Check out Oldboy (2003), Perfect Blue (1997), eXistenZ (1999), I Saw the Devil (2010), Charade (1963) Edit: Also watch Hitchcock films. He is not called master of suspense for no reason. Answer from ashbat1994 on reddit.com

August 6, 2017 -

I love suspenseful movies where I am on the edge of my seat. I like mind bending movies too where I think about the movie even after it's over. I want to see some more mysteries too, since during the movie you can try to put the clues together and figure out what's going on. Just so you know what kind of movies I've watched, here is a list:

Inception, Shutter Island, Interstellar, The Prestige, The Departed, The Game, The Gift, Memento, Enemy, Prisoners, Arrival, Annihilation, Gone Girl, Moon, Source Code, Zodiac, Nightcrawler, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, LA Confidential, Predestination, Seven, Fight Club, Green Room, Coherence, The Invitation, Triangle, No Country for Old Men, Whiplash, Gone Baby Gone, Buried, 10 Cloverfield Lane, Wind River, Blue Ruin, Resolution, and The Endless.

I know that's a huge list, but if you guys could just take a quick glance at it and see what my cup of tea is, maybe you can help me. If it helps, I like directors like Christopher Nolan, David Fincher, Denis Villeneuve, and Martin Scorsese. Leave me suggestions, thanks!

May 14, 2025 - If you watched Oldboy, you should watch the rest of Park's Vengeance series. "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance"(2002) is the first movie, and "Lady Vengeance"(2005) comes after.

I love watching mystery. I have watched some and I want to see some more but there's only one condition- "It shouldn't be a slow burner (unless it's really really good)" . Language isn't the problem as long as it's good.

I have already seen some famous ones which I really liked Gone girl, memories of murder, 12 angry man, Silence of the lambs, Zodiac, seven, I saw the devil, primal fear, the usual suspect, the invisible guest etc.

In shows I have already watched Dexter, and then there were none, Mouse, True detective, The wire, the blacklist, flower of evil, The mentalist etc.

I want something where the protagonist and antagonists are equally smart and cunning. Please suggest me some good ones. If it's a good murder mystery then it would be best.

P.S. - You can suggest me some anime too if any fight the criteria.

I watched Gone Girl a few years ago out of boredom since it wasn't on my radar at all, and since then I've been on a long, mystery movie binge.

So far I've watched based off of browsing this subreddit;

**Memories of Murders

Mother (the Korean one)

Parasite

Chaser (didn't like this one)

I Saw The Devil (nor this one)

Old boy

Sympathy for Mr/Miss Vengeance

Black Coal Thin Ice (this was terrible)

Cure

The Invisible Guest

The Body (2012)

Zodiac

Prisoners

Sicario

Arrival

Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (Fincher version)

Silence of the Lambs

Gone Baby Gone

Mystic River

Dragged Through Concrete

Wind River

L.A Confidential (this gets rave reviews but I just didn't like it)

Nocturnal Animals (same comments as above)

Usual Suspects**

More movies I've seen that I've forgotten to add to my list

Memento

Se7en

Lucky Number Slevin

Shutter Island

The Secret in Their Eyes

True Detective (season 1 is the best TV experience I've had)

I need my suspense/mystery fix, any more recommendation?

Hello,

I am currently doing a ton of data cleaning (that will take days) and and a a result, I am watching mystery films in the background (as the current theme). While I have seen plenty of classics, I was hoping if anyone can recommend some good modern mystery films (1970s and up). Some of my favourite modern mystery films are:

  1. Brick

  2. Mystic River

  3. Changeling

  4. Zodiac

  5. Seven

  6. The Usual Suspects

  7. Chinatown

  8. Blade Runner

  9. Dark City

  10. Prisoners

  11. Identity

Thank you!

My partner and I just watched Trap (2024) and we were so disappointed 😪

So now we're looking for movies to watch in a similar genre and that's ACTUALLY GOOD.

Any (Pyschological) Thrillers/Mystery/Crime movie recommendations would do but hopefully, of course.... well-written....

TIA.

Nightcrawler (2014) - starts off slow but builds the tension massively to one of the most edge-of-your-seat climaxes I’ve seen. Uncut Gems (2019) - famously anxiety inducing. The whole vibe of the film is unlike anything else out there, with a unique premise, brilliant acting and it’s equally as funny as it is tense. If you like this try Good Time (2017) from the same directors (Safdie brothers), which is another great crime thriller with superb pacing. Blow Out (1981) - one of Brian De Palma’s Hitchock-inspired thrillers. Bombed on release and these days nobody understands why. Interesting story mixing politics and movie-making and is overall an incredibly engaging mystery with an exceptionally bleak ending. Also Quentin Tarantino’s favourite movie. Marathon Man (1976) - whilst this is a pretty famous one it also seems kind of slept on nowadays. Unbelievably well directed with a wildly unpredictable plot, and a great central performance from Dustin Hoffman. Michael Clayton (2007) - incredibly taught legal thriller that does not waste a second of its screen time. This is a very grown up film that really respects its audience and demands your attention throughout. Easily George Clooney’s best performance. Witness (1985) - very 80s in its delivery and overall tone. It’s a rather odd premise for a film being a crime thriller set within the Amish community, but it’s another that uses its concept and screen time to its absolute maximum potential. Blood Simple (1984) - Coen Brothers’ debut. Even from their first effort, the Coens’ signature style is all over this one - rural landscape, idiosyncratic dialogue, dark humour and extreme violence. Another 80s classic that will have you hooked until the final scene. The Secret in Their Eyes (2009) - Argentinian film, another legal thriller. You will literally never guess what happens in this film. It was a pretty big hit at the time and won an Oscar, but I don’t hear it talked about much now. Completely perfect.

I like watching movies without knowing anything about it. These movies were intense and had me guessing what will happen next. I rate each of these a 10/10.

Would appreciate any recommendations

r/MovieSuggestions on Reddit: Looking for Great Recent Thriller / Mystery / Espionage / Action / Fast-Paced Movies – Any Recommendations?
July 20, 2025 -

Hey everyone,

I’m looking for some really solid recent movies (ideally from 2020 onwards) in the thriller, mystery, espionage, action, or fast-paced genres. I’m in the mood for gripping films with smart plots, psychological twists, tense action, or high-stakes espionage. Whether it’s a slow-burn thriller or something more adrenaline-fueled, Preferably fast paced but I’m open to both — as long as it’s well-crafted and keeps me hooked from start to finish.

I especially love movies with strong suspense, sharp pacing, and stories that keep you guessing. Bonus points if it’s something a little underrated or off the mainstream radar.

For reference, here are a few movies I’ve really enjoyed in this space: • Prisoners • The Night House • Wind River • Gone Girl • The Invisible Man (2020) • Sicario • Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy • Zero Dark Thirty • No Time to Die

Also open to international films if they bring strong suspense, action, or intrigue.

What are some of the best recent movies you’ve seen in these genres? Would love to hear your recommendations — thanks in advance!

It could really be any genre as long as mystery and thriller is involved. Id also like to say my favorite settings when it comes to these stories are somewhere in space, in a military setting or underwater (I’ve never been huge on the idea of normal underwater shark types of stuff, if possible I’d like some sort of Atlantis type thing or where they explore a structure or a ship underwater) could be horror or not it doesn’t matter as long as it’s thrilling. I’ve never been a big movie guy so the only mystery thriller movies ive watched that I can think of are Pandorum, Seven, bone tomahawk and the abyss and I loved pandorum a lot

Edit: forgot to say that it does NOT have to be specifically underwater or space movies in open to anything

Hey fellow movie lovers! I’m in the mood for a mind-blowing suspense thriller — the kind that keeps you guessing, makes your jaw drop, and sticks with you for days. I’m talking about movies like Prisoners, Se7en, Gone Girl, or The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo — anything that blends mystery, intensity, and atmosphere. I love plot twists, dark tones, and characters pushed to the edge. I’m okay with slow burns too, as long as the payoff is worth it.

So what’s your all-time favorite suspense thriller that you think everyone needs to watch at least once? It can be a hidden gem, a foreign film, or even something recent that flew under the radar. Bonus points if it left you staring at the screen in stunned silence during the credits. Would love to hear your top picks!

I’m in the mood for a gripping suspense or psychological thriller — something with a strong build-up and a twist that completely catches you off guard.

I’m open to international films too, as long as they have English subtitles.

I have access to Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+ Hotstar, so suggestions available on any of these platforms would be perfect.

Looking for underrated picks, hidden gems, or anything that left you thinking about it long after it ended.

Thanks in advance!
