If you just want to experiment, then it doesn't really matter too much what you use. The PHP executable actually has a tiny built-in web server (which most people forget about) so you don't have to install anything separately. Let's say you installed PHP into C:\php7 and your PHP scripts are in C:\Web\Stuff. You would launch the command prompt, then: c: cd\php7 php.exe -S 127.0.0.1:8080 -t C:\Web\Stuff That will launch the server, and you can go into your browser and if you have a PHP script called C:\Web\Stuff\myscript.php, you can run it with: http://127.0.0.1:8080/myscript.php This is the best way if you just want to experiment a little bit with PHP. That way you don't have to install a whole separate web server or deal with that configuration. Really, you should only install a separate web server like Apache if you're going to really be investing a lot of time into this and you want things like the web server starting up when Windows starts, or you want to try out more complex PHP applications like Wordpress or something. I used to use AWS until they started adding hidden costs to everything, at which point I painstakingly moved all devices to Digital Ocean and have never looked back. AWS became unmanageably expensive for me and I have at least as good servers in Digital Ocean now, but they run at a fraction of the cost.
