July 28, 2024A new washing machine in 2024. What can I buy for life?
Your answer is going to be “speed queen” For my part, I wasn’t able to drop the money on one when my washer recently died. I opted for the one at my big box store with the least bells and whistles. There certainly is a control board in it, but the wash cycle and temp selectors are manual dials. There is no LCD display, it doesn’t hook up to my WiFi. No software etc. if you can stay away from all that stuff, I think you are better off, even if you can’t afford the “top end” speed queens. More on reddit.com

Our 10-yr-old washing machine (a Maytag) started making awful noises and we had a repair guy with many years' experience come over to take a look at it. He diagnosed the problem and, with the cost of the repair, it makes more sense for us just to buy a new machine.
Here's the rub: The top 6 machines on Consumer Reports are LG machines, and LG also is at the top of their brand reliability ratings. But the repair guy said, "whatever you do, don't get an LG. Or a Samsung." (this is just a repair person, by the way. He doesn't sell appliances, just fixes them.)
What's a buyer to do?
