Hatzegopteryx - Wikipedia
4 days ago - While the skull of Hatzegopteryx was unusually large and robust, its wing bones are comparable to those of other flying pterosaurs, indicating that it was not flightless at all. Buffetaut and colleagues suggested that, in order to fly, the skull weight of Hatzegopteryx must have been reduced in some way.

How big was the Hatzegopteryx?
Estimates show that the Hatzegopteryx was probably as tall as a giraffe, with an average height of up to 18 feet. It had a wingspan of about 33 to 39 ft (10 to 12 meters). Despite being such a large animal, the hollow bones helped to keep the weight on the low side. It had an average weight of about 250 pounds.

New Study Suggests Quetzalcoatlus Could Not Soar Far
January 5, 2025 - Pteranodon was thought to be one of the biggest, but over the last fifty years or so, evidence has emerged of the Azhdarchidae – a family of Late Cretaceous flying reptiles, some members of which such as Hatzegopteryx, Quetzalcoatlus, Arambourgiania and the recently described Thanatosdrakon* were the largest flying animals known to science.

So, how was something so big managing to sustain itself on an island of small dinosaurs? At first, scientists estimated Hatzegopteryx eating habits based on what they knew about similar pterosaurs. Hatzegopteryx is a member of a group of pterosaurs known as azhdarchids. The name is fittingly derived from the Persian word “azhdar” which roughly translates to “dragon.” Common azhdarchid traits include elongated stork-like heads, long and delicate necks, relatively tiny bodies, and the power of flight.
