The Country Living mills are super pricy but nice. The difference between these and lower end mills is obvious when you use them. They’re easier to turn and they can range from cracked grain to cake flour fine. I’ve heard good things about the Wondermill Jr, and they can be easily rigged to a bicycle. I haven’t used one, but they’re about half way between the lower end mills and the Country Living mills on the price scale and widely liked. I’ve got a Roots and Branches deluxe mill and the optional motor. I’m happy with it for what I paid. The motor is definitely a nice add on for regular use. If necessary I’m pretty confident I could rig it to a bicycle. It will grind flour fine enough for bread but I wouldn’t want to bake a fine cake with it. Eventually I’ll probably invest in a Country Living mill, but this one has served me well for my use and it’ll be a fine backup. Answer from Sandman0 on reddit.com

I found the Porkert Grain Mill. In retrospect, I can say it was the best value of the inexpensive mills, selling for well under $100. It was made of cast iron, had an integral screw-type augur that could feed any type of material, and had two sets of burrs, metal and ceramic, which you could ...

Just bought wheat berries for the first time… What is the best grain mill?
Most grain mills are going to be loud i think. I have the mockmill 100. It works great and is compact. Definitely isn't quiet though. Sounds like many others have nutrimill. Not sure of the noise level on that. More on reddit.com

Do you recommend buying a grain mill for the home and if so, how difficult is it to find whole grains?
I’ve been grinding my own flour for 22 years now. Love the freshness of the flour. Here’s a list of my experience: grain lasts a LOT longer than already ground flour. freshness is unparalleled the KitchenAid Grain Mill attachment seriously sucks, avoid at all costs unless you want it for making cream of wheat (very coarse grind) my first mill was a KitchenMill, good but didn’t last as long as I thought it should’ve. second mill I got was the NutriMill Harvest Grain Mill, absolutely excellent and decently priced, watch for sales at big holidays. They seriously stand behind their products. Their customer service is outstanding. No I’m not getting paid for this, hahah. I buy grain in 25 lb bags from Amazon nowadays since grain is more scarce than it used to be in New Mexico. I buy Hard Red Spring Wheat for its higher gluten content for breads, and buy Soft White Winter Wheat for making tortillas. More on reddit.com

Home Grain Mill Recommendations
My wife has been baking bread almost daily for the past five years or so and wants a home grain mill for Christmas. It's pricey ($800 USD), but the Mockmill 200 Pro has a 12-year residential warranty: https://breadtopia.com/store/mockmill-professional-200-grain-mill/ More info: https://www.reddit.com/r/HomeMilledFlour/comments/1839rn3/comment/kaowlmd/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3 I've had mine for 3 years. I mostly do wheat flour, cornmeal, and rice flour with it. The mega-long warranty & improved internal hardware components will cover me for nearly the next decade of baking. My typical process is: Mill the flour (then either use it whole, sifted, or as a percentage with AP flour) Use the sourdough starter Use the overnight no-knead procedure Fresh bread every day for less than 10 minute's worth of effort to mill the flour, feed the sourdough starter, and create & bake the dough! "... would it work to use one of those grinders that clip onto the edge of your table and that have a hand crank to grind wheat berries?" Yes, but one of those that actually makes _flour_ (such as the Wondermill Jr. Deluxe) is going to cost as much as the lesser-expensive electric ones: $250. Anything cheaper than that price is going to merely make cracked grain, not _flour_.
