. The difference between these and lower end mills is obvious when you use them. They’re easier to turn and they can range from cracked grain to cake flour fine. I’ve heard good things about the Wondermill Jr, and they can be easily rigged to a bicycle. I haven’t used one, but they’re about half way between the lower end mills and the Country Living mills on the price scale and widely liked. I’ve got a Roots and Branches deluxe mill and the optional motor. I’m happy with it for what I paid. The motor is definitely a nice add on for regular use. If necessary I’m pretty confident I could rig it to a bicycle. It will grind flour fine enough for bread but I wouldn’t want to bake a fine cake with it. Eventually I’ll probably invest in a Country Living mill, but this one has served me well for my use and it’ll be a fine backup. Answer from Sandman0 on reddit.com

Anyone using a manual mill?
I don't have one; I researched them pretty extensively a few months ago and found that some people love them, but you better be prepared to get a good one, and then to leave it set up in place. And then to have a good workout any time you want flour. I decided it wasn't for me (though apparently you can buy kits to convert them to be attached to a stationary bike so you can power it by pedalling; intriguing, but still not for me ;) ) More on reddit.com

Hand-Powered grain and flour mills?
I've had all the ones on sale in the US except the Diamant. After using all them them for a while, my STRONG recommendation is that if you care about being able to hand-crank it, get a Country Living Grain Mill. That doesn't limit you to only hand cranking the CLGM, I electrified mine. The cheaper ones are a false economy. The Victorio Deluxe, Wondermill Jr. etc all produce really inferior flour to the CLGM and often are harder/more tiring to use as well. More on reddit.com

Do you recommend buying a grain mill for the home and if so, how difficult is it to find whole grains?
I’ve been grinding my own flour for 22 years now. Love the freshness of the flour. Here’s a list of my experience: grain lasts a LOT longer than already ground flour. freshness is unparalleled the KitchenAid Grain Mill attachment seriously sucks, avoid at all costs unless you want it for making cream of wheat (very coarse grind) my first mill was a KitchenMill, good but didn’t last as long as I thought it should’ve. second mill I got was the NutriMill Harvest Grain Mill, absolutely excellent and decently priced, watch for sales at big holidays. They seriously stand behind their products. Their customer service is outstanding. No I’m not getting paid for this, hahah. I buy grain in 25 lb bags from Amazon nowadays since grain is more scarce than it used to be in New Mexico. I buy Hard Red Spring Wheat for its higher gluten content for breads, and buy Soft White Winter Wheat for making tortillas. More on reddit.com

Best Home Grain Mills for Quality Flour – Mother Earth News
May 6, 2025 - If the primary objective is getting the flour ground and the bread on the table without any fuss, frills or fanfare, then an electric mill’s primary drawback — loss of use during power outages — may be acceptably rare. The zippiest, cleanest, easiest mills in this category are relatively inexpensive, and they do one heck of a job, then go back in the cupboard. Convertible Mills. Many mill manufacturers have devised ways to make their mills convertible from manual to electric or vice versa, so grinding continues with or without power.

The Best Grain Mills For Flour Grinding in 2024 - Extreme Wellness Supply
It seems like an obvious question, but would an electric or manual grain mill be the best format for you? If you wish to grind grains in the old fashioned manner and use a little less budget, then manual mills are ideal. If you wish to use something a little more automatic and easier to use, then electric mills are the perfect solution. Electric mills often cost more than manual mills but offer more milling textures and ultimately produce a higher quality flour.
