r/musichoarder on Reddit: Best music player?

'm looking for a basic music player for PC- something with a good queue system like Musicolet and easy playlist management. Right now, I use Foobar, but maybe due to my customizations, I can't properly set up queues, and most resources I've found about it are over 10 years old.

I don't want to use Plex since I'm not interested in paying for a license. I did try Jellyfin, but also want to have an offline copy of my library on my phone. Unfortunately, the player I used with Jellyfin behaved strangely-it felt like it was made primarily for streaming, and downloading was more of an afterthought.

Right now, I've just set up an FTP server on my phone, copy files from my PC, and use Musicolet which works for now because my collection is pretty small (30 GB MP3s 320/kb). Maybe there's a better way to use Jellyfin for offline playback, or perhaps I should just use two different players on my devices. I do like Musicolet, but I haven't found a good player for PC yet

I have never seen such conflicting studies. Some say Groove is better cuz its newer, less bugs, and will be updated more frequently. Others say VLC is still king as it can run more format and even some corrupted formats to some degree. Some sources says there is no difference and other say we have to look at the codex or something.

Should there be a more concert answer to this, we are dealing with 1s and 0s after all how can their be so many conflicting opinions on quality. I mainly want to focus on audio quality so if someone can help me navigate this mess that would be great.

Over the next 1-2 months I want to use lots of different music players for the sole purpose of finding the 'best' ones. If you have any suggestions, especially ones I don't have already, please comment them. Looking for music players (so .mp3 and .flac players). In a while, I will report back with details on each app.

FOSS is not a requirement, but being free is.

Apps currently on the list:

  • antiiq

  • audit

  • audyn

  • FiiO

  • GoneMAD

  • Lark

  • mixtube

  • mi music

  • music beats

  • musicolet (current main player)

  • muzio

  • oto

  • phocid

  • pi player

  • an app just called 'player'

  • poweramp (another current favourite) - crossed out because it is paid, and I didn't realise I was on the trial.

  • pulsar

  • retro music

  • Spotify (local files section only)

  • symfonium (paid)

  • VLC

Added:

  • AIMP

  • Auxio

  • Blackplayer

  • Booming Music

  • cloudplayer

  • foobar2000

  • harmonoid

  • hiby

  • LAP

  • mediamonkey

  • Namida

  • Nyx

  • phonograph

  • Player Pro

  • retropod

  • salt

  • shuttle 2

r/androidapps on Reddit: What are some of the BEST (by "best" I mean practically flawless) paid/open source music players for Android?

Life's been rough since my all time favorite music player app BlackPlayer EX Became officially broken and unfixable in the past few months.

So far After trying out all of the top options from the play store I have only found two that I like and neither of them are perfect: Oto Music+ & Musicolet.

Oto is damn you're perfect other than the way it's queue behaves...

Musicolet is fine Pin functions pretty well but I personally don't like the interface, I find it to be cluttered and even though the app is straightforward/simple I find using it to be tedious.

Do y'all have any suggestions for me?

(Please don't suggest Poweramp or Pulsar Pro; the former has way too much going on for me personally and the latter - to put it simply - is overrated and has an Inherently flawed interface IMO)

Really only looking for paid or open source apps here... Reason for that being the Google play store is riddled with terrible music players that have “mp3“ Or something similar in the title.

r/DigitalAudioPlayer on Reddit: Android Music Player App Recommendations
April 18, 2025 -

I have a FiiO JM21 and a Fii0M7(that I absolutely despise but that's for another post). I'm looking for music player recommendations for local music library. I am not a fan of the FiiO music player that is built in and I've been searching this sub for a while and most if not all posts are on the unit recommendations themselves and not just on the players.
What is everyone using and WHY?
What made you land on/stay with that player you're using? Again, I'm not talking the DAP itself but the app you use to listen to your local library.

TIA!

I love my iPhone 15 standard but listening to music with my AirPods 4 something just tends to fall short in terms of audio quality or depth

I’m not a huge audiophile but I can still tell that the audio feels flat and boring. I like having dedicated systems for certain tasks such as my 3ds and psp for portable gaming since my phone isn’t great at it

I was curious if I should get a high quality dedicated portable music player for better music listening on the go, if so are there specific recommendations?

What ap do you use to listen to your music library on your android phone? I'm looking for something simple that can play a wide variety of files. I don't need a bunch of extra fluff features, just to be able to access my full library.

IDK if this is a good subreddit to ask this, but I figured pirates are fellow people who don't rely on streaming and have the same wide variety of file types. Thanks

I'm trying to find an mp3 player or digital audio player that can play music and maybe podcasts. I saw some have an fm radio which is cool but not a requirement.

Well, how deep into the rabbit hole do you want to jump? The simplest solution is just use your current dumbphone for music. If it has no headphone jack buy a $10 CX9399 dongle off AliExpress. If you're using an ancient dumbphone - depending on budget get a cheap used Android phone or a dedicated DAP (see below). Any MP3 player below $100 (basically anything you can buy off Amazon or AliExpress at that price) will use some horribly cheap circuitry and likely sound worse than your current dumbphone. Cheap used MP3 players have the same problem, they don't sound better than your dumbphone. Battery degradation also becomes an issue at that point. And most older MP3 players use proprietary cables for charging and data transfer. iPods have the same problems - the newest 'dumb' iPod is closer to a decade old and batteries are generally degraded. They also use a different charging cable than your dumbphone and using iTunes to sync music instead of dragging and dropping is painfully annoying. This leaves us with modern DAPs (Digital Audio Player), which is just a fancy MP3 player but with better audio circuitry. Higher-end ones tend to run Android. If you just want to play downloaded music offline, then just go for something basic like the Fiio M5, Hiby R2 II, or Hidizs AP80 Pro, which all have dedicated DAC chips, USB-C charging, and decent battery life in a compact body. They should cost around $100 USD. If you want to stream music, just buy a used smartphone, preferably one with decent audio hardware like certain LG G-series (G7 & G8) or V-series (V20-V60) phones which can be had for as cheap as $40 in working condition. Without being overly technical, audio quality from music streaming is low-quality enough that any modern smartphone (anything made within the last 10 years) will output decent enough sound. The bottleneck is always your headphones until you reach the ~$500 range or so. If you know anything beyond this you don't need my help. The aforementioned LG phones actually have the same DAC (ESS 9218) found in those DAPs above, except the LG phones are even cheaper and vastly more versatile. If for whatever reason you want to spend $300+ and abhor the idea of a smartphone then you could probably decent DAP running Android. The only worthwhile option at the $300 range is probably the Fiio M11S, which runs on Android 10 and has good battery life and a DAC chip from an established company (ESS or AKM typically). Most other options (new or used) at this price range have either no dedicated audio hardware (Sony NW-A306, Hiby M300), or run terribly outdated versions of Android (Fiio M11, Shanling M3X, Hiby R5) meaning streaming apps will probably drop support for that old Android version sooner rather than later. Note that these Android DAPs are basically Android tablets but in (thick) smartphone form factor, so take that for what you will. Anyways hope this helped.

I use an iPod video 5.5. Probably the best music player out there! Plus you can find refurbished ones for cheap on eBay. Bought mine for about $60
