For a basic suit, I'd probably look first at their long-running seasonless stretch suiting or Bi-Stretch line. Watch for sales (historically they've had them early June), but note that it's hard to go wrong with Ann Taylor for your first major suit. Aritzia – Aritzia has a ton of suiting for women, and they come in petites and tall sizes as well.

My daughter is about to graduate from college and needs some professional clothes. I'd like to buy her a nice suit for Christmas, but I'm a little at a loss.
Kohls is too "old" for her, and Banana Republic seems to only have "slouchy" style suits. I just want something classic that won't cost more than $400 combined suit jacket and pants.
Any recommendations?

I got my first suits out of law school from J Crew and they’ve held up pretty nicely, but my go to’s now are Ann Taylor and LOFT, for classic suit pieces as well as blouses/separates to go with the suit. Not what you asked for, but I also like the Old Navy Taylor suit line because it’s a great price point for things like “fun” blazers and printed pants - I don’t like to spend too much on trendy pieces that I only wear every once in a while. And, you probably already know this but please don’t try to surprise her - take her out shopping so she can try everything on! My mom got me a very nice suit as a gift - had my measurements and everything - but the jacket never fit right at all and I wasn’t able to find a tailor to work on it. I eventually donated it.
