I’m looking to buy a high quality play kitchen that will work for both my toddler and my older kid. My youngest is almost 2 and obsessed with pretend cooking, but my 5-year-old also loves playing restaurant and “baking” with play food. I want something that will keep both of them entertained without feeling too babyish for my older one or too complicated for my little one.
I initially considered KidKraft because they seem to have a great reputation for play kitchens, and their designs are really appealing—bright colors, realistic features, and lots of accessories. However, I noticed that their products are manufactured in China and other Asian countries. I know they adhere to strict safety standards and conduct rigorous testing, but I’m still a little hesitant. I’ve been reading more about toy safety lately, and while I’m not usually overly concerned, this feels like a big purchase, and I want to make sure I’m getting something I can feel completely confident about.
I found a Little Tikes plastic kitchen on Craigslist, which would be more affordable, but I’m not sure if it’s as durable or if the plastic concerns me. On the flip side, I’ve seen some beautiful wooden kitchens made in the USA that are super high-quality and non-toxic—but they’re really expensive and, honestly, a little... plain? I know the minimalist designs encourage creativity, but I also want something that’s fun and engaging for my kids.
So, I’d love to hear from other parents: What play kitchen do you have, and what do you like or dislike about it? Did you prioritize safety and durability over aesthetics, or did you find a good balance? Are there any brands or models you’d recommend that check all the boxes—safe, durable, engaging, and visually appealing? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

At what age should I buy my child a play kitchen?
According to Dr. Theodore, kids usually become interested in play kitchens at around 2 years old. “This is developmentally when children begin to demonstrate curiosity, role play, the beginning of imaginary play and modeling/imitating adult activities, which naturally lends itself to interest in kitchen role play,” she explains.

Are play kitchens Montessori?
Montessori toys encourage kids to independently (and confidently) explore and experiment, usually in real-life scenarios. Montessori toys are typically made of wood or other natural materials and free from over-stimulating elements like flashing lights, music or electronics. Some wooden play kitchens might be considered Montessori to an extent – although some say that for a play kitchen to genuinely be Montessori, it would involve real food and kitchen accessories rather than fake ones.

I’ve been scouring the internet for the perfect play kitchen for my 15 month old. It’s supposed to be the “big gift” for Christmas this year. She has a VERY small room that I would ideally like to put the kitchen in, but I’ll happily buy a bigger one and find a place for it if it’s worth it! I can’t decide between a “Montessori style” plain wooden one or one with lights and sounds, etc. Which one do you have, what do you like about it, and links are always appreciated! 💖
