Edit: sorry, I should have added question-mark to that title. This should be a life habit, in fact.
Mods please feel free to torpedo this post if it's simply in the wrong place, but I ask here because 1.) I value the taste and sensibilities (various) of participants of this cult sub; and 2.) I end up subscribing to Netflix (in USA) less than once a year on average because I end up being so miserable with the selection....maybe my own fault. I privilege watching things I haven't seen before but am fine with rewatches of excellent movies, and I am open to (but do not generally like) series/shows....and even so, I feel like I can barely find enough really interesting stuff to make a month's sub worth my time...and even then I feel like I am stuffing myself with junk. Not my experience at CC....even during a "bad" month.
I have reason to believe I am just missing some things out of poor searching or ignorance (e.g. missed NF's Youssef Chahine collection, though that doesn't matter now with CC flexing).
I am interested in seeing a couple recentish Larrains (EL CONTE & MARIA); THE KILLER (Fincher); HIT MAN (Linklater); ATHENA; BLONDE (Dominik); CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND (weird memory of Jonathan Rosenbaum liking this, could I be hallucinating); HIS THREE DAUGHTERS (A. Jacobs); MAY DECEMBER (Haynes); INTO THE INFERNO (Herzog); maybe continuing BOJACK HORSEMAN and trying VENTURE BROTHERS for the first time (I am no fun).
I try to make use of the "best movies on NF" kinds of listicles from NYT and wherever, but for whatever reason the selections seem uninspiring. At least newer things. Older things I've seen before look worthy of seeing again but even then, often not what I am in the mood to see again, when I could just call up CC and see or re-see something more interesting.
Apologies for verbose post.
Is anyone else surprised by the quality of Netflix’s movies this year? I thought Hit Man, Woman of the Hour, and Rebel Ridge are all better than most films that go straight to streaming.
