r/horror on Reddit: Psychological horror recommendations?
April 26, 2022 -

I love things like The Thing, Shutter, Oculus, Skeleton Key, any and all Evil Dead films (apart from the new one) also love slashers like the OG Scream + Halloween. I love getting mind fucked and appreciate a twist. Also love when a movie has an unhappy ending.

I don’t like gore porn/shock horror. If it’s gore filled just for the sake of being, it’s ick to me. Things like Terrifyer is not scary at all to me. It’s entertaining but not scary. I spit on your grave is another example.

Any suggestions? Old or new. Looking for new things to watch! :)

r/horror on Reddit: Looking for the scariest psychological horror movies you can think of
September 28, 2023 -

During October I like to watch a Horror movie every night, ending with a full evening of Horror on Halloween, I like the Halloween session to actually terrify me but I've become very desensitised to Horror so most of the slasher/monster/gore/Supernatural movies just don't scare me anymore.

So I'm looking for recommendations for psychological horror movies that are either terrifying, unbelievably creepy or extremely uncomfortable.

I'm asking Reddit because every list of the "scariest movies" has completely failed me.

Think along the lines of Midsommar, Dogtooth, Creep and Get Out... but scarier.

Thank you!

Edit: Lots of replies so I may not be able to respond to all of them, but I appreciate them, and will let you know what I think of the movies you suggested after I watch them!

I would personally recommend The Invitation (the 2015 movie -- not the 2022 one, although the 2022 movie, which is unrelated to 2015 movie, is entertaining). It's a great example of extremely simple but brilliant storytelling. The characters are wonderful. The acting is great. Same goes for the writing and directing. You get some queer representation. The story is familiar, as all stories sort of are, but The Invitation tackles a familiar situation in a way that feels fresh. It plays with your mind a bit as you try to figure out what's going on. It's debatably arthouse, which I'm suuuuuuuper allergic to, but it never feels look-at-how-smart-and-artsy-and-weird-we-are-for-the-sake-of-being-smart-and-artsy-and-weird. Also, the ending is an absolute stunner. No spoilers, of course, but the last few shots are just so delightful and rewarding. They elevate an already outstanding movie. I can't really say anything more about those final shots without ruining your experience, but it's... It's great, dude. I love this movie more and more each time I watch it. I just showed it to my boyfriend and he was blown away. It's the kind of movie that sticks with you for a long time. At least, it's stuck with me over the years. Lots of pathos. Lots of mindfuckery. And lots of follow through. So, yeah. Can't recommend it enough. I love a story that puts characters first, and this movie certainly does that. The emotions hit you like a ton of bricks. It's just so wonderfully executed. I could go on and on about it. Blah-blah-blah... I think it's a winner. Check it out, if you want to. If you do, reply to this comment and let me know what you think! Cheers.

I prefer those types of movies. Thing is, I think fear comes from the shock of something happening to someone but that only REALLY works if you didn't know that kind of stuff happened or the film makers did such a good job making you feel empathy that you get upset from seeing it happen to the people in the film. We often have built in empathy for animals like dogs and cats which is why they tend to be so effective. With that TED Talk out of the way... IDK how scary these are but they're some of my favorites that are in the vein you described. Only one that made me physically uncomfortable (anxious) was Nocturnal Animals for 'that scene'. But they're all worth the watch! Nocturnal Animals St. Maude The Lodge House That Jack Built The Lighthouse Strangers Funny Games Clockwork Orange The Gift Not technically horror but kinda scary and a great film: Ex Machina

So my favorite genre of all time is horror (no suprise lol), but within that genre one of my favorite sub genres is psychological horrors/thrillers. However, I find that I can never really find any good psychological thrillers that really make me think (which is my ultimate goal.) I'd really love a movie that makes me question shit, like with grey morals or a grey protagonist. Those aren't requiremnets, but that would be nice.

For example, some of my favorite movies are these (not in any particular order):

  1. Silence of the Lambs

  2. The Sixth Sense

  3. Psycho

  4. Shutter Island

  5. Fight Club (not horror but ifykyk)

  6. Scream

And I'm currently watching the og Saw, which I really like so far. I know these are really basic, I promise I've seen a lot more but these movies stick out to me when I think about my favorites. Also my favorite book is misery by Stephen King, if that also helps. Sorry that this post was so long, I just really wanted some new horror movies to watch and expience since I love this genre so much. Oh and I'm not opposed to gore, it's actually quite fun to watch if done tastefully.

My boyfriend and I LOVE to watch psychological thriller and horror movies, but we are running low on good picks and most of the movies we've seen recently have been slightly corny. We loved the slightly newer movies like Blink Twice (2024), US (2019), the Invisible Man (2020), Don't Worry Darling (2022) and my boyfriend really loved the First Omen (2024). We LOVE movies with a good plot twist and ending. Seeing if anyone can recommend newer movies that you thought were similar to my list. Thanks!!

My favorite type of horror is psychological horror.

My favorites are The Invitation, Coherence, Get Out and NOPE.

Side note - it’s interesting to me how many of these have a dinner party aspect in common!

Anyway - what are your favorites/what do you think are the best psychological horror movies? Especially if they’re on shudder!

r/horror on Reddit: Psychological thrillers/horror films with no gore and few to no jump scares.
October 27, 2024 -

Pretty much what the title says. I’m a big baby when it comes to jump scares and gore. Realistic gore is the worse for me as I’ve watched plenty of graphic/violent movies/tv series.

Please be kind. I LOVE the thrill of a horror movie but I’m a wimp.

Movies I’ve liked:

  • The Mothman Prophecies

  • The Blair Witch Project

  • The Invitation

  • I See You

  • The Ring

  • The Others

  • The Skeleton Key

  • The Mist

  • A Quiet Place

  • Rosemary’s Baby

  • Silence of the Lambs

  • Psycho

  • 1408

  • It (2017) I LOVED this movie because it made me laugh.

  • Sleepy Hollow

  • Sweeney Todd

  • Secret Window

  • Inception

  • Zombieland

  • Ghost Ship

  • Creep

  • Paranormal Activity

  • And, yes, I’m a rare M. night Shyamalan movie fan. Signs, The Sixth Sense, The Watchers, Trap, Old, Split, even The Village (stupid ending). Those are the ones I’ve seen.

TV series I’ve liked:

  • Archive 81

  • Yellowjackets

  • The Haunting of Hill House

  • Midnight Mass

  • The Haunting of Bly Manor

  • American Horror Story

  • The Fall of the House of Usher

  • The Walking Dead (the first six seasons)

  • Game of Thrones (just counting it for the graphic nature. Most of it was fine because of how dark the whole show was.)

  • Black Mirror

  • Servant

  • The Sinner

  • Evil (should have never been canceled!!)

  • Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities —————————————————————————

Movies/shows that had too much gore/jump scares for my liking-

  • The Lady in the Black Dress

  • The Strangers

  • 13 Ghosts (but I loved the concept)

  • Scream (the first one wasn’t bad at all but I am scared to watch the other ones)

  • I Know What You Did Last Summer

  • Wrong Turn

  • Final Destination (but I LOVE the movies but I can’t watch the deaths)

  • The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003 with Jessica Biel. That first scene did me in)

  • Hostel (omg, that movie.)

  • Saw 1 & 2 (I loved the parts that I could watch but covered my eyes for a lot of it)

  • Pan’s Labyrinth

K, that should be a good amount of work to understand me, I think?

What would you recommend?

Movies I am interested in but scared to watch:

  • Midsommar

  • Get Out

  • Nope

  • Ma

  • Us

  • The Lighthouse

  • The Menu

  • Cube

  • Pearl

  • Orphan

  • It Follows

  • The Babadook

  • Annihilation

  • A Quiet Place Day One

  • It Chapter Two

  • Don’t Breathe

Thank you in advance!

ETA : a couple of more movies plus movies that I have on my watchlist but I’m too scared to watch. 😂

I'm in the mood to watch something that will make me sit there in silence for a good 10 minutes. I want something that will make me think and go over what I just watched and be like "Ohhh that makes so much sense now!"

Please, I haven't seen a good movie like this in awhile. And I did start I'm Thinking of Ending Things but the slow pace threw me off and I only got up to them waving at his mom in the window. If it gets better please let me know lol

Best Horror Movies on Netflix Right Now (December 2025) - IGN
December 2, 2025 - You can expect psychological horror, eco-horror, aquatic horror, even possession horror as Block Island community members try to understand the unexplainable events washing upon their shores. The Block Island Sound weaponizes the idea of "siren songs," toys with out-of-body nightmares, and mixes a spoonful of grief into the batter as storytelling churns like a storm that won’t pass. ... It’s the Mike Flanagan movie that gets talked about the least — in my experience — yet deserves the world.

r/MovieSuggestions on Reddit: Any spooky, slow burn psychological horror films like Heretic or The Witch?
October 27, 2024 -

I feel like I've seen ALL the good horror movies, but I'm hoping to prove myself wrong. I love slow burn, psychological horror like The Witch (2015) and Heretic (2024) but I feel I've seen them all.

Any gripping slow burns you can recommend? For reference, these are the ones I've already seen and liked:

Saint Maud (2019) Enemy (2013) The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017) The Devil’s Backbone (2001) The Ritual (2017)

And the last horror movie I watched that I thought was decent was Cold Skin (2017).

I'm not a fan of slashers. Serial killer mysteries are okay depending on the quality. Any recommendations will save me from boredom this week.

I like atmospheric / psychological horror films. The ones that make you think… Like always at the edge of your seat because something just feels not quite right…

Like killing of a sacred deer, Midsommar, Men, the witch, pretty much all of the A24 stuff… I am open to extreme gore etc

I just like movies that are outside of the box… original in their own right. Please help…
