As the title suggests I’m looking to buy a suv for around $15,000. I’m looking to get any recommendations from people or any cars to avoid while searching.
**I am hoping for general leads on reliable vehicles that meet my needs that tend to be available in my budget.
I currently have a 2005 Mazda Tribute which I love but think I need to move on from (catalytic converter is busted, oil leaks, windshield wipers don’t work). I’m considering my options but looking for advice for a replacement should I go that route.
I camp (some car camping), paddle board, and kayak all summer so I would like something about the same size or a bit larger that what I have now. My lab has a Large Variocage, in a perfect world the car would have a 40+ in depth cardio space but I can put the back seat down and push it against my front seats or get a different crate.
I would like to find something in Oregon under $15.5k that is/has: -Clean title non negotiable -RELIABLE & safe non negotiable -Mid size SUV, I am flexible on sizing for a good fit otherwise. -Mileage ideally under 85k. Under 100k miles non negotiable. -Has the ability to install Apple carplay aftermarket or has it already -2016 or newer
I love Subaru, Mazdas, and Fords. My dream car is a Mazda CX-anything or Subaru outback, crosstrek, or forester which are all unlikely to meet my constraints. I am seeing a lot of Hyundai Santa Fes, Hyundai Tuscons, Nissan Muranos, Nissan Rogues, and Kia Sorrentos that do meet my criteria.
Thanks for any help or advice!

I’m looking to get an SUV under $15,000 USD. I know there are some cheaper SUVs that aren’t super reliable, so what are the best makes/models?
Just weighing my options.
Hi everyone,
I'm looking to buy a SUV (need to carry stuff around) and my budget is limited to 15k. I honestly don't want anything in particular other than something gas efficient and reliable. I don't really care if it drives fast or what it looks like. Looking forward to reading your recommendations !
Thanks
+1 on that. I've had mine for roughly 4 years and have put 60k miles on it. Still been a very affordable car, average 20 mpg, can haul 8 people, and tow roughly 5k. Had to do an alternator and all standard maintenance, but been pretty decent other than that.
Don't think it'll work for this person as they prioritize MPG and the Pilot does not get good mileage. It's good for it's size but not good overall.
Is your budget $15k for just the vehicle?
Because tax and reg will be another $1k plus. So your budget really may be $13,500.
I’m looking to get an SUV under $15,000 USD. I know there are some cheaper SUVs that aren’t super reliable, so what are the best makes/models?
Currently looking for a car, preferably maximum $ 15,000.
Make should be a small to midsized SUV. Under 100,000 miles.
We are using AVC and I have seen a lot of Hyundais and Hondas pop up with those parameters.
Could you tell me if there are any other cars that would fall in this price range which count as reliable cars? I have also seen some Kia's and Ford's but not sure if those are good cars anymore
I am a new driver and I can’t afford to buy a new car just yet. I’m not really good with cars so as much as possible, I want a car that has good tech for beginners and comfortable. I’ve been hearing a lot of Toyota RAV 4 or Honda CRV but I want to have other options too. I’m not sure which YEAR to start looking from. 😅😅
I’m currently in Florida, if that helps.
I am driving a 2018 Ford Escape SE AWD right now, but it's a lease and that lease ends in December.
I do like my car (especially the sport mode) and may buy the model, but I wanted to see what cars I should also consider in the price range.
My understanding is the Toyota Rav4 is super reliable, Suburus have an amazing AWD system (but I'm hesitant because of oil consumption, head gaskets, and problematic CVT), and it seems like the 2018 Ford Escape is somewhat reliable.
I don't have kids, so I really don't need a midsized or large SUV. Plus, I want something with halfway decent fuel economy. I basically need enough cargo space to fit a mountain bike with seats folded down.
Any advice, experiences, or suggestions would be great. Thanks, everyone!
I’ve never made a big purchase so i’m really trying to get all the information I can but I see a lot of conflicting information online. I want it to last a good 4 years with no serious problems. It seems like everyone online recommends the toyota Rav4 but it seems to be out of my price range unless I wanted to go for something over 100k miles. The cars i’m seeing under 70k miles are the Ford Escape, the Chevy Trax, Volkswagen Tiguan, and various Jeeps. I haven’t heard the greatest things on here about these four but maybe there are particular years/editions of these cars that I can look out for that would be preferable?
About what I need: I probably put more miles on than the average person i guess. We like to go on a few road trips a year and then i commute 25 miles to work a couple times a week. I want an SUV bc i have a daughter and a big dog and would like to have more space than the average car. Don’t really want something overly big with a third row though. Good gas mileage is a plus. My silly want is the blind spot monitor bc i have an anxiety about that.
All your help is greatly appreciated!! And if you have a good resource I should check out for car reviews, let me know!
The Tiguan would be best out of those listed under 70k according to a mechanic I ran a bunch of different models of cars by. I think the only american suv he recommends is the explorer
I feel like the Chevy trax might be the best bang for your buck. There’s also Toyota Corolla suvs out there. Ford Explorer is definitely a contender mainly because I still see them on the road. Jeeps are expensive especially wranglers so I would avoid those. I would also not go with the Tiguan due to expensive to work on even a non dealer shop. Honestly the rav4 is pretty solid. I still don’t think I could justify spending $15k for well over 100k miles. Also maybe a CPO Impreza wagon/hatch or outback. Well that’s all I got. Hope it helps.
Hi guys, Looking to buy a relatively recent used SUV on a budget of $18000 max.
Right now trying to choose between:
-
2021 Toyota Rav 4
-
2023 Hyundai Tucson SEL
-
2022 Hyundai Tucson SE
-
2021 Mazda CX-5
Which would you choose? Or is there a better option on the price range such as an older CRV or Subaru Outback/Crosstrek
I’ve narrowed my choices down to
Edit: AWD Suvs
Honda CR-V
Toyota rav-4
Mazda cx-5
From my research and this sub , the cr-vs in this price range are only good if the CVT transmission was serviced every 30k miles.
My question is , are rav 4s with 120k ish miles that “bulletproof” ?
What mileage should I be looking at when considering the cr-v and cx-5?
My 06 Santa Fe is finally on his last legs and I'm in search of a new car. I'm looking to buy outright so no financing or anything like that. I wanted recommendations on models that would be in that price range cause I've started to run into model year issues with the cars in my price range. I like the Buick encore and Chevy Trax but wanted some in depth help on what would be a good lasting car that isn't necessarily the most expensive/new. Any advice is greatly appreciated as I'm starting to feel defeated in my car search. For reference I live in NY so I need a car to handle the winter. Thank you in advance

Get the autotrader app. Search Toyota. Select SUV. Under 100k miles. Under $15k. Don’t worry about the year as much as the miles, condition, and maintenance history. Buy something that had lived it’s life outside of the NE or upper MW so it’s not rusted out. Odds are you’ll have to travel for it.
Also, there are plenty of non-SUV vehicles that will handle winter just fine.
