r/whatcarshouldIbuy on Reddit: Best 3-row SUV under $15K?
December 31, 2024 -

I need something with a ton of cargo space. Most any 3-row SUV with the 3rd row folded down will give me the space I need but they’re all huge so I’d like to try to maximize fuel economy. I really like the safety features (blind spot monitoring, lane assist, adaptive cruise/braking) on the newer cars - which also tend to be more fuel efficient - but I don’t know if there’s anything like that within my budget. I’d prefer to stick with Japanese brands for their reliability and generally lower parts/maintenance costs. I might be OK with Hyundai or Kia (do either of them make a 3-row SUV?) or even a VW, Audi, or Land Rover if there are any that won’t kill me on parts/maintenance costs. (I think that lets out BMW, Mercedes, and Porsche, though.)

Edit: Forgot to mention that I’m in Panama. Prices here are quite a bit lower than for a comparable vehicle in the US. Also forgot to mention that we’re going to be traveling all over Panama, looking for a place to settle down. Lots of sketchy roads in Panama so 4WD/AWD is a must which is why I’m looking for an SUV rather than a minivan.

First of all let’s cut out all luxury car brands. Especially Land Rover. Respectfully and simply put, if If 15k is the absolute most you can spend on a large 3-row SUV, you will not be prepared for maintenance and repair bills for those vehicles. (I do my own maintenance, but a simple BMW dealer maintenance job; oil change and tire rotations comes out to around $700 for my m3) At your budget and what you are looking for… severely limits what you can get. In all honesty, the lowest mileage Honda Odyssey or Toyota Sienna (optional AWD) you can get is the obvious choice here. While I’m not completely sure about technology in them, they are safe, reliable, spacious, decent fuel economy family haulers. Great vehicles all around, as well. Easy to drive and not massive on the outside. You should not be looking at SUVs unless you need the ground clearance or towing. If you were to up your budget by 10k I’d suggest a Subaru Ascent, which basically checks all your boxes but price Edit: to add, all of the well recommended (not by me, but by the sub) 3-row SUVs, like Highlander’s, Telluride/Palisades, Pilots, are all way out of the price range. Shitty smaller examples like the three-row optioned Dodge Journeys and VW Tiguans are terrible

Have not bought a car in two decades - what used SUV will last 10-12 years spending $15-17k?
One of the best things you can do is research specific models and model years of vehicles you’re considering. That will show you what sorts of common problems each vehicle tends to have. Every vehicle has problems, but some are more catastrophic and expensive than others. I use CarComplaints.com a lot, and another fellow Redditor just suggested Dashboard Light as another good source. In that budget, it’s not bad but you might struggle to get something that’ll last 10-12 years. Not saying you won’t, but the kinds of vehicles you’ll find either will have a lot of miles on them or be models that are notoriously unreliable, generally. This is where researching specific models can uncover hidden gems and lurking lemons. You mention that you liked the Nissan Rogue. Hate to burst your bubble, but you should stay clear of any Nissan with a CVT-style transmission generally. Nissan’s transmission supplier Jatco made a really crappy CVT for years that has a tendency to fail prematurely-in some cases as low as 60k miles. Supposedly the newer ones in the current Nissan lineup are more robust but until I see some more data supporting this, I will struggle to trust a Nissan CVT. Any Jeep with the 2.4L Tigershark 4-cylinder engine is a no-go in my book. They’re slow, inefficient, and unreliable. You’ll find Renegades, Compasses, and Cherokees lurking around, looking tough, but ready to fail you with that engine (the ZF 9-speed automatic isn’t great in those models, either). The Cherokee with the 3.2L Pentastar V6 is better, but the same problematic transmission remains. The Buick Encore (and the rebadged Chevy Trax) from before 2024 are not well made and have a history of engine problems. I’d stay away from those. Regarding navigation, most cars are going to Apple CarPlay/Android Auto in this budget. Built in navigation gets dated quickly and is expensive to update. If you are concerned about data coverage, download offline maps of where you’re going from Google Maps. This will work the same as a built in navigation system most of the time. Or you can purchase a Garmin or TomTom system for those situations where you need navigation in a desolate area. Regarding what I’d choose? I’d try to find a second generation Acura RDX. Honda’s J-series V6 is a beast for reliability and it uses a traditional torque converter 6-speed automatic. The interior is nice and roomy. Good luck! More on reddit.com

February 12, 2026 - In addition, its midsize footprint makes it easier to maneuver than larger three-row SUVs while still offering flexible seating.
