I miss mall culture in general. That the people in the store were there to help you with purchases. I miss that people could support themselves working as a sales person.

A lot of people mentioning stores that aren't department stores in the traditional sense. Yeah, yeah, Toys-R-Us has the doll department and the toy gun department and the Lego department, so I guess it counts. I miss Hudson's, a glorious department store chain in Michigan. I suppose you can say that Target is a direct descendent, but that's doing a huge disservice to the history of Hudson's. On the other hand, I'd probably not shop there and I'm part of the problem of stores disappearing: I literally had no idea that Mervyn's was defunct.

Benetton. I never actually shopped there because there wasn’t a shop in my area and it was expensive but I loved the layered sweater look in the 80s and I loved the United Colors ads.

December 31, 2024 - A big box like Sears, a “fancier” big box like Dillard’s, Target, then your typical niche stores like Spencers, Waldenbooks, KB Toys, etc. Of course an arcade and food court. The best model for me would be Lynnhaven Mall in Virginia Beach, although they never had Target.

Mine had a climbing wall) Barney's Coffee (1980s through mid-aughts. You could get a coffee, or buy it. Sold "flavor drops" for in your purse, for when yougot stuck drinking crappy coffee) The Wall (a corporate record store for sheep. Wait, I didn't say I wanted to skip it!) Lechter's (1980s kitchen stuff) Waccamaw (early 1990s, like Bed Bath and Beyond) G&G (80s and 90s forerunner to Rave) Park Lane Hosiery (1980s. I remember their sexy adult Halloween costumes) Hot Sam's (1980s-early 2000s. The king of hot pretzels. Heaven has lots of them.) Nothern Reflections (1980s to mid 1990s. Comfy, practical clothes moms loved. Get the look that screams "I just came in from canoe paddling to take the kids to soccer, then it's out for some birding!")

There was a clothing chain called Contempo Casuals that sold goth/weirdo friendly clothing. Their clothing and jewellery lasted forever. I had a pair of black crushed velvet leggings from there that lasted ten years. They were pretty much the only mall store that wouldn't follow you around if you looked different. They closed in the early 90's I think.
