At this point, $2k does not really buy much more than a beater car. There might be some unicorns out there, but if you're looking for something that would be called "reliable" you would want a budget more around $5k. On the note of reliable - you can't just say "Buy a Civic, it will be reliable." These will be used cars, with varying mileages, maintenance, wear and tear, etc. If you lined up 5 of them, they'll be in 5 different conditions. One might last 5 years, one might die in a week. Think of it this way - If I said "Are people named Tom, friendly?" Well...it depends on each individual one, right? You can't just say "All Toms are friendly" lol. Be wary of anyone who suggests a specific car, because they had good experience with one. That's simply anecdotal evidence - it doesn't pertain to the vehicle you will actually be looking at. And sorry to be the wet blanket, but if your total budget is only $2k, the repairs that come along will quickly catch up to that amount or far more. Final note: "I kind of zoned out when my dad tried explaining why a Chevy Cruise was a good car (I’m not that stupid" Zoning out when someone is trying to explain why something is beneficial to you... doesn't help you. If you only had 2,000$ to buy a car what would you get?
If it were me, I'd be looking for $3,000 cars, that I can negotiate down to $2,000. Something Japanese like a Honda or Toyota or mazda, and something with a manual transmission. High mileage with the manual doesn't scare me. 200,000 miles? No big deal. Manual transmissions also have less resale value, which will help you out. Maybe something that's been in a fender bender, that you can buy some junkyard bumpers for. Don't forget to budget in fuel and insurance. Something like that you can probably get away with just liability, but if it gets wrecked, you don't get anything from the insurance company. If you have two cars that you're looking at, call the insurance company and get a quote on both, because one might be significantly higher. Honda civics for example, have high theft rates in some areas, and will cost twice as much as a Corolla to ensure. More on reddit.com

r/whatcarshouldIbuy on Reddit: What are some cars recommended for a first time car buyer under $2000?
May 2, 2025 -

Im trying to buy a cheap car so I can have transportation to and from school and hopefully by the next two years save up for a better car. I have NO knowledge about cars but I would really appreciate a list of very reliable cars that can last me the next year or two with cheap repair maintenance. I’m definitely going to look for a Toyota Camry, Avalon, and Corolla and Honda Accord and Civic. But I would like to open up to other car brands. I kind of zoned out when my dad tried explaining why a Chevy Cruise was a good car (I’m not that stupid) so I rather get help from strangers from the internet.

UPDATE: I bought my first car!!! I ended up buying a 2010 Subaru Outback! She’s a beauty. My dad’s friend who’s a mechanic inspected the car for $20 and did an oil change. Tires are good, and breaks will last for a while. I wasn’t so sure on the car as it had 231,000 miles but I am very happy with the purchase. I did everything all of you amazing people suggested and I appreciate all of you (Total was 3k a little more than I anticipated)

TLDR: Bought a 2010 Subaru Outback for $3,000

Nowadays, for that price you should just be happy it’s drivable. I’d make sure it’s not a salvage title unless you have a mechanic who knows what to look for when it comes to structural damage from an accident. Aim for a 2nd owner at worst, if you can. Toyota, Honda, Mazda, those Buicks the other user mentioned… I’d even look at some Saturns at this price range. Just try and make sure there’s documented maintenance if it’s over 100k miles (which is very likely).
