My son is going to college next month and is trying to figure out what mattress topper to buy. The mattress they provide is like a cot mattress, and this will go on top of it. He is 5'8" and weighs 168 pounds. He likes a bed that's medium to medium-firm (he finds the tempurpedic topper to be too soft). The bed will be twin XL, so it needs to come in that size.
Any advice appreciated!

My partner and I currently sleep on a queen-size Vibe Gel Memory Foam mattress w/ a 3-inch Tempur-pedic "Serenity" topper.
This is the topper: https://www.costco.com/serenity-by-tempur-pedic-3-inch-mattress-topper.product.4000042059.html, and I believe this is the mattress (I don't remember precisely): https://www.amazon.com/Vibe-12-Inch-Memory-Mattress-Queen/dp/B074NDQ143
The mattress was too firm for comfort on its own, so we tried the topper, and we like the way it feels.
The main issue with this setup is that we can still feel each other's movements.
When we visited some friends, we slept on a pair of twin XL mattresses side-by-side, and we loved that we couldn't feel each other getting up or changing positions in the night. So that's the setup we're shopping for now.
I basically see two options:
-
Get two cheap twin XLs and just get two of the same mattress toppers.
-
Get two higher quality twin XLs that match the mattress topper feeling.
Some more relevant details:
-
We both sleep on our backs
-
I don't think we sleep hot. We just shed a layer of covers in the summer and add it back in the winter months. We definitely don't wake up with any noticeable amount of sweat.
-
Our budget is ~$1000 total (not including new bed frame)
I appreciate any tips!
I'm getting a twin XL mattress topper for my dorm mattress. I didn't want something cheap, but wanted a fair value but not pay $150+. Since getting a new matress isn't ideal for a dorm, I thought I might get something that would last me 3-4 years through college. Any advice where to go and what to get?
Last year I had a decent topper from bed bath and beyond for my twin xl and this year I’m looking for a full topper to put on the mattress my apartment came with. All the recommendations for toppers online are like $300-500. There’s also the Casper one which looks thin for $230.
An alternative one be one of the Amazon 3” toppers which have thousands of great reviews but I also read the ones that aren’t too good and I’m unsure on which one to get. Linenspa or Lucid 3” toppers are choices that looks solid based on reviews for $80. Wanted to know if any mattress experts think this is a solid way to go. I really want to prioritize good sleep and I’ve been sleeping so well back home with a great tempurpidic mattress and Casper pillows.
Hi! I am trying to buy a mattress topper and am having a difficult time finding a vegan mattress topper that is well-reviewed and not made of the smelly foam stuff. It needs to:
-
fit a twin xl bed
-
be soft because the hard college-provided mattresses make my joint pain worse (yay for joint hypermobility)
-
not have any down or wool (vegan)
-
ideally be made of organic and produced ethically
-
maybe be made of recycled synthetics, but I also have hyperhidrosis and don't want to turn my bed into a sweat cave... so would prefer something more breathable
I was originally thinking the Avocado vegan mattress topper in plush but have seen bad reviews, and the White Lotus Home organic cotton mattress toppers doesn't have many reviews.
p.s. Any sustainable vegan duvet insert/comforter recs would also be recommended. I loved the previous one I had since I was a toddler, but it was non-vegan and also it got damaged by wear over time and would litter feathers everywhere until it was kind of non-fixable. I also like the one I am currently borrowing from my parents, but it is the Ikea mulberry silk-filled one (also nonvegan), so I am not going to get one of these either.
I’m looking for a new mattress topper for my twin xl bed. I bought this 4in memory foam topper and it is HARD AS A ROCK, while simultaneously acting as “the void” (ie. I sink in and have no support whatsoever)
I need something supportive (and maybe soft?) that wont mash in my shoulders when i sleep, and preferably within the $100-200 range. I’ve been looking at latex toppers, but i cant tell if they’re worth the hype yet.
Does anyone have any recommendations? I cannot go another night with this terrible shoulder pain 😭😭
Hey there! I’m an incoming freshman and I wasn’t sure if anyone had recommendations for a mattress topper to use for their dorm room? I have never used a mattress topper and I just don’t want to buy a super expensive one if it’s not really worth it ya know? Any recommendations or advice is awesome. Thanks!! :)
Hey all! Not 100% sure this is the right place to post this, but I'll ask anyway :/ I will be a college freshman this year and have been told to buy a mattress topper as the mattresses aren't very comfortable in the dorms. However, that will add some height to the bed, and I am worried the twin XL sheets I'm going to buy won't fit over the topper and mattress. Should I buy larger sheets to fit over the topper (maybe a full-size fitted sheet?)? Or will the twin XL sheets cover a mattress and topper? Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this!
Also, I'm purely talking about the fitted sheet, not a top sheet!
Hi everyone! I’m moving back into my dorm soon and I need a new mattress topper. My roommate has recommended the Sleepyhead one and I love how it feels but it is honestly pretty expensive for me. I’m willing to pay if there’s no better/similar quality at a lower price though I’d prefer to avoid that, which is why I’m here.
Things I’m looking for in my next topper are: at least 3”, memory foam, Certi-pur certified, cooling, included or available cover, slightly firm but still soft so that it forms to my body, etc. EDIT: need a twin xl size
If you have any recommendations please let me know! Or if I should just go with the Sleepyhead feel free to also comment that :)
Thank you all!
Looking for a topper for my TwinXL.
Is it better if every part of my bedding is from the same brand? (Pillow, sheets, mattress protector, topper, and comforter) is there a good brand for this setup?
Thanks!
hi!
i’m a high school student graduating in 2025 and am gradually building a list of dorm supplies that I want for my dorm. i keep seeing that a mattress topper is necessary, and was wondering if people had any advice on a mattress topper that isn’t incredibly expensive, but is also good quality. i figured this is the place to ask! let me know if you have recommendations. 😁
I'm 6'3" and weigh 205 lbs so need a bed that's at least 80" inches long - preferably a Twin XL.
I can't handle soft mattresses - needs to be extra firm, closer to a floor or concrete than anything fluffy.
Would be great to get something that's made with more natural materials rather than overloaded with chemicals. That's just a wishlist thing though, I care more about the other aspects.
I went to BB&B yesterday and some were like $300! And they range from like 1 inch to 3 inch. Which one worked for you? And will my twin fitted sheet still fit over it? Thanks!
