July 2, 2025 - Certainly did! I remember the toys and bikes, of course. We didn't have one of the fancy architecture stores. Our's was just in a strip mall. ... Yes!!! October 29, 2024 - After almost dying due to bankruptcy, Best returned as a major chain & now operates over 178 stores in 32 US states & a store in Puerto Rico. Some Best stores have an in-store Toys "R" Us.

One of the buildings sat empty for at least four years; i regret having not taken pictures of it. Best Products was in Greensboro from about 1978 on, about a block from the house where I grew up. The store there is now a Big Lots, after having been a Heilig-Myers furniture for a few years.

The intentionally crumbling brick at that Houston store, known as “Indeterminate Façade,” and the eight other showrooms SITE designed, were simultaneously iconic and controversial, and most importantly for BEST, they brought in customers.

March 31, 2020 - The Forest Best store, is it still a “disaster architecture,” or did they alter it? Richmond was lucky to have two of the Best Products Disaster stores. The location on Midlothian has been empty ever since the company collapsed.

In the '70s and early '80s, BEST Products, a retail chain based in Richmond, built nine showrooms designed by SITE (Sculpture In The Environment), the same design firm responsible for the Ghost Parking Lot.

The critic who wrote this might know a little something about architecture, but she knows nothing of the retail history of this country in the last half of the 1900’s. Best was one of several retailers operating as catalog showrooms. Discounting of basic household necessities began to take hold in the late ‘50’s, E. J. Korvette in the Northeast being the most visible at the time. Previous to that, shopping for this quality branded product was largely limited to department stores, which basically followed manufacturer’s dictates on pricing.
