What's the Difference Between Bluetooth Headsets and Headphones?
Stereo headphones aren't just for listening to music; they also make calls, often quite well. So, if you're thinking about some wireless headphones to rock out to, you might not need a separate Bluetooth headset. Remember that stereo headphones can sometimes be bulky and might not block distracting environmental noises competently.
By contrast, the stereo headsets in this roundup are lighter and often have boom mics that easily isolate your voice. We compare the two options more decisively in our roundup of the best headsets and headphones for your home office.
How Much Should You Spend on a Bluetooth Headset?
The sweet spot for a mono Bluetooth headset is around $100, and if you shop around, you can often find discounts that lower the price slightly. A quality stereo headset generally runs between $150 and $300. The headsets in this roundup are on the high end of that price range because we focused on the absolute best-performing devices for people who rely on their headsets all day.
You can often find a decent (or even excellent) headset for under $50 because they tend to remain in retail channels for a long time after the manufacturer discontinues them. Cheaper Jabra, Motorola, and Poly headsets work fine; they just aren't up to the performance standards of the more expensive category leaders. Typically, they are a bit clunkier and don't offer as effective noise cancellation, but then again, you aren't paying a premium for them.

I’ve been using single ear bluetooth headsets for years, like this one:
I listen to the radio with them when not making calls. The plastic clip keeps it on my ear (vs an apple airpod type of push into the ear design) and keeps 1 ear open for things going on around me.
I had a bunch of these and over the years, lost and broke them. I need to get more now.
Seems they are passe / out of production?!
I’ve tried low end airpod knock offs, using just 1 of them. Battery life is just a couple hours of streaming audio, they pop out of my ear easier ('ve tried smaller / larger ear pieces). and they are so touch sensitive. I just need an 'answer call / hang up button and volume controls. Reinserting into the ear, etc. causes it to stop playing, etc.
What are you using these days with these things in mind:
- Has a mic to take / make calls
- But good for listening to streaming audio (I am NOT an audiophile).
- Stays on the ear when working in the yard / server room
- Keeps 1 ear open?
- Inexpensive
You are probably looking for a sports Bluetooth ear buds. Something like this (Not recommending this exact one, just the style you might be looking for.)

My father takes a lot of calls — during the day, in the lab, around machines, even while driving. So I’ve been planning on getting him something small, not in-ear, with good battery life and a strong mic that can handle loud environments (like next to engines, vacuum pumps, etc.).
I personally use AirPods for noise cancelation, but that’s not really his thing.
Don’t care about budget, just want something that’s good quality and built for this kind of use.
Figured some of you older folks might know something I don’t, despite all the research. Any suggestions?
EDIT: I forgot to mention , my dad wears glasses , so I feel like if it sits on the back of his ear, might not be comfortable. Maybe some of you might know the struggle .
Mine isn't cutting it (also below) & I've tried the other two & had to return them. Anyone have any other suggestions please? It's got to be the one that fits around the ear. No way do I want 2 things over my ears all day long, feeling all hot & tight!
