Orbital sanders come in different patterns. The smaller the number, the tighter the patterns, and finer the finish.

Answer (1 of 3): There’s no single “best” sander for this rather broad question. I have an orbital sander for finishing (flat surfaces mostly), an oscillating tabletop sander for shaping, a belt sander for taking off larger surface irregularities and hand sanders for fine finishing work.

But "elliptical surface" is ambiguous in English, I think we need a photograph or at least a sketch to be sure we know what you're working on (as well as the scale of the job).
