Hi all, I'm looking for maybe 3 complimentary grasses, sedges and rushes for a base for a shaded planting that is mostly under tree cover during the warmer months. Zone is 7a/7b cusp in Maryland, mostly clay soil under leaf mulch that stays at least a little moist a lot of the year.
I'm attracted to the looks of prairie plantings in full sun, so hopefully there is a combination approximating that for the shade. I'm doing alright with selecting flowering plants, but the options are a bit overwhelming. A very quick look made me think something like purple love grass / fox's broom sedge / Canada rush. Point me in the right direction, thanks!

i like grays sedge, and it does well in my part shade rain garden. northern sea oats as well.

Bottlebrush grass is one of the few grass species that tolerate shade. Glyceria striata might also do well, it’s it’s moist soil. Path rush may tolerate some shade, and I can’t think of any other rush species that would. Sedges are your best bet. Carex pensylvanica, muskingumensis, rosea, radiata, eburnea, grayi, and vulinoidea come to mind.

Carex, hundreds of different varieties. Generally only a few available at garden centers, but you can buy over the internet if you have something very specific you are looking for. In my area Southern Living has their Evercolor brand which has some really nice looking ones. http://evercolorplants.com/#varieties You didn't say where you lived, but hellebores and heuchera are some other small/tough evergreen shade loving plants that flower and have very nice foliage.
