I have a budget of $15,000 but I really want a car that’s very fuel efficient because my friends are always complaining about how much money they spend on gas. What is a list of cars that fit this bill? Thanks for any help.

*meant fuel efficient, not high mileage… I am not a car person :(

I’m leaving for college in about a month, and need something that won’t cost me an arm and a leg to drive the 200 mi between my campus and my hometown.

  • Not picky about looks, would prefer something recent enough to have bluetooth.

  • Aiming for 10-15k but I’ve got some wiggle room

  • Big enough to handle hauling dorm crap

I previously drove a 2009 Acura MDX and put 195k on it before it started having issues. My dad is a car guy and (for some reason) recommends the 2014 Chevy Volt- LOL. My campus doesn’t have charging stations and the tank on it is only 9 gal. Would love some recommendations!

July 19, 2022 -

Hey everyone, I'm buying a car for the first time since 2015, and I could use some help. My new job means I'll be commuting 45 minutes each way, mostly on the highway. I live in New England, and I need to buy this car by September 1. The commute will put 15K miles on the car per year, plus trips.

I'm looking for 1) 40+ MPG on the highway and 2) reliability. I would love manual transmission, but wouldn't prioritize it over the other two criteria. I know it's going to be a balance between the age of the car, the mileage, and the individual car history, but...

What are some make/model/year recommendations? Questions I should ask when I'm looking at used cars? Any other thoughts? Thanks!!

My budget: $10K would be great, but I could do up to $15K for a car that got excellent MPG or was a lot newer/lower mileage than the others. (I also posted a related question on r/usedcars.)

Of course I know that the best bet for gas mileage and reliability is Corolla, Civic, or Camry, but I want something a bit cooler or sportier. The Honda Fit comes to mind (add some light tasteful mods), but what about you?

-- Edit

This car will be my DD. My current daily is a 97 4Runner that gets terrible gas mileage lol and my wife drives our civic.

If I privilege reliability, practicality and price, what’s the best used car for me under $15k?

Practical: It goes from point A to point B in a city without breaking down. No frills, no extras needed. An appliance.

This is also assuming I live in one of the most expensive car markets in the US (where a 10-year-old Corolla costs at least $10k).

Thanks

Hey all, I’m a home healthcare provider so I put in a lot of seat time. I’m looking for a new workmobile and want to spend around 15k. As stated in the title I’m looking for something reliable first and foremost, then something that gets good mileage. I’d like something comfortable for 100+mi per day, leather and heated seats would be ideal, also some noise damping and not a tin box. Apple CarPlay or the ability to easily retrofit a unit with CarPlay would be a big plus as I rely on Apple Maps heavily throughout my day. Whatever I get doesn’t need to be fast but I do a fair amount of accelerating up to highway speeds so it needs to be fast enough to get out of its own way. 4 doors is a must, I’m open to sedan or wagon/hatch. I live in the Midwest so it must be FWD, if there’s enough snow where AWD would be required I’ll just drive my truck those days. Let’s see what ya got!! Thanks!

Wondering what might be in my price range of under $15k for a SUV (compact preferred), less than 150k miles, with at least 30 mpg highway miles and has to be super comfortable (probably top trims only). I love the Honda CRVs but they have terrible years and the better years are vastly out of my price range.

I currently have a 2015 Yaris and I hate it. The seats are horribly uncomfortable, the layout of the seat is the worst - unless you have short legs and long arms (seriously wtf?!), and the handling is downright shameful. Really surprised that toyota made SUCH a clunker!!

My dream car is the 2019 honda crv exl or touring, but I just can't afford it. Maybe one day. I usually love hondas in general because the handling is tight, the cars are durable (with exception of certain years/models) and their tech package is usually better than anyone else by 5 years.

I'm 5'7" 140 lbs with long legs and shorter (normal) arms, and I have RA so comfort is a must. My yaris literally HURTS me to drive. My shoulders, elbows, wrists and fingers yell at me for days if I drive my yaris more than 40 minutes (hwy).

There are soooo many suvs on the market, and most of them just have terrible durability, are just so unbelievably uncomfortable, have terrible mpg or just simply are out of my price range. HELP! Please! Where is a "car finder" app?!? Someone invent this asap!
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

September 15, 2025 -

Hey guys, I could really use some guidance here. I’m a 23 y/o girl, not super experienced with cars, and I’m trying to pick my first “serious” used car. Budget is around $15,000 and I just want something that’s reliable, not a headache with repairs, and ideally decent on gas.

I don’t really care if it’s a sedan, hatchback or small SUV, but I’d like something that feels safe and won’t leave me stranded. I’ve heard mixed things about Hondas vs Toyotas vs Mazdas. Some people also told me to look into Hyundai/Kia but others say their engines can be hit or miss.

Mainly I’ll use it for commuting to work, weekend trips, maybe some light road trips. Nothing crazy.

What would you guys recommend? Any specific years/models I should be hunting for (or avoiding) in this price range?

Thanks in advance 🙏

I'm currently looking for a reliable car under $15k with good mpg, low repair/maintenance costs and an automatic transmission. As a side note, right now I'm living in Costa Rica so cars are automatically gonna be about 40% (perhaps even more) pricier than in the US. Despite this, I'm still open to any recommendations and appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance!

I recently got a job that will require a lot of driving (possibly 2 gas refills per week). I currently have a gas-guzzling truck that won't cut it. Looking for a smaller sedan with lower miles, automatic, reliable, good mpg, 4 door, 4 cylinder, and a good hands-free phone connectivity system all under 15k. I'll mostly be driving on flat highways and smaller city streets in Texas. Thank you for your time and suggestions!

I was initially looking at 2019-2020 Toyota Corolla LEs with 75k miles on them for around $14,900. Or possibly 2019-2020 Honda Civics with 60k miles on them for around $14,800.

But now I am questioning this. Would it be smarter to buy an older car with less mileage on it for cheaper? Some say the lower the mileage with Corolla's the better because year doesn't matter.

Or should I look into different types of cars?

My goal is to get the best deal with my money. I need a car that has great longevity and reliability because I'll put a lot of miles on it fast.

Any advice is helpful, this will be my first car purchase.

For $15k out the door from dealer you'll be looking around 70k - 100k miles on most cars depending on year, make, model. Personally I like these because they have traditional automatic transmissions: 2014-2016+ Mazda3 hatchback or CX-5 2010+ Toyota RAV4 Avoid Hyundai and Kia for the most part. Honda's are pretty good but personally I prefer Toyota and Mazda.

Honda Civics are a good choice. I recently came to absolutely love them. (I know I'm a little old to be a fanboy). Many of the older ones are just amazing on longevity and super low cost to own and cost per mile. They hold their value well so you may pay a little more when getting it but i have always found that pays for itself by having great trade in/trade up value. (my local dealer actually has my daughters 2012 civic (and several other models/years) listed on the "Extremely Desirable" trades markerboard list for the salesmen there. I saw this when wandering around waiting for an oil change). Note: In my opinion, Lower mileage is worth more than newer model year. By a lot. Older cars are often a bit of a pain for plastic and rubber bits degrading and breaking over time. But that won't break you. Slack or broken timing chains, failed transmissions, blown turbos, Blown head gaskets and other common high milage repairs will break you. It doesn't help you much that your car is 5 years newer when the high milage $6000 repair bill comes due. Give me a radiator hose or vacuum hose leak any time! You should be able to get a decent low milage civic for that price. Get one properly inspected from a reputable Honda dealership if you can. Don't get a turbo model unless you get, or it comes with a real Honda Care warranty from the dealer or a Honda Certified pre-owned. (some exceptions may apply for proven reliable models but beware). Lastly, as a sports and performance car guy for my whole life (plus a couple trucks), the civic is shockingly fun to drive (and its not even a sport model, just base). It scoots very well, handles curvy roads like an absolute champ, gets great milage and is probably the most problem free car I ever had. Even though it's a small car, I have no problem fitting comfortably in it, front or back. (I'm a pretty big guy). I even like the heater (the small motor heats up fast and I literally have defroster working before I get out of the parking lot). There's a reason it's one of the best selling cars in the world for all time, I now realize. I never really had any respect for the civic till I got one (except for the Type R stuff and maybe the SI's.). I always loved the accord's. Thar's also 15 million of them floating around in the US as of today so there's plenty to choose from. As a guy who had loved Porsche's, Beamers, Audi's, VW Scirocco's and GTI's and all the great small/medium sports cars of my days, all the way back to MG's and Austin Heelys, I just mostly have to say that the part that surprised me most is that I actually love driving this thing, every single time. Happy Shopping. Don't get the first thing you see that she likes! Make sure she sees the entire menu before deciding!

r/UsedCars on Reddit: Need Help Suggesting Cars $15K Budget, Mostly for College & Work
December 30, 2025 -

Hey everyone, I’m looking for some car suggestions! My budget is $15,000 and I’ll mainly be using the car for college and commuting to work. My parents really like Toyota and Lexus because of their reliability, but most of the listings I find on Cars.com, Carfax, and Facebook Marketplace are either rebuilt title cars or very high mileage. When there is a clean Toyota/Lexus that fits what they want, it’s usually over my budget.I want a car that can last me at least 10 years, be reliable, and won’t break the bank on maintenance.

Some questions I have: • What Toyota/Lexus models should I be looking for around this price range? • Are there other brands that hold up long-term and are worth considering? • Should I avoid certain cars even if they’re cheap? • Any recommended model years or features to focus on?

Appreciate all suggestions and advice! Thanks in advance!

I'm looking for a car under $15k that is reliable with high mpg. I've been looking at Ford focuses in my area at this price range and many have less than 50k miles for this price. Would a Focus be considered reliable by any means? I'm a broke college student and need something I can drive my daughter around in too. My Escape I'm driving has more issues than I can count on all my fingers and toes and my only option is put more money into the Escape or just get another vehicle.
