When it comes to YouTube, SEO scores are bullshit designed by VidIQ & Tubebuddy to sell their paid services. Am told 6-7 years ago before I started YouTube that keyword stuffing tags & descriptions was a smart play but a 100% SEO score now means next to nothing. The best case to prove this is MrBeast who will score a 0% SEO score on his uploads. Repeating your title in the 1st line of the description will score you a 20% SEO on apps like VidIQ & Tubebuddy but that isn't the smartest play. Then loading up on tags to the max will most likely take your SEO score to 100% but again not the smartest play & isn't the best way to use tags or how YouTube recommends how to use them.

Subscribe to Nick Nimmin or VidIQ. Nick does Saturday streams were he answers questions from new tubers - which is helpful because there’s always overlap that might apply to you in some way versus looking for specific technical answers. I use TubeBuddy. I like it because it will show a sidebar that lets you know what you can still do to raise your score - like sharing on Reddit, getting a like on Facebook, having a pinned comment, hearting a comment, etc. all of it adds up.

I’ve tried a bunch of tools for YouTube keywords all of them show fancy graphs and numbers but end up just confusing you. now I only use ubersugg⁤est, it’s simple: drop in a seed keyword and it gives enough context that ideas just start flowing. It’s kinda underrated, but when you use it right, the keyword rabbit hole gets pretty fun lol.

VidIQ has been very helpful for us so far. Feel like it made a big difference. I heard tube buddy is pretty much the same.

For site audits: Screaming Frog. Free for under 100 page website. Best tool out there IMO. For keyword research. Ahrefs and Semrush have free but limited tools, still worth using those! Also using some of the chrome extensions available and just checking the top 3 organic search results should point you in the right direction. Honestly the Google SERP is the best tool, and with AI tools now it's getting easy to analyze them, the KWs used, page structure etc. See what ranks, study their page structure and KWs etc, look at their sitemaps and site structure. That's going to be your best foundation.

I have a +85k sub channel about almost 2 years old. I can tell you the only thing that matters in the performance of you videos are : title, thumbnail and maybe just maybe tags. Try to invest more time on thumbnail though.

The only thing that matters is thumbnail, titles and description. No amount of tags or hashtags will help you with it, so don't bother.

Tags don't make a big difference anymore. Don't bother. I use tubebuddy free to see what other "competitors" are using. When you have the extension installed and watch a video it shows what tags they use. You can use that to learn, but otherwise just write some relevant tags yourself. Tags are mostly used to cover typos and maybe some keywords that are not present in the title or description. My advice, but take it with a grain of salt, is to focus more on titles and descriptions. For shorts even these are less relevant. I've seen shorts-focused channels that use titles like "HAHA" or "LOL" with lots of emojis, no description, no tags, and still have hundreds of MILLIONS of views. So I don't know what to think anymore.

Isn’t a basic “what are people searching for and where are the content gaps?” tool provided in the YT Studio App? At least on mobile its there.
