Meh, I hate vacuuming and mopping, and my standards aren't that high. Even a basic 2 in 1 does a job that's good enough that a deeper and more manual clean can be rare. As far as I'm concerned, it's worth it.

I don't think I've ever agreed with Wirecutter. There no pure mopping robot that cleans better than the newest hybrids. My Dreame, which is about 8 models behind the newest tech, does everything well and is pretty self-sufficient. My lazy ass wants a newer model with a larger tank, hair-cutting brush, and extended mops and brushes so the bot can be even more self-sufficient, but the desire to upgrade comes from the appreciation of the machine I have and its immense utility. Greatest purchase I've ever made and that was under 600 bucks. One of the reasons the writer might be getting poor results is unfamiliarity with each machine and not knowing how to adapt it to specific goals and the environment. The default settings are never optimal.

I'm looking for something I can use around the house for random dust and debris, crawl space cleaning, etc. And maybe even stuff in the yard occasionally. Also want to be able to drain my sump pit with it or suck up excess water around there in an emergency. Ideally want a good, dependable, durable product that will last long but not completely break the bank.

Use case advice that will many even the crappiest one work 500% longer: Get two. Dry shopvac. Most of them come with optional vacuum cleaner bags like your home vacuum. Get and use them and let everyone who touches it know to check the bag and this is ONLY a dry shopvac. Wet shopvac. This is properly set up for wet pickup at all times. Mark each in a horrendous manner so there is no confusion. One of the reasons people hate shopvacs is the mixing of dirt and water which makes it smell like a dumpster at a Thai restaurant. if you use the above, you should have two pleasant and long lasting items.

For big jobs I stick with a wet/dry vac, but for everyday dirt I grab the Shark PowerDetect Cordless Stick Vacuum. It’s quick for daily dust and pet hair, and doesn’t take up garage space.
