r/Twitch on Reddit: Best microphone to cancel loud background noise - dual setup
June 29, 2023 -

I share an office room with my boyfriend and I'd like to know the best microphone to cancel out loud background noise. Our desks are around 3 feet apart. It gets very distracting in discord calls since he yells a lot in game and it picks up as double. I currently have the Elgato Wave 3, but it's not good at all at canceling out background noise.

This is a really tough situation and one I share with my wife, who is sitting four-ish feet away from me. Here are the things I did to reduce my voice on her end: Get a Dynamic Microphone and mount it to your desk using a boom arm so that the speaking side (usually the top) is pointing to you and away from your BF. I bought her the Tonor TD510 USB/XLR Mic and it is SURPRISINGLY good for the $60 price point. 1b) Make sure the microphone is close to you, and with close I mean for a Dynamic Microphone you should be able to practically kiss it (4-6 inches) and for a condenser mic (which you have now) you should have it about 8-10 inches away at the most. Closer is better. 1c) With your microphone so close you are probably a LOT louder, So turn your Gain (the knob on the Wave or the buttons on the Tonor) right down until your normal streaming voice hits the top of the green or right in the yellow. (-15 to 10dB) 2) In OBS it is time to set up some filters, starting with Noise Suppression. Pick the filter you think works best - I prefer RNN Noise over RTX for example - such that your voice stays clear and unmuddied while removing as much noise from your BF as possible. 3) After noise suppression, get your BF to play a game and be loud about it. Look at what levels on your microphone he hits. If this is -45dB or lower this is great, because that means that you -should- be able to top that with your own voice. 3b) Speak as loud as you normally do into your mic, then pretend you have a little intimate moment with your viewers and give them a whisper. Check what the lowest is you get while you whisper. If that is under -20dB you may want to add a little Gain filter and just up it 3-5dB, but make sure it is below your Noise Suppression. Suppress first, then add gain. 3c) If that is well clear of your BF then you -could- add a Noise Gate on top of the noise suppression to just remove your BF entirely -unless- you are speaking too. 4) Now it is time to test your highs: Talk as if you are normally streaming - and really check the dB on this one - , then get excited, get scared, scream for a bit. It will probably be WAY too loud (peaking or high reds). Now we are going to add a compression filter. Set the ratio to 4:1 and set the attentuation to 3-5dB under your normal speaking voice dB. 4b) Now speak again at your normal volume and use the make-up gain slider to -just- hit the yellow if you need to. Just make sure not to push it too far (don't add anything more than 6dB). 5) Add one last filter: A Limiter. Set it to -3dB. This will cut you off completely if you are about to peak. It is a really good idea to have because it is great for your viewers if you don't make their ears bleed. And that's it. Give it another test: Whisper, Talk, Scream. You should never hit below -20dB while whispering and never clip (fill the whole dB bar) when screaming. If you have any questions, feel free to drop them below.

No matter which microphone you use the filters are going to be key like others have said. But I'm not aware of any microphone or filter it's going to eliminate a screaming person that sits very close to you.

Lots of people have noise cancelling headphone that use active noise cancelling to cancel out noise going into the headphone. My issue is that I need noise cancelling headset that cancels and isolate out noise in the background for the microphone. I sometimes have to drop off the kids at the school at the same time there is a phone meeting. I like some way to filter out the background noise from say a front of the school.

I like that noise cancelling is good at filtering out droning noise like a vacuum cleaner, but what about other noises? Does anyone have suggestion of a headset? I am thinking something like a Jabra Evolve 75 for example based on my research. What do you think? If I am going to blow a lot of money on a product, I like to know that it works.

Update

Thank you everyone for their response.

  • I was mostly talking about noise isolation for the MIC.

  • I did some research and it appears that a Poly Voyager Focus seems the best between Jabra evolve 75, Logitech Zone, and EPOS Adapt 360.

  • I decided to go with a more office focus version of headset since they come with some sort of dongle that integrates with MS Team. I don't need this feature at the moment, but I was told that we may use Team in the future.

I will let everyone know about the results.

Update 2

I used the Poly Voyager Focus for a few days. It comes with a bluetooth dongle that you plug into the laptop and can pair up with both computer and your cell phone. So far the Mic seems to work pretty well in isolation. I experimented by calling my wife to see if she can hear me walking next to a loud kitchen fan or some movie playing in the background. She indicated that she can barely hear the background noise.

Noise isolation on the earphone is not as good mostly because it does not enclose the entire ear. However, I don't need noise isolation for hearing.

Hello everyone!
I've been working from home for more than 5 years, and soon I'll be transitioning to spending a significant amount of time working from coffee shops. As a remote Customer Support professional, I have over 100 calls per day with prospects. I'm in search of high-quality headphones that can effectively block out background noise. It's crucial that when I'm on a call, the prospect hears only my voice and not the ambient noise from the coffee shop, such as music and chatter.

Currently considering options like the Adapt 20, Jabra Evolve2 65 Flex, and Sennheiser Momentum 4, but I'm open to more recommendations. Thanks

June 6, 2018 -

I'm currently using a Logitech H390 Headset for my channel, but the audio quality just isn't quite there. My choice for this headset was its cheap price AND noise cancellation. Every once in a while I still see it on sale for at low as $15.

Thing is, I live near an air force base, in a high crime area, and both my PC and the A/C/Heating also isn't the quietest in the world. I often get woken up by jet planes, helicopters, and the like. Luckily, my current headset has been awesome at stopping those noises from making it into my recordings. However, it has not been good at stopping certain words from sounding just a tad distorted, and the range just isn't 100% there.

But, I'd like to make an upgrade here in the next few weeks. If possible, I would not want to spend any more than $60 on a mic. I only ask that it be USB, have better quality than I have now, and offer the noise cancellation I need.

Edit: For clarity, the recommendation is still for a dedicated mic, it does not have to be a headset. I also have my own tripod already.

Hi all- looking for a call center corded mic/headset combo with active or passive NC on both the mic and the headset.

I've got a bunch of passive noise-cancelling mic headsets (Plantronics blackwire c3220)- and while the mic does a good job of killing background noise, the earphones do very little so it becomes distracting when other people in the office at speaking.

Looking to see some options where the headphones will also help drown out outside noise- happy to view all types of options, but one thing i do like and do not mind is the passive noise cancelling with my current headset.

UPDATE: ended up just getting the poly/plantronics voyager focus 2. Expensive but I figured the time it would take me to figure it out and test others, plus the wasted efficiency while I figured it out would offset against the investment

I love my Bose 700 headset. "Extreme" scenarios where it helped: Two people in a small room on two different Teams meetings. We could talk at the same time, without our voices getting into each other's Team meetings and we didn't hear much of each other's conversations. Working from home, when the neighbors started to drill into the concrete and hammering stuff up on the walls. I could hear it, but not the people at the Teams meeting. Things I find especially useful: Adjustable amount of sounds that can be let though. I have 3 levels with a push of a button: 1 Block all, 2 Block most background sounds, 3 Let everything though. Each level can be adjusted from 1 to 10. I usually have it on level 2 when listening to music, so I can hear when people talk to me, but still listening to music. Connected to both computer and phone, so I can easily take calls on the phone while also using them for my computer. Long lasting battery. Recharging case (not the standard case), so it charges while I commute (using different ear buds for commuting). Great sound for both me and the people at the other end. I can wear them for hours without issues. With that being said, it is not perfect at holding all sounds out for you that wears it, but it blocks a lot. If I need to block out my surroundings more, I listen to music and then I hear nothing.

Hey hoping I can get some help here! Started working from home a few weeks ago and my company is very strict on background noise being heard while we are on calls. I have 2 small children who can be very loud even though I am in my home office room when my 1 year old screams for no reason I can hear her still so I am sure customers can too. Any advice or headsets that have worked well for you? I am at my witts end. They are only hear 2 days a week that I work but those 2 days end up being very hard and complicated for my husband trying to take them to the farthest room away from my office area to keep them quiet. Our house is very open concept so noise travels significantly. Any help for a different headset is very much appreciated. Pricing does not matter as long as it does the job I need to cancel out the background noise!

Thank you!!!

r/HeadphoneAdvice on Reddit: Headset with great noise-cancelling microphone, hardware mute and noise-cancelling "speakers". Need to handle children screams. Budget $250 USD
July 26, 2024 -

I have a great headset, the Sennheiser PC-37X, which has a microphone that combined with Zoom "noise cancellation" set to high, can filter out all children screaming. What it fails at (correctly) is filtering out their screams for myself: I can hear them loud and clear. This is desirable, most of the times I work and I want to be able to hear if they are in trouble. There are however some meetings that need all my attention. I really need a headset that can muffle or cancel entirely their screams in my ears, while still having an amazing microphone to filter out their voices for the people listening to me.

Notice that I do gaming often with my headset, but I don't have big requirements for that. I can also just use the PC-37X for gaming.

Any suggestion? Budget is roughly $250 USD, but keep in mind I'm located in Canada

I need to potentially wear the headset for 8 hours in a day (there are some bad days in terms of meetings), so over-ear headphones are the most comfortable for me.

April 9, 2024 -

Hey! This is my second time making this post, first one got deleted for some reason.

Basically, I'm starting a work from home job in a few weeks and have my 6 year old nephew and newborn niece in the same house as me. They are fairly quiet but kids will be kids and they make noise from time to time of course. I need to get a cheap (~$100) headset with a noise cancelling microphone for work, because I can't have background noise slipping through on calls. My job revolves around being on the phones pretty much all day, and to make matters worse my neighbors periodically play rap music so loud it shakes that side of the house.

The worst part is I can't install any software on the computer I'll be working from. I tried to get Krisp on it, but after talking with IT they said they can't have 3rd party software installed on the computers. Are there any headsets out there that I could pick up that come with the noise cancellation in the drivers or something? I think that they have Plantronics software installed on the computer already, so maybe I could update that or something if I get a Plantronics headset, but I'm not sure. Any help is massively appreciated!!

Having a noise-cancelling headset is always good since it allows you to block the outside noise while using it. You will be able to pay attention better while on a call or listening to something if you have this feature on your headset. Thus, if you expect to make important calls often, for example if you want to work from home, this is a feature that you may need.

These days, it is getting more common for people to work from home because employers are offering more accommodating rules to their employees. People will have options on where they want to work with this working model. This helps to improve their mood at work, which is meant to boost their productivity. While there is a chance for miscommunication during the work process, this can be avoided by holding online meetings, which have been shown to be successful. Here is where you need the working setup to ensure that you can continue to do your tasks properly without lacking of equipment to support them. For this specific reason, as meetings are a given in any form of business, a headset is required. Still, you need have a reliable headset for when you need it, so it is a good idea to get one that offers all features you need. Comfort, audio quality, and microphone should be your top concerns for making a choice. Of course, there will be other factors to think about, but with all of those three factors, you might be able to meet all of your needs for this particular reason.
Audio is an indicator of how well the headset produces sound. Clear and interference-free sound is produced by only high-quality headsets. It is always a good idea to read reviews from other customers before making a choice for the headset you want because you are able to see their experiences with that particular model. You can then summarize their feedback and decide whether or not to buy it. This doesn’t mean that you should take their opinions on the quality of the device blindly, but it will help you to set your expectations of that specific headset. Also, you will have a better idea of the good and bad sides of the headset if the model you choose has been reviewed by a reliable tech reviewer on Youtube.

If it is uncomfortable to wear, why are you buying it? This is probably the reason why, before selecting a headset, you should think about comfort. Considering that you generally only have to use a headset when you receive or make a call, it makes sense that you wouldn’t wear it all the time during work time. Choosing for the model that makes you feel comfortable when you are wearing it is still a wise choice, even if you don’t wear it often. What makes the headset comfortable to wear can be seen from the material of the ear cushions, the headband’s extension, and other components. Therefore, always consider this factor to see which one would be a better fit for you before making your decision.

If you use the headset for a meeting, a microphone is required for this purpose. Not every headset has a good microphone, some don’t even have the microphone that is suitable for a meeting, which leaves background noise unfiltered and unclear. Noise cancellation is one feature of a working-from-home headset that is specifically helpful. By having this feature, you may make the background noise on a call or meeting less distracting so the other person can focus on your voice. Always choose the features you really need if you want to get a budget-friendly headset because the other features included might not be as important for you.

Now it is your turn to find which headset covers the three aspects above to give you a decent experience in working from home. There will be a huge selection of headsets you can find out there, so it might be hard for you to find one that suits you the best. In this article, you will find the three headsets that are highly recommended to check. This doesn’t mean that there is no other choice out there, but simply just helping you to filter the options that might fit to your purposes.
