r/NativePlantGardening on Reddit: Grasses, Sedges and Rushes for a Shady 7a/7b
July 26, 2023 -

Hi all, I'm looking for maybe 3 complimentary grasses, sedges and rushes for a base for a shaded planting that is mostly under tree cover during the warmer months. Zone is 7a/7b cusp in Maryland, mostly clay soil under leaf mulch that stays at least a little moist a lot of the year.

I'm attracted to the looks of prairie plantings in full sun, so hopefully there is a combination approximating that for the shade. I'm doing alright with selecting flowering plants, but the options are a bit overwhelming. A very quick look made me think something like purple love grass / fox's broom sedge / Canada rush. Point me in the right direction, thanks!

May 16, 2024 - Getting control of existing weeds prior to planting is much easier than controlling them after ornamentals are planted. Species or cultivars with red or purple foliage will have more vivid color if grown in full sun and may turn green in shade.
