Andropogon gerardii
Big Bluestem is a warm season grass; it actively grows during the summer when soil temperatures are warm. It is a big plant, getting over six feet tall in most situations. In a landscape it can be used as an accent, but it can be aggressive so is not recommended for small spaces. It has great fall color in the range of gold and pink. Big Bluestem is the host to many insects, including Northern Pearly-eye, Common-Wood Nymph, Ottoe Skipper, Cobweb Skipper, Dusted Skipper, Delaware Skipper, Arogos Skipper, and Indian Skipper. I purchased big bluestem grass here in 2020 and still have 1/8 lb. Do the seeds still have some viability?
The long-term viability of prairie grass seed depends upon the storage conditions. The temperature and moisture/humidity of the storage conditions are very important in maintaining viability across seasons. With warm season grasses, if the seed storage has...

Does Big Bluestem spread aggressively? I wanted to use it to create a border, but i don't want it taking over.
Big Bluestem is a good plant choice for a border/screen. As with all native grasses, it does self-seed readily when well sited. If you are trying to maintain a neat border of single-spaced plants, you'll probably need to remove seedlings once a year. Also...

BIG BLUESTEM
Description · Read The Land · Planting Tips · When the early European explorers marveled at the ocean of grasses that came up to their horses' flanks, they were talking about a landscape richly endowed with colonies of this magnificent grass. Big Bluestem grows to a height of 3 to 4 feet, and its' roots may reach a depth of up to 12 feet. Grazing animals will almost always choose this grass in preference to others; and as a result of farming and careless range management practices, it has all but disappeared from most of its original habitat. · Natives Are FriendlyEarly settlers crossing the p

I am anticipating getting three big blue stem plants in my backyard pocket prairie. Just wondering yalls experience with how it self seeds. If I put three of them in a ~15x15 ft garden bed is it only going to be bbs in three years? Should I consider putting them somewhere else? Or maybe just put one in the pocket prairie? Thank you 🌾

That should be fine in a 15x15 garden. Mine are 3 years old and haven’t spread too much. When talking about bb being aggressive, it’s mostly just aggressive against shorter grasses and shorter wildflowers. It never takes over to such an extent that it’s the only thing growing. In fact, in a local prairie I’m helping manage, we struggle to get native warm season grasses like big bluestem to take hold against the sea of Canada goldenrod.

I planted 3 one gallon big bluestem, hoping they would spread out and basically merge into one 6x6 area, and they have very politely kept in their original spot. I’m going to plant more this year so I can have a bigger patch. I haven’t noticed any reseeding either, and they’ve been there for 3 years. They have spread slightly, but nothing like I was lead to believe. I always find plant aggressiveness statements to be untrue(at least in my gardens) nothing that was said to be aggressive has spread nearly as much as I hoped it would, and things that aren’t known to be so spready are everywhere(golden Alexander’s, for example)
