If you’re in the Apple ecosystem, AirPods Max hands down. I’ve tried them all. AirPods are top tier noise cancellation, and the seamless integration with other Apple products gives it the edge in my book. Fully expect to be slayed by this sub for my answer.

adly, there isn’t a pair of headphones on earth that can give you literal silence, active noise cancelling is great for steady sounds (fans, traffic, airplane hum), but human voices are irregular and higher-pitched, which ANC tech can’t erase completely. that’s why even the best bose or sony cans still let some kid-screaming through. what people in similar situations do is layer: deep-fit foam or musician’s plugs (like etymotic or decibullz custom molds) to physically block the sound first over-ear ANC headphones (sony wh-1000xm5 or bose qc ultra are top of the heap right now and i also like the jbuds) on top, to take out the droning background stuff and in really extreme cases, playing brown noise or ocean sounds through the headphones to mask the bits that leak through once you’re already maxed out on plugs + anc and it’s still unbearable, the next tier is custom molded shooting-range style electronic muffs (peltor, msa sordin). they clamp harder than consumer headphones but the passive attenuation + seal is what blocks voices better than fancy ANC ever will. Noise-cancelling headphones for total silence
If you want total silence, earplugs work a lot better.
Get yourself a pair of 35 dB and you'll save yourself a lot of money.
I've owned two active noise cancellation (over the ear) headphones. They work wonderfully well with white and pink noise (like on a plane) but the purpose is to improve the music.
So if you don't intend on listening to any music, earplugs will be cheaper and more effective.

I have two. Bose QC 45 which is very comfortable for me (I have a lot of hair) and Sony XM5 which is probably one of the best over ear noise canceling headphones. They're very effective and I use them on the bus and plane and I could bairly hear the plane engine.
