Honestly I’d look for a second gen CR-V. I think they go for around that price depending on condition. My mom had one when I was kid and it was more than enough space for our family. Also I think they had bonus things like the lower trunk cover being a table. And it has a full size spare on the back. That being said, I’m slightly going off nostalgia here and I’m not sure of that generations reliability. But my mom’s CR-V is still running. More on reddit.com

How big of an SUV? Was just in this boat and bought a 2010 CRV, 89k miles and fully loaded for 8k (with some minor damage to the rear bumper, albeit, but it's just cosmetic). If you can find a 2010-2011 CRV with under 100k, that would be a godlod way to go. I think earlier generation Venza's with around 100k would be killer also. More on reddit.com

Hey! So I currently have an 08 Mazda cx7 but it’s constantly giving me problems. I need a car to get to work and to transport my kids to the babysitter/school. Any ideas? I was looking into a CRV but they’re asking for more than 5k 🥴

That’s a hard price range for any type of car, but I have a couple recommendations. First, don’t buy from a dealership, too many added fees. Instead, use a marketplace like CarFax or eBay Auto or FB. Second, unless you’re in a snowy area avoid 4WD models. They’re more expensive than equivalent FWD models and may introduce extra unreliability. (Exception, Subaru, but that’s AWD anyway) CRV can be a decent option if you find a cheap one that’s the right year. CRV’s are insanely year specific, so check online to see which years are good and which are shit. I would personally look for a Rav4 or 4runner instead. Again, difficult to find under 5k, but great car that will last you a long time. Subaru outback/crosstrek/forester isn’t bad. Not quite as reliable or as good if gas mileage but perfect for a snowy or muddy area. Depending on where you live though, this may be a bad idea. A fair number of mechanics won’t work on them because of the unusual engine layout (dumb imho) so check to see if there’s a place that will work on them.(repairs at a dealership again not recommended because of the high price) There’s other options but that’s an OK list. SORRY I GUESS I MEANT SMALLER CROSSOVER SUV, WE ARE A FAMILY OF 4 (2 kids).
I live in a rural area but have good roads, I work at home but need to drive about 80 miles trips to go buy groceries and we like to road tripping 3-4 times a year and I need to pick up the kids from school.
Also I know nothing about cars, been driving a 2001 protege the last 10 years.
