Leon’s and the brick sell mostly junk. And it’s not cheap junk anymore either. Shop around. Last spring Leon’s was asking $1500-$1700 for an all leather recliner. I ended up getting an actual lazy boy for almost the same price. Leon’s advertising will say Canadian made but it’s the same press board and junk wood out of China. Looking to buy a larger size bed and fell in love with this one but I just can’t get myself to order from Wayfair. What Canadian furniture companies are there? I’ve checked many but hoping you guys come up with something I haven’t thought of.

My current bed is from Quagga, a small company in the GTA that hand makes solid wood beds. But unfortunately they stopped making my current bed frame and I’m not a fan of their other models. Bonus points if you can recommend a Canadian made bed similar to the photo.

We're looking for a sectional sofa, and possibly a dining table (those neat natural wood-looking ones) and benches...what are some places to look for this stuff that won't leave us poor (i..e Crate and Barrel is too expensive), but offers decent quality?

We've checked out the Brick - and though we like some of their stuff, i'm not 100% sold on the quality. Like, will the sofas sag after a year? We have an Ektorp from Ikea and after 5 years it's still chugging along nicely. Also, we're not a big fan of Leon's or Ashley's. And super wary of online-only places like Wayfair...partly because we can't actually try the furnture before buying.

So what are your go-to places? Any recommendations welcome.

First off, I love this sub. I’ve gotten some great tips from here and last weekend I managed to do all my groceries without buying a single US product. Even lettuce!

Here’s my issue: my wife wants to buy a chair for a “reading nook” in our house. She loves West Elm and I’ve never argued with her on these purchases since she keeps the spending reasonable. But now with everything going on I’ve told her that we absolutely cannot buy furniture from a US store. She just doesn’t see my point of view on this. She hates Trump but it’s not next-level hatred like mine.

So my question is: are there any Canadian alternatives to West Elm with a similar look and quality that I can show my wife as alternative options? Even if it costs a lot more I rather spend the money on Canadian-made products than US. I’m located in Toronto.

Kavuus

https://www.kavuus.com

This place didn’t even show up in my searches (I recently was in the market for a couch). My girlfriend actually found out about them in a reddit COMMENT that was 4 years old out of all places.

Yes, they are pricier than some options from Ikea (Sweden), Brick (CA), Structube (CA), Leon’s (CA) but are at price parity with places like Urban Barn, EQ3.

The construction, cushion fill, and textile is FAR superior. I’m talking like orders of magnitude.

The furniture is made around the corner from their showroom, which is the second floor an unsuspecting office building located on Annacis Island in Delta, BC.

Don’t know about where they source their construction materials and textiles, but, 100% Canadian and made to order is good enough for me.

Anyways, just wanted to spread the word. These guys are killer.

edit: I wanted to add that they also allow you to pay through e-transfer and they pass off the savings on the payment processing fees to you by providing a 3% discount. At these price scales it is pretty sweet!

I bought a house and am graduating beyond Ikea and Walmart furniture. But I know nothing about furniture shopping. My one time in a Leon's was annoyingly high pressure and they seem overpriced.

Where do I go in southern Ontario for appropriately priced furniture that will last a long time?

Hi gang:

I'm moving into a new place come Feb (here's hoping my telco company does not go on strike)

and need new furniture...was looking at Article's sale esp the Ceni series (bundle).https://www.article.com/furniture-bundles

is it decent quality?...also considering Rove concepts....thing is i'm a shorter guy @ 5'6'', so need to be concerned about both how high and deep are the seat cushions of any sofa, so ideally it's better to test drive them in person...need barstools, a coffee table and a nice 62'' sideboard too above which to mount my LG oled 65'' tv.

I had an interior decorator do a walk thru for layout ideas and she also suggested:

lh decor

stylus sofas

boclair

even structube for some accessories/

any other quality stores you'd suggest? can imagine if a recession does hit us this yr that we'll see more sales ongoing.

Interior Designer here: Article and Rove Concept are both great. Stay away from Bouclair and Structube-you’re better off at IKEA or HomeSense. Both of those companies are very low quality. LHimports and Stylus are both direct to business companies-you can’t buy direct from them-you need to go through a 3rd party (although if you are working with an interior decorator you can buy through them). Both are fine quality wise-just depends what style you want. Van Gogh Designs is a furniture manufacturer out of Surrey (like Stylus-but more contemporary designs). You can buy their products through Urban Barn, Moe’s and a bunch of other retailers. I would also suggest EQ3 (many products many in Canada plus they are an authorized Herman Miller Dealer). West Elm, Crate & Barrel, CB2 and Pottery Barn are all mid-range good quality. Article doesn’t have a show room which is the downside-but the products are good quality and you can get fabric swatches directly from them. If you want higher end look at Montauk, Inform, Design House and Living Space. Do be aware that most places have major delays for most of their goods. Look for “quick ship” or “in stock” items if you need things soon. 2 places I like to order online from are: Design Within Reach and Gabriel Ross. DWR has a Toronto location, often has free shipping promos and you can see right on their website the lead times for everything. Again-no trying things in a show room but it’s all high quality classic pieces. Gabriel Ross is out of Victoria and sells a bunch of different brands-they’ll store everything in their warehouse and ship to you all at once which is also nice.

I'd recommend that you check k.out Nick Lewis on YouTube. He's local, although he does speak to a North American audience. He discusses all things furnishings and design, including brands. Quite educational.

I know the usual suspects (e.g., IKEA, Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, etc.), but what are some other places? Looking to get a sectional sofa, and I'm running out ideas. Are there any local spots that are good quality and a decent price?

I've known that Canadian-made pieces are usually more expensive than imports for a long time, but these days it's basically a point of pride to own as much locally-made stuff as possible, including new furniture.

And you still have The Brick, Leon's, or Structube for cheaper options, or some local manufacturers that do great custom pieces, don't want to advertise it, but I just love the pieces from this Oakville furniture store, and just got two lounge chairs from them.

But, getting back to the question - are locally made furniture or any other kind of craftsmanship work worth it for you? Especially with the whole taxes thing from the "friends" in the US? Will everything keep getting more expensive?

Because it makes sense for people not to want to overpay for goods that are already expensive, and I'm curious what others think about this.

When it comes to buying furniture, I’m confused. It feels like you have the option of a sofa from Ikea or The Brick etc. or you can buy a $11,000 sofa from some place on King East… but there’s nothing in between.

But if you want to buy sturdy, interesting furniture that isn’t either as generic as Ikea (love Ikea, just have a lot of it already) or as expensive as DWR or designer stuff, where do you go?

Looking for a sofa in particular, but just asking generally too.

Hi folks,

Our current Ikea furniture - dressers, nightstands, shelves etc. is now over five years old, and slowly disintegrating. We'd like to upgrade to something better - something more solid, that isn't made out of chipboard and hope. Ideally something we don't have to put together ourselves!

If we can get away from chain store stuff and more toward buy-it-for-life, even better.

Any recommendations are gratefully received. I started nosing around Mennonite handmade, but realised I was out of my depth on what's well made and what isn't, so figured I'd try and outsource that to the community.

Good quality, inexpensive home/furniture stores?
