I work in property management and deal with appliance repairs all the time so I have some experience with all the major brands as to reliability. You really want to get the extended warranties if possible (& affordable). Costco is the best deal with the Allstate plan add-on (previously SquareTrade) since you get up to 7 years of coverage for ~$150-200 which is a steal. As for the individual brands while Samsung has nice looking machines, they tend to have a lot of issues and have service area deserts (like Seattle where I am) so it’s impossible to get someone out and most 3rd party repair shops won’t service. Whirlpool tend to be the best combo of reliability & ease of repair/obtaining parts. They also can be serviced by lots of 3rd party companies. GE isn’t as reliable but also easy to get parts. If LG has servicers in your area then they can be good for features but make sure to get extended coverage. For other appliances Amanda & KitchenAid are good as well. The problem nowadays is that the more electronics they add, the more expensive they are to repair due to the circuit boards having to be fully replaced as opposed to small parts so it’s super expensive. Maytag & Speed Queen used to be good years ago but not anymore IMO, quality control has gone down and most are consumer grade with the commercial grade ones even being less in quality now too. Also, yes I would never get front load washers due to gasket seals getting super moldy and having to be replaced after a few years + constantly having to wipe the glass door. Top load or a space maker is what I would get. I just recently went to a Best Buy Outlet store the other day and it was all Samsung & Maytag open-box returns so that may say something as well. Also, I want to make it clear, I am no appliance tech nor do I have technical knowledge of how the appliances work besides ordering individual parts if we take care of in-house for simple part swaps. What I do know is the % of service calls I have to arrange along with the corresponding repair bills for certain brands & models. It’s honestly a crapshoot which is why I recommended the extended service plans especially on anything not easily repairable by you. This is all my opinion based on my personal experiences the past 3 years in residential property management, was in commercial prior 5 years. Consumer Reports, WireCutter & Reddit are all great resources for researching potential models. I’d also recommend always sorting reviews on any online retailer from newest to older as opposed to their relevant/recommended reviews since there are a lot of paid reviews out there. As for what washer/dryer I’m likely to get, my budget is $1,000 & I plan on getting a simple GE/Whirlpool Spacemaker (it’s small but I have one in current apartment I like) or Whirlpool top load units from Costco for ease of repairs/parts and warranty coverage but I don’t want anything fancy or expensive so it’s not for everyone. Stay away from Samsung whatever you do. I’ve had multiple technicians tell me this.

I just bought a whirlpool set and I like them. No complaints.
