r/UsbCHardware on Reddit: High Power USB C Car Charger
April 16, 2024 -
Hey everyone,
I’m currently in the process of designing a Multi-Port USB C Car Charger, and I could really use your input and expertise!
Here are a few questions I have:
1. How many ports and at what wattage would you suggest for this car charger? 2. What specific applications do you envision using this charger for? 3. Are there any existing products in the market that come close to what you’re looking for?
Your insights will be invaluable in helping me create a product that meets the needs of the community. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and suggestions!
Thank you in advance!

Honestly pulling this much power from a device that is set inside the 12V car plug just screams that it will overheat or pop the fuse/overload the wiring of the 12V outlet. I would rather have a separate block with decent heat sinking that could be hard wired in to insure longevity and safe operation.

I have this one which does a good job and if needed, will let me power my laptop or recharge it quickly. And it tells me the power it is supplying and the voltage involved: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09Y39K17Z/ But 3 outlets would be better, like this one: https://www.amazon.com/Charger-Baseus-Charging-Adapter-Samsung/dp/B09HTTSJLV/ In general, 3 ports is probably the right number, with at least one USB A port to power a dash camera or something that only needs 12W or less, at least one USB C port that gives 65 or 100 watts, and one more port, probably USB C, that does 30 W. I keep a second older car charger in the car in case I have some friends who need to charge phones at the same time. But it doesn’t do the high-power output. Max power draw should be under 120 W, because that’s where some of the car fuses are designed to pop on that circuit. But honestly, my guess is that there are enough Chinese companies doing this that you’ll probably have trouble finding something you actually want to do that you couldn’t already buy a no-name version of and get your name stamped on it.

Any of the below works -- I would ... charging car adapter will work ... at least 23W (for the Pixel 7's) for rapid charging; if you want to futureproof it, I believe the Pixel 8's and newer need at least 30W. What about dual USB-C chargers?
There are endless varieties of car charger outlet combinations. For any reasonable-length guide such as this, a narrowing down is necessary. That's why we focused on chargers with one USB-C and one USB-A port, for the greatest flexibility. However, if you don't need a USB-A port, most of the companies we've mentioned above also make dual USB-C chargers that likely perform similarly. Click on one of the options above that looks good to you, and there's likely a dual USB-C option listed as a recommendation elsewhere on that page.

How fast can car chargers really charge?
This is an interesting question. Theoretically, the maximum output from a 12-volt "cigarette lighter" socket is 180 watts, since most run through a 15-amp fuse (15Ax12V=180W). In practice, it's far lower. The last thing any manufacturer wants is for you to blow fuses in your car trying to recharge three phones, a laptop and a curling iron or something. For the most part, the fastest car chargers will charge your phone in a similar, though probably somewhat slower, timeframe as a decent charger at home.

Can my phone fast-charge on any charger?
Maybe. There are several fast-charging specifications and most phones don't include them all. Most chargers don't include them all either. Before purchasing any charger, even our picks, it's worth finding out what kind of charging your phone is capable of and making sure the charger supports it. The two protocols to consider are PD and QC. PD is extremely common, QC is found in many, though not all, phones/tablets that use Qualcomm chips.
