r/MacOS on Reddit: What's the best replacement for the Apple Time Capsule?
February 9, 2022 -
My Time Capsule died today (RIP), and I'd love to continue backing up wirelessly to a local device from my MacBook.
What do people currently recommend as the best way to do this?

Get an entry level Synology single or double bay NAS + a 3.5" Western Digital Red Plus drive of sufficient size. I wouldn't rely on a router. A router's primary purpose is to connect your devices to the Internet. Storage is an afterthought. Let the router do router things. Get a storage device (NAS) to do storage things.

Hi all, I'm thinking of upgrading my Time Capsule 500GB to 1TB and I'd like some recommendations on replacement drives. I've heard Western Digital do a 'green' low-power drive, but I think they're only 5400 rpm. I'd like something that is quiet, reliable and low-powered, but I don't want it... March 1, 2022 - The best for Time Machine is to plug the USB drive directly into the Mac. It is faster, much more reliable and cheapest possible solution for replacement of Time Capsule.

December 4, 2010 - I have a Time Capsule I bought shortly after they came out. A few months ago I replaced the drive with a WD green 1.5TB. I did not do anything fancy, just opened the TC, dropped in the new drive, and closed it up. No thought of jumpers or anything else. The TC is very quiet and cooler.

December 16, 2022 - If the disk craps out in the future, I'll replace it with a 4TB SSD, using this for a guide: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Airport+Time+Capsule+A1470+Hard+Drive+Replacement/61924 - although I'm not sure if I'll need some sort of bracket to hold the SSD in place.

April 22, 2020 - Typically a NAS drive will suit fine. And you can use sizes up to 8TB as I have done it myself. Over 8TB is also likely fine but I see little point to it. Note the mountings of the hard disk will need re-fabrication because they only fit that model seagate. It is purely friction fit with rubber ...

March 3, 2021 - However if you want a portable drive to carry with you WD passport has plenty of fans (and some detractors). For plugging into the computer I would also think seriously about SSD. A 1TB is not so expensive now. Samsung are good brand. No point in using SSD on Time Capsule as the USB2 port is slow.

You can use pretty much any SATA hard drive you want, the guide for installing the drive is here, and you should clone your old one to the new one.

I tried replacing the 500GB in my A1302 with a Western Digital 2 TB drive (WD20EADS) -- worked fine with the exception of the fact that it never spun down. Ever. This obviously negated the heat benefit of using a "green" drive. Not wanting to take a chance on either a seagate drive or the samsung firmware update, I took a flyer on a new drive -- Hitachi Deskstar 5K3000 HDS5C3020ALA632 (0F12117). Thus far it formatted fine, is quiet, and most importantly, spins down as expected. They have a 3TB version, but I didn't want to push my luck. · The 7K3000 7200 RPM series would likely work as well -- would be somewhat faster, but my main concern was heat and resultant power supply failure, so I went with the less power-hungry drive. · At the same time, I got rid of the rubber mat and replaced it with 4 rubber feet. Not terribly elegant, but it sure runs cooler (and hopefully longer). · Best of luck. · TW

Yes, you can. The A1409 contains a standard WDC Green 2TB HDD. I used the existing repair instructions to replace this with a WDC Green 4TB HDD - exactly the same except double the capacity. When the Time Capsule restarts you get an error message in Airport Utility saying the "Disk needs repair". Click the error message, then hit "Erase" and Airport Utility formats a 4TB partition on the new HDD.
