Dorm mattresses are brutal, so adding a topper is a must. I tried the Sleep Mantra topper during my time, and while it’s plush, breathable, and fits Twin XL perfectly, it’s more on the soft side. It adds a nice cushioned layer but may not be firm enough if your son prefers medium firm. For solid support, I’d recommend looking into a medium firm memory foam or a thinner latex topper. those offer better structure for someone who doesn’t like super soft options. does your mattress have a return or comfort policy and are you still within that window?? when you’re in pain, sometimes it’s worth looking at a replacement rather than just trying to cover it up. a topper can help in the right situation. since you said your mattress is too firm, a soft topper could cradle your body and take some of the pressure off. they work best at softening, not the other way around. what’s your normal sleep position? side sleepers generally need the most plush cushioning, back sleepers do well with something a little more balanced, and stomach sleepers usually need a thinner layer so they don’t sink too far in. I like this one only because it has breathable cotton on top and despite the filling it doesnt turn lumpy/overheated. in case you’re unsure exactly how soft you need, it helps to test toppers in person. some stores will have latex, foam, or pillow-top styles out on display. height and weight make a difference too: on a thinner topper you might bottom out, while a thicker or plusher one gives you more sink. i’ve found that testing a couple in person is the fastest way to figure out whether a 2" or 3" style actually feels like a hotel bed. if in-person isn’t possible, at least look for a brand with a trial or solid return policy, that way you’re not stuck if it doesn’t match what you had in mind.

My son is going to college next month and is trying to figure out what mattress topper to buy. The mattress they provide is like a cot mattress, and this will go on top of it. He is 5'8" and weighs 168 pounds. He likes a bed that's medium to medium-firm (he finds the tempurpedic topper to be too soft). The bed will be twin XL, so it needs to come in that size.
Any advice appreciated!

I might lean towards the 3rd option. He doesn't need a lot of cushioning and it will probably be easier to keep clean. Teenage boys and dorm rooms both lack hygiene. It should work nicely to make the cheap mattress feel more like a normal bed.
