I’ve recently picked up a 14700k and I’m wondering which motherboards are the way to go, or rather, which ones to avoid. Eyeing off the Z790 chipset.
Budget is $500 AUD, but would prefer not to spend any more than I have to.

I picked up the Asus Rog Z690 hero for my I7-14700K. Mainly because it was on sale and a lot cheaper than the Z790 counterpart. And i'm running with G.Skill Ripjaws S5 6400mhz CL32 32gb kit.It's running perfectly fine and stable.

There's many, many options. You don't have to stick to Asus, they just have good branding, but really any of the big makers are typically good: Asrock, MSI, Gigabyte, Asus. For Intel i7 I would probably avoid the cheapest boards, especially the Asrock ones, they skimp on VRM which is needed to get max performance from the CPU. So look for any ATX Z690/Z790 boards above like 200 dollars. Just for some examples: Z790 Tomahawk from MSI, Z790 Aorus Elite from Gigabyte, Z790 TUF Gaming from Asus, Z790 Steel Legend from Asrock. I’m thinking a board that is z790. But interested in the opinions on the best overall value price wise vs features that are out there. I’m migrating from a 6th gen i7 laptop with a mobile 1070gtx gpu. I can’t afford the whole setup atm but want to snag the 14th gen motherboard and gpu and a 13th or 12th gen cpu during the Black Friday sales. I’ll grab the gpu later or something super cheap like a 3060 in the interim. I figure getting the 14th gen capable mobo that is backward compatible with the 12th and 13th gen cpus will give me the best upgrade path capable build.

Personally I like the ASRock Z690 & Z790 Steel Legend WiFi's. For DDR4 the Z690 is great (I have two) and for DDR5 the Z790 has had no issues (I have one). Micro Center should have great combo deals if you live near one.

There are tons of choices out there. I personally bought the same CPU and a Gigabyte Z790 Aorus Elite AX and G-Skill 2x32. Works like a charm and have a lot of I/O: 4 M.2, 6 SATA, 4 USB 2, 5 USB 3.2, one can be used to update bios without having the PC on, one USB C, DP, HDMI and 2.5G Ethernet. It also have heat sinks over M.2 and VRM... Don't forget to update your bios. You have to do it step by step and not go all the way to the latest update. Also check your case size. And it only costs $190.
