November 19, 2023 -
Hello!
I have a friend who loves poetry and I would love to book-bind a small collection of short poems for her as a gift. What are your favorites or source recommendations? I'm hoping to have a varied and unique set (not just the most popular). Thank you so much for any input, it means a lot!!

IMO the greatest poet, at least of the ones I have read. The Eagle By Alfred, Lord Tennyson He clasps the crag with crooked hands; Close to the sun in lonely lands, Ring'd with the azure world, he stands. The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls; He watches from his mountain walls, And like a thunderbolt he falls.

I guess I don't have a specific length in mind when I talk about very short poems but maybe something that's no longer than a dozen lines and the lines are quite short.
My favorite is the famous poem, This Is Just To Say, by W.C. Williams. I like it because I can really picture and imagine the taste of those sweet and cold plums that the speaker so selfishly ate:
I have eaten
the plums
that were in
the icebox
and which
you were probably
saving
for breakfast
Forgive me
they were delicious
so sweet
and so cold

This poem from 1960 offers a great way into the world of Ted Hughes’s poetry. It’s short and almost imagistic in its concision and focus on its central image – that of the white flower, described memorably with its ‘pale head heavy as metal’ in this eight-line masterpiece.

Anonymous, ‘Fowls in the Frith’. This poem, which is around 800 years old, is ambiguous: the speaker ‘mon waxë wod’ (i.e. must go mad) because of the sorrow he walks with, but what causes this sorrow? The last line is ambiguous, too: does ‘beste’ mean ‘beast’ or ‘best’? The spelling reveals nothing, and in the context of that final line it could be either.
